PSPSoftpedia (Nov 12, 2007)
Silent Hill Origins is perfect, both for the series aficionado and the first time gamer, venturing in the sick and sad world of Alessa. I consider this game to be perfect, except for a couple of frustrating camera view issues and the bad bad bad choice of main character. Travis is probably the most boring and uninteresting protagonist of the entire series and he really tends to get annoying at some point, because he just doesn't express fear, joy, lust, sadness or other human emotions... He's just a puppet, controlled by your fingers and he blindly follows the storyline always trying to revive the past with the aid of flashbacks. His younger version is surely a sicker one, but also a more interesting character. How about a SH game featuring a little boy or girl, Konami? Till that time comes, I'll have to congratulate the producers for their masterpiece and continue waiting for Silent Hill V.
PSPRetroage (Aug 31, 2013)
Wręcz przeciwnie, tworzy ona klasę samą w sobie i śmiało można ją zaliczyć do jednych z najlepszych gier wypuszczonych na handhelda Sony.

PlayStation 2Gamers' Temple, The (Mar 18, 2008)
All arguments aside, the game is still a really great survival horror experience. If you haven't played the PSP version then you should pick up Silent Hill Origins for PS2 if that is your only option. Even if some of the aspects have gone downhill when compared to the PSP version, the game still remains the same from a gameplay perspective and overall story point of view. If you have to choose between both versions then I would easily recommend the PSP version however.
PSPPlay Magazine (2007)
Silent Hill Origins is not a good Silent Hill game... it is a great Silent Hill game. This is not a generic survival horror title retro-fitted into the world of Silent Hill, nor a side-story relegated to the PSP; this is a true new chapter worthy of its name and without question console-sized in scope and ambition. I simply cannot stress that point enough: the game you will find when you play Origins is what you would expect to find in a new console chapter on the series, not a game that was created from the start to be on a portable device. I say that with no disrespect to the PSP; it is just that, even with how grand in scope and epic in nature games have become on the device, the fact that something like Origins can exist in the way that it does will force you to reconsider your entire attitude towards portable gaming and the possibility it holds.
PSPVideo Game Generation (Jan 19, 2008)
If you heed the game’s opening, and play it with the lights off and the headphones on as I did, you’ll find that Silent Hill: Origins is every bit as creepy and atmospheric as any of the previous console installments have been. While I found it a little lacking as far as being a true prequel is concerned, Travis’ story is compelling regardless and makes for a satisfying survival horror game.
PlayStation 2The Video Game Critic (Nov 01, 2008)
I didn't find Silent Hill Origins quite as scary as some of the previous games, but that may be because the formula has become so familiar. Even so, this dark adventure is definitely a thrill and the price is right.
PSPGaming Age (Apr 04, 2008)
Silent Hill Origins may do a few things that fans may love or hate, but what it does well is allow you to play the events that lead up to the first game and solve some of the mysteries and questions. Thankfully Konami had the foresight to port this title over and allow for the game’s availability to be held on the PS2 where a majority of the titles have had their mainstay. I’d like to see this trend continue with God of War for PSP as well if you are listening Sony.
PSPWorth Playing (Dec 16, 2007)
The way Silent Hill Origins is presented is revolutionary for a handheld, but unfortunately, fans of the series may find that it doesn't bring much innovation to the table. If you have never played a Silent Hill title before, then this is an excellent introduction since the story is only tentatively linked to the rest of the series. If you're in the mood for another slice of Silent Hill or simply want something to scare you senseless while playing games on the bus, then you could do a lot worse than Origins. There are minor flaws, but many of the problems are easily overlooked and can be fixed in upcoming iterations.
PSPGameSpy (Nov 19, 2007)
Now, we've got to admit it: We had our fair share of concerns when we heard that development of Silent Hill Origins was not going to be handled in-house by Konami. Thankfully, after a few hours with the new game, our concerns were put to rest and we saw Origins as a solid addition to an already impressive franchise.
80 (Dec 11, 2007)
Of course, no one claimed that Silent Hill: Origins was about innovation, the developers set out to bring a Silent Hill title to the PSP and they have succeeded. As previously discussed, the atmosphere does not transfer well to "on the road" gaming, but story-wise it is a true classic of the series. Maybe a later PS2 release might be in order, like the PSP versions of Grand Theft Auto; I think it would sit quite comfortably in the catalogue with the other PS2 titles. In the meantime, anyone who is interested in the mythos of Silent Hill will do very well to buy this game, settle back, turn the lights off, and enjoy some good old-fashioned psychological horror.
PlayStation (Sep 24, 2008)
Silent Hill Origins is a definite must play for fans of the series. The story answers some of the lingering questions from the series and gives you even better insight into Silent Hill itself. Even with the gameplay issues, a very fun game is to be had here. If you don’t count yourself a fan of the series, or if you are a new player looking to get into the series, I would pass on this one. While the story stands on its own, the surrounding characters aren’t explained well because it’s assumed you have played the previous games. Definitely play the previous games before you venture into Origins.
PSPBlend Games (Jan 09, 2008)
Silent Hill Origins is the game that I felt it necessary to get another PSP for. After all the nasty things I’ve said about the PSP, I got to play a game that was truly high quality. Looking like it could have been a PS2 release, played out as a convincing horror survival game and giving us another frightening case study into the latently psychotic mind, Silent Hill Origins was definitely worth it. This game delivers better than half of the previous Silent Hill games with fewer god damn doors than Silent Hill 3. For what it is, Origins deserves to be the next PSP game to purchase if you haven’t already.
