As time passes, eventually your character will grow too old to continue his adventuresome exploits and the number of salty dogs willing to sign on with you become increasingly scarce. But don’t get your buckles in a swash just yet, you can always create a new captain and begin your murderous rampages anew, especially since there’s no way you can possibly see everything this game has to offer in a single playthrough – or half a dozen. With each subsequent edition over the years having been celebrated as a quintessential example of a sandbox masterpiece, the latest iteration of Pirates! is far from buried, but this is one treasure that belongs in every PC gamer’s glittering hoard.
MacintoshMacLife (Nov 04, 2008)
Sid Meier’s Pirates be rich in gaming bounty for ye to plunder, from strategy to role-playing to combat to adventure. Don’t miss out.
WindowsJust Adventure (Aug 23, 2005)
I love the game. Perhaps the game player should have been given a game options screen where aging could have been turned off, infinite notorious pirates, relatives and treasure spawns turned on, cooperative and competitive network and internet play, and an easier dancing mode that would let us enjoy all dances and the JS Bach music in the game. I guess we just don’t live in a perfect world.
WindowsUOL Jogos (Dec 09, 2004)
And Sid delivers again with the updating of PIRATES! This is great news. And not just for us old folks. The new PIRATES from Firaxis delivers all the greatness of the prior version while adding enhancements and twists that make it all fresh again. Don't get me wrong…this isn't for the adrenalin fan. There's no crazy wild ride here. There is, however, a great game that displays a ton of research and hard work and thoughtfulness in the design.
WindowsGame Vortex (Jan 23, 2005)
Sid Meier’s name means quality, and it rarely disappoints. Sid Meier’s Pirates! Live the Life is a perfect example of this and is a great addition to anyone’s collection.
94 (Dec 04, 2004)
Ultimately, however, Sid Meier's Pirates! is an exciting gaming experience, its versatility makes it accessible to a variety of gamers, and it possesses dynamic game play that eliminates the monotony plaguing so many single-player games.
XboxIGN (Jul 08, 2005)
Sid Meier's Pirates is a must-have Xbox game. It's that simple. This "adventure" game comprises a little bit of strategy, touches of RPG, it's got fighting and collecting, and it's designed in an ingenious way so that the goals, economy, and mini-games, all tie into, bolster, and support one another.
WindowsGamigo (Dec 17, 2004)
WindowsWorth Playing (Dec 25, 2004)
Pirates! is a spectacular remake of the 1987 game bearing the same name. Combining brilliantly charming and addictive gameplay with an easy-to-learn interface, you really can't go wrong with this remarkable title. For anyone who has wanted to sack the cities of the Caribbean or go cannon-to-cannon with Henry Morgan, Blackbeard or several other popular pirates, this is your chance. If you haven't had dreams of piracy in your life, you'll still find this game extremely enjoyable and engaging.
WindowsGameSpot (Nov 29, 2004)
Nevertheless, this is still a completely engrossing strategy game that will easily consume countless hours. While the average pirate career might last only about 5 to 10 hours, there's tons of replay value here, as you can play on harder difficulty levels, try out different approaches, and check out different sailing eras. With its engrossing gameplay, impeccable pacing, and charming presentation, Sid Meier's Pirates! is quite simply one of the most enjoyable games to come out in years.
WindowsIGN (Nov 19, 2004)
Back in the 1990s Microprose got me fired from a job and almost caused me to flunk out of college. The addictive nature of Civilization, X-COM and Pirates! meant that playing games became more important than going to work or attending class. But now, since playing games is work, I can safely confess that I've been totally captivated by Firaxis's remake of the old C64 classic. The new game adds a few new gameplay elements to the mix and updates the graphics but it still tightly adheres to the strengths that made the first game an all-consuming addiction for those of us who played it.
WindowsComputer Gaming World (CGW) (Feb, 2005)
Though most of the minigames are short and fun enough that you’ll probably find yourself saying “Just one more battle” often, you might eventually wish for a slightly deeper game. There is some replayability since you can change your character’s special skills or national allegiance, but the missions and goals are too generic for this to make much of a difference. A bit more variety in the missions, more action during the treasure hunts, and the option for a bit more strategic depth (like running your own pirate town) would have been nice. Even with these minor problems, Pirates! never loses its appeal. The simplicity of the gameplay and charm of the presentation are happy reminders of a more innocent age when games were just fun for kids rather than targets of congressional hearings.
WindowsGame Watcher (Dec 20, 2004)
This is a beautiful game, deeply detailed, with an easy to learn and use interface. The music is excellent, and even allows you to import your own MP3s if you like. This is the must have game of this year, if you miss this one, you are missing a true game classic. Sid Meiers has had many great games, but pirates has to be his crowning triumph. Miss it not!
WindowsGame Captain (Dec 10, 2004)
The rest of the adventure is up to you. You'll have to decide whether you wish to avenge your family, become a treasure hunter or an explorer, or become the finest dancer in the land -- and who knows, maybe you'll do all three! Sid Meier, author of such games as Civilization, Colonization, Railroad Tycoon and Alpha Centauri, understands where the fun in gaming lies -- not in complex controls, but in allowing the gamer to go on an adventure. Sid Meier's Pirates! is an open ended game which throws dozens of potential missions and goals at you at once and tempts you with tons of unlockable features. There is no "beating" of this game, only the retiring of one pirate and the launch of another. It's addictive, it's fun, and it's highly recommended.
WindowsGamePro (US) (Dec 03, 2004)
In the age where mediocre games with movie-sized blistering budgets and high profile voice acting have become standard, Sid Meier's Pirates goes in the other direction, focusing on the basics of what makes games great.
WindowsGameSpy (Dec 01, 2004)
Sid Meier's complete remake of the GameSpy Hall-of-Famer Pirates! quietly slipped onto store shelves this season, but it's not to be missed. It's got a simplicity and elegance that you just don't see in PC games anymore: It's pure gameplay, fun from the opening credits onward. As a player you'll be constantly engaged, firing broadsides, clashing swords, sacking villages and -- oh yes -- taking time for the laaaadies. Pirates! is piracy without the work, and while it may grow repetitive after extended play, it's in a class of its own.
WindowsBoomtown (Jan 11, 2005)
I’m not normally the guy that beams with joy whenever an old classic is revitalized and updated. The main reason for this is the many disappointments I’ve had with such updated classics.
WindowsGameZone (Jan 06, 2005)
Sid Meier’s Pirates! has some minor stumbling points, but overall is a rich and enjoyable gaming experience. The game bridges many genres and though it gives them the “lite” touch, it all combines into a wonderful romp on the high seas. If you are looking for adventure, this is a game that deserves your attention.

