Why isn't this game listed as Sid Meier's Pirates!: Live The Life? Instead we use a title which is confusingly identical to the earlier game in the series.

It should be so, as it is the earlier US release's title (XBox).

Yikes. 2004 now qualifies as back in the day. I feel freakin' old. -_-

Rob said: 'It is not, that is a tag line, I've even talked to the company for official word'.

I thought the rule was to go by the cover art.

It trumps everything is what I got out of this discussion.

Rules don't apply to Corn Popper, as approver you should know.

The thing is I don't doubt that the title is actually intended to be Sid Meier's Pirates!, but that is not how the site's standards say how to name a game. The standards say to name the title as close to as it appears on the front cover art. Company intentions, what's written on the game's spine, etc... is irrelevant. If it's claimed Live the Life is a simple tagline then so is the Sid Meier's part and the actual title is simply Pirates!

Just generally speaking, not for this game specifically, the cover art rule doesn't mean to incorporate every piece of text on the cover. There are cases where there is a clear distinction between title and tag-line. Fallout comes to mind.

Fallout's an interesting case because on this cover I would consider the 'post nuke rpg' a tagline while on this cover I would consider it part of the title. Of course that's why the front cover art rule is inherently a flawed way to name games, but it is indeed the current standard rule for the site and should be followed consistently.

So let me ask for clarification, what is the difference between a tag-lined title and a full title? The standards say taglined titles are allowed and full titles should not be listed as alt titles as the full title should be the main title.

Since "Live the Life" is part of the logo on the front cover and is actually what differentiates this game from earlier releases in the series I say it should be part of the title.