Kurzum: Nostalgisch, kultig, klasse!
WindowsPC Zone (Nov 23, 2004)
Like its predecessor, Sid Meier's game effortlessly takes the best of every style of gaming and mixes it into a consistent and enduringly charming whole. Certainly there are games with more strategy, and others with more action, but few, if any, can claim to be as breathlessly easy to enjoy. Little wonder that underneath the plush graphics so little has changed in Pirates! - it simply didn't need to.
WindowsGamesFire (Dec 23, 2004)
Simulations-Spielen muss man Sid Meier's Pirates! einfach wärmstens empfehlen. Die Suchtgefahr besteht auf jeden Fall immernoch.
88 PC Gaming (Dec 17, 2004)
Perhaps one of the most difficult things a game company can do is produce a modern day version of a classic game. The original game is so beloved in the hearts of gamers that a remake can often suffer by comparison; however, this incarnation of Sid Meier’s Pirates is likely to please the fans of the original version of this game. Its huge open-endedness does an excellent job of establishing the proper atmosphere while the balance of combat and economy produces a quality strategy title.
MacintoshGames4Mac (2008)
Bravo Feral!
WindowsGameSpot (Belgium/Netherlands) (Dec 03, 2004)
XboxGameSpot (Jul 11, 2005)

WindowsFiringSquad (Dec 07, 2004)
Deceptively simple, Sid Meier's Pirates! Live the Life is one of the most charming gaming experiences either. Though this has much to do with the art style and Sims-talk of characters, the entire game is in fact light-hearted and very enjoyable. Sailing the Caribbean, from Florida town to Panama and Vera Cruz to Trinidad is pleasant in and of itself. If you wish to merely trade, you can trade. If you want to be a pirate or a hero of your nation, you can do that too. Save your family? Only if you feel like it.
WindowsPC Gamer UK (Jan, 2005)
Everybody loves pirates. They wore big interesting hats, cautiously invented the retirement fund ('buried treasure') yet operated heavy machinery ('boats') while ripped to the tits on cheap rum and cocoa leaves. Few can help but love that kind of thing, the Royal Navy being a notable exception. But who the hell are they to complain? I feel comfortable laughing at their ridiculous trousers and silly canvas paraphernalia because I, quite frankly, live a long way inland. See this low hill? How tough is your Destroyer now?
85 (Jul 22, 2005)
Xboxgames xtreme (Aug 16, 2005)
Sid Meier’s Pirates is a rip-roarer of a game that deserves to be in the collection of any Xbox owner. It combines addictive gameplay with a good solid engine, delivers a fun and long-lasting experience as you try out various different directions for your main character and most of all has a feel of open-ended exploration that is often missing from a lot of new games.
WindowsGame Informer Magazine (Jan, 2005)
I have a disease called piratism. For those who aren’t afflicted, piratism is the condition of being enormously entertained by the concept of pirates. Yes, sufferers of this disease know there’s nothing funny about a bunch of dirty thieves who travel the world pillaging all they see. But we can’t help ourselves – it must be something about the goofy hats. Fortunately, inspired souls like legendary designer Sid Meier understand our condition and have provided us with the perfect outlet for our bizarre obsession: Pirates!

XboxJolt (UK) (Jul 26, 2005)
But in spite of some niggling problems, Pirates! is a very addictive game that you can while away whole evenings on, just trying out different things. Whether it lasts more than a few days is another matter, but these days that still represents a decent amount of playing time. The Xbox version even has 4-way ship battles which is a fun diversion if you have friends round, but little more than that.
85 (Dec 15, 2004)
Windows1UP (Dec 08, 2004)
I missed the original Pirates! back in the old days of the PC, but playing this revival gives me an inkling of why it's such a venerated name. It's varied, addictive, and replayable, with a big difference between the experiences available at lower and higher levels of difficulty. A 3D makeover gives it plenty of piratey character, but it's not overburdened with too many modern frills -- no lengthy cinematics or voice acting or flashy interface bits to get in the way of the eternal quest for loot. Again, a smart lesson in the value of restraint.
WindowsActionTrip (Nov 29, 2004)
Even so, 'Sid Meier's Pirates!' remains a must-buy for both the younger fans who know only of Pirates of the Caribbean and us old, scurvy sea dogs, who just feel like losing ourselves once again in the magical world of 'Pirates!'. At first I thought this was just another shameless attempt to milk more money out of an old franchise (a-la what they did with the new Larry game), but thankfully, Sid Meier's Pirates! rises above this ignoble practice to offer a very polished and fun, albeit still inherently retro remake of an old classic.

XboxNetjak (Sep 05, 2005)
Like all open-ended games, the true strength of Pirates! is its near-infinite replayability. You can play the game in a number of ways, and there's so much to do that it's very hard to get bored with the game, although it doesn’t quite give you the completely blank canvas that a GTA game might give you. Still, there's no reason to say that Sid Meier and friends haven't delivered another hit and made their console breakthrough.
WindowsPC Action (Jan 21, 2005)
WindowsGame Revolution (Dec 05, 2004)
What we are left with is a remake of one of the greatest games of all time, which in and of itself is an accomplishment worthy of praise. It's just as addictive as ever; I've been banned from speaking like a pirate at work and even tried to write this review with my pirate keyboard, but gave up after the first few paragraphs. Years from now, I'll still be popping Sid Meier's Pirates! back into my computer to pillage on the high seas, but that has as much to do with the original as it does with this remake. Now if only Sid Meier would sit down and rethink the whole game, creating a true sequel instead of just an update, we really have something to yar! about.
WindowsGameStar (Germany) (Dec, 2004)
XboxTeamXbox (Jul 12, 2005)
If someone dubbed you “The Father of Computer Gaming”, there’s a strong chance that your past work had a direct impact on the current crop of consoles. Sid Meier is the padre which has had a huge amount of influence on current gaming trends; namely those revolving around the “sim” and strategy train of thought. Sid brought us games like Civilization, and Railroad Tycoon which revolutionized PC gaming in the early 90’s. Slightly before these killer strategy sims, Sid and cronies at MicroProse put out Pirates!, an open-ended look at plundering buccaneer style. The Pirates! of old was so popular that it was recently redone for the 3D era, and met with the same critical acclaim as the original. Now, 2K Games and the new Briggs/Meier vehicle Firaxis Games are bringing the hit Pirates! redux over to the Xbox. Will it too be worth its weight in pieces of eight?
XboxMAN!AC (Jul 01, 2005)
XboxGameSpy (Jul 13, 2005)
Considering the sizeable of different genres packed into one tiny disk, Firaxis has done a great job of gelling everything together. It's a game that you can pick up and play for 20 minutes, or keep hammering on for several hours at a time. Everything is simple to pick up and once mastered, very little can stand in your way. Though things do indeed become repetitive after a while, you can take some time off and come back to it and show those rascally pirates what's what!
XboxConsole Obsession (May 31, 2010)
Sid Meier’s Pirates! is a very simplistic game devoid of any real storyline or gameplay complexities, but it’s certainly one of the most absorbing and charming titles of the year so far and despite it being based on an ancient C64 game, it still remains as unique today as it was back then. Now, please excuse us as we’re heading back out on the high seas to live the life, we suggest you landlubbers do the same!
WiiHooked Gamers (Oct 16, 2010)
Despite the fact that a couple of the mini-games can become a little repetitive, the game is really fun to play. Choosing you own destiny, rather than having a strictly linear path is really rewarding. Even though your initial choices of nationality and specific skill could be the same for every game, the game will play out completely different meaning the replay factor is huge. The controls are simple and intuitive, although I would have really liked Wii Sports Resort style sword fighting, the visuals are vibrant and colourful and the sound effects keep the Caribbean theme going strong. The new mini-games are also a nice inclusion to this version of Sid Meier’s Pirates!. So with that, I’m going to head back to the tavern, recruit some more crew and resume my search for the evil Marquis.
XboxX-Power (Aug 20, 2005)
MacintoshAppletell (Oct 22, 2008)
Sid Meier’s Pirates does feel dated at this point, which is not surprising considering the core gameplay hasn’t changed much since the 1980s. Hard core sim players will be put off by its simplicity, while hard core action gamers will grow bored with all the sailing and dancing. But for all of us in the middle, Pirates is a fantastic blend of genres, requiring just enough strategy and skill to keep it challenging while providing just enough adventure to keep the game moving. Yes, it’s old, but there’s a reason a game like Pirates continues to be updated 20 years after its initial release; because it deserves to be.
XboxGame Informer Magazine (Aug, 2005)
From the intensely thrilling ship-versus-ship battles to the political corruption that you nefariously spread, the gameplay is nicely varied and ripe with possibilities. With that said, the high seas can be a little bumpy at times. Some of the minigames are nearly unendurable, and repetition does eventually become a factor.
WindowsPC Games (Germany) (Jan 26, 2005)
XboxExtreme Gamer (Aug 15, 2005)
If you've been around gaming the last 20 years you know the Sid Meier's classic game Pirates! It's been around since the good ol' days and Pirates has been remade for almost every console that's been released.
XboxGame Informer Magazine (Aug, 2005)
As much as I enjoy the concept of pirates, in reality being one would kind of suck. Getting scurvy and spending months at sea with a bunch of grungy guys with dirty eyepatch funk doesn’t really sound like much fun. Fortunately, Sid Meier’s Pirates punches reality right in its stupid face and focuses on a more cheesy, cartoon version of pirates. Sailing around its world is a lot more fun than real buccaneers probably ever had.
WindowsPC Powerplay (Dec, 2004)
XboxDiehard GameFan (Jul 20, 2005)
While the game might not be virtual crack, it’s pretty damn close. The first day I sat down to start playing Pirates! for my review, I started at roughly 5:00. Ten hours later I had completed my first run through and only took a break because it was now 3:00 in the morning and I need to get some sleep. Fortunately this was on a Friday. The biggest thing that will keep you addicted to this game is “just one more” syndrome. Be it one more ship to sink, one more pirate to find, one more town to conquer, or one more quest to complete. Despite the little annoyances that slow down the pace of the game, things move pretty fast, so “just one more” turns into five or ten or twenty more things to do. Unfortunately the addictiveness runs out quick due to the moderate lack of replayability. But for the time you are playing, it’ll keep you hooked.
MacintoshInside Mac Games (IMG) (Mar 10, 2009)
Firaxis/Feral have done a very good job with taking modest-budget graphics and investing them with class and humor, adding that to a collection of rather simple but still engaging mini-games, and placing the whole thing in a large and vital world that you will want to keep exploring for many many hours. This game is very much more than the sum of its parts, and I enthusiastically recommend it to anyone looking for a great value in an immersive game, and who isn't too hung up on bleeding-edge graphics.
WiiGamingXP (Oct 23, 2010)
70 (UK) (Aug 02, 2005)
The Xbox version of Pirates! doesn't suffer much technically compared to last year's PC version, although you may find that the occasional loading pauses (stutters, more like) take a little getting used to, and is ostensibly the same game otherwise apart from the Versus Mode and some downloadable flag designs. Hardly surprising, of course, because refitting something this complex and finely balanced would require the sort of outlay we'd only expect from a true sequel. While it does have hidden depths, then, they're not much more than handfuls of sand scooped out of the bottom of a rock-pool. Fun though it undoubtedly is, it isn't very vicious or memorable. A bit like that Disneyworld ride, actually. Now, what was that called?
70 (UK) (Dec 06, 2004)
Don't reject it out of hand, however. It's a charming game, full of detail, with an old-fashioned deep design. It's still as unique as the day it was conceived in terms of marrying an action front end with a bubbling simulation world to explore. Its execution of an open-ended exploratory world as fine as anything you'll see in gaming - probably including most MMOs. There's certainly people reading this who'll find themselves press-ganged into service, only to fall in love with the life and end up as the next Virtual-Blackbeard sailing the PCeas. A rum old game. And even when it walks the plank, it walks it with style.

WiiBrash Games (Nov 25, 2010)
Sid Meier originally released this title back in 1987 and has reincarnated it many times since. In this game the possibilities are endless and pretty much everything is customisable – from the era in which you play, to the figurehead on your boat.

It’s always nice to see developers support Wii with quality titles, and certainly this fits the description of a quality title — Sid Meier’s Pirates is arguably one of the best games of the last decade. At the same time, the Wii version is — despite the IR and motion controls — probably the weakest of the game’s many incarnations, despite being the most expensive. Graded against the curve of its forebears, it doesn’t hold up as well as it really should. For those with few other options, though, the game still holds its magic and is one of Wii’s better titles.
XboxThe Video Game Critic (Jul 20, 2006)
Realistic sound effects include creaking ships, cannon fire, and yelling men. An appropriate musical score can be heard in each town, depending on its nationality. Although most townships look unique from the outside, I was disappointed how all of the taverns (and their patrons) look exactly the same on the inside! Also, I found the treasure hunting aspect of the game to be very confusing. When you start a new game, be sure to select a challenging skill level, or else the game tends to be too easy (and boring). The multi-player mode lets up to four players blast each other out of the water, but the island formations that serve as battlegrounds are dull. Still, if you have any interest in adventure on the high seas, Pirates may be just what you've been looking for.
WiiWorth Playing (Oct 06, 2010)
The one saving grace is that in spite of all these shortcomings, if you've never played Sid Meier's Pirates! before and only own a Wii console, then this is a title you absolutely must own. The title has long stood as an example of excellent game design, and it's so much fun that it's easy to lose track of time and spend hours and hours roaming the seas, looking for ships to pick on and new lands to explore. With that in mind, if you own any other supported platform (and you likely do), then buy another edition of the game, as the Wii version is likely the weakest of the bunch.

WiiGameSpot (Oct 12, 2010)
There's a perfunctory option for a second player to assist by performing minor tasks like attacking the enemy captain as a parrot during swordfights and adjusting the sails during sea battles, but it's hard to imagine anyone getting excited about playing such an inconsequential role. It's not that the qualities that made Pirates a classic are invisible in this Wii version. It's just that enjoying those aspects is all but impossible as a result of the frustrations that crop up. With the vastly superior PC, Xbox, and PSP versions widely and cheaply available, many potential players have easy access to a much better Pirates experience. This Wii version is better left buried and undiscovered by even the greediest of treasure hunters.
WiiNintendoWorldReport (Oct 24, 2010)
Pirates! is a light-hearted diversion. It's a game that you can invest time in casually without any real concern for forgetting what you were doing or losing your place. However, the Wii port added control issues to a game that has a need for tight controls, therefore, it's hard to recommend Pirates! for Wii. It is a shame, much of the simple fun and diversity in gameplay is still here, but as offered this game is flawed.
WiiLevel 7 (Nov 09, 2010)

Finally, we've got an Xbox game worth owning that isn't called Fable or Jade Empire. Granted, we could've used it a little sooner than a few months before the release of Xbox 360; but I'll take what I can get. You should too—this game is gold.

WiiGame Chronicles (Oct 14, 2010)
Despite all of these issues, the amazing, engaging core of Sid Meier’s Pirates! shines through from time to time, reminding the player why the game has lasted long enough to get ported onto various systems over the years. Still, unless you’re intensely averse to PC gaming, or you only have a Wii, despite the new additions, you’d be better off getting Pirates! on another platform. Despite the game’s inherent charm, the Wii port does a lot to drag this game down to Davy Jones’ locker.

WiiCubed3 (Feb 15, 2011)
There is potentially a wealth of time to be spent in Sid Meier’s Pirates! There are heaps of quests and challenges to uncover and unlock. However, the strategy of the original PC game is replaced with mindless mini-games and even the product itself does not seem to be bothered if players attempt to explore any of the hidden depths. The feeling of being left adrift in Pirates! is one that just should not be tolerated.
Pirates is an updated version of a game first designed in 1987, subsequently re-released in 1993. Though the graphics and sound have been brought up to current standards, the gameplay itself shows its age and feels a bit dates.
WiiGameZone (2010)
Sid Meier’s Pirates! is another perfect example of a great game gone bad when it's poorly ported to consoles. Skip Sid Meier’s Pirates; unless you are a glutton for punishment.

Pirate…