PlayStation (May 16, 2008)
PlayStation 2Cheat Code Central (Mar 12, 2008)
Origins is a solid entry in a popular horror franchise, but some mechanics (such as the combat and camera) show that the series is in need of a reboot. However, it's hard to beat the psychological sense of the fear that Silent Hill creates, and it's easy to see why the games have a loyal following of fans.
80 (Nov 13, 2007)
PlayStation 2GameZone (Apr 18, 2008)
Silent Hill Origins might be the weakest installment in the series, but it’s a testament to the quality of the franchise when the weakest entry is still this good. Origins is definitely worthy of a play-through by series fans and anyone who enjoys being scared.
PSPGame Informer Magazine (Dec, 2007)
Much like how innocent passersby wander into the foggy abyss that is Silent Hill never to return, fans of the series tend to stay devoted to these games because of their consistently disturbing thrills. But the warning lights are up now, Silent Hill has been spinning its wheels for too long, and it’s becoming harder for fans to stay lost in the fog.
PSPPower Unlimited (Jan 23, 2008)
PlayStation 2Game Vortex (Apr, 2008)
Overall, I'd have to say that I was disappointed in Silent Hill Origins. It was way too dark and although you can choose your level of brightness when you begin a game, unless you know how very dark and miserable it's going to be going in, you don't know to max out your brightness and you can't adjust this option later on it the game. If you could, it would have helped somewhat. In short, the story just isn't as compelling as part iterations and I just didn't find it too much fun. For hardcore Silent Hill fans who absolutely need to know how it all began, rent it.
PlayStation (May 09, 2008)

PlayStation 2Video Game Generation (May 14, 2008)
Silent Hill: Origins brought back the profound sensation of fear which made the Silent Hill series one of the top survival horror series in videogaming history. If you’re adult enough to appreciate shivers up your spine and psychological discomfort (as opposed to a childish fondness for splatter and “torture porn”), you can rest (un)easy knowing things are back to where they should be. If you want to indulge some foul urge towards the disgusting and/or the perpetration of extreme violence towards others, go rent a Saw movie, Se7en, House of Wax, Hostel, Cabin Fever, or any other Eli Roth production. Hell, you can even rent a season of Alias or the last James Bond movie – apparently, a certain administration’s disdain for the strictures of the Geneva Convention have spilled down into accepted popular culture. Just never accuse me of suggesting you patronize or perpetuate this repulsive trend in American society.
PlayStation 2UGO (UnderGroundOnline) (Apr, 2008)
This is but a minor quibble, especially for a longtime fan of the series like myself, who will consider any new Silent Hill title to be a good thing, warts and all. Is it worth buying? If you're a fan, absolutely. And if you're new to the world of survival horror, Silent Hill Origins might be just the perfect introductory title for you - it's relatively short (I finished the game in about seven hours), it'll go a little easier on you than some other titles and will still surprise you with some unexpected scares
PSPComputer Bild Spiele (Dec 05, 2007)
PlayStation 2Worth Playing (May 13, 2008)
Fans of survival horror and the Silent Hill series will enjoy Silent Hill: Origins, while others will be turned off by its morbid nature. If you don't have a PSP and didn't get the chance to check out the title a year ago, now's your chance. While the game doesn't do anything amazing to innovate the genre or the series, it's still a decent value for the $30 price tag.
PlayStation 2GamingTrend (Jun, 2008)
Adventure fans and fans of past Silent Hill games will find a lot to enjoy with Silent Hill Origins for the PS2. The game's graphics have been improved over the PSP version and the rest of the game is classic Silent Hill. However, those gamers who can’t understand why you need to flush a toilet and traverse inter-dimensional gateways to simply open a door will want to steer clear of this one. If I were Travis I would have gotten back in my truck the minute the clichéd scary girl ran into the fog.
PlayStation 2Game Captain (May 21, 2008)
PlayStation 2Gameswelt (May 13, 2008)
PSPGameLemon (Mar 24, 2008)
When it comes to survival horror games you can still do much, much worse than Silent Hill 0rigins, but by no stretch of the imagination is this a worthy entry to the series. If you're the sort of person (also known as a Resident Evil fan) who doesn't give a crap about plotting or character depth and just wants an engaging survival horror experience, you'll have fun with this game because, again, you can do a lot worse. Fans of the franchise, however, should approach it carefully, and take into consideration the fact that most of the original developing team is gone and we'll just have to adapt to the inevitable changes. I'm willing to, I love this franchise that much, and refuse to proclaim it dead just yet. Just please, keep the series away from handhelds, it will never flourish there.
PlayStation 2Computer Bild Spiele (Jun 04, 2008)
70 (UK) (Nov 23, 2007)
While Silent Hill Origins cannot offer its legions of fans anything they haven't seen done before (and done better), it still represents a solid stop-gap release, and is worth checking out if you're a series die-hard with a desire to fill in some gaps in the story. And even if you're not an aficionado, scary, intriguing survival horror titles such as these don't come along very often - least of all on the PSP. Although it's easy to dismiss Origins as a rather needless stop-gap release, viewed in the context of the platform, it's a quality offering that fans of survival horror should check out.
PlayStation (Apr 11, 2008)
Silent Hill Origins doesn’t do anything new. It’s the same formula gamers have been either loving or hating for years, so any recommendation depends on which side of the fence you happen to sit on. This is undoubtedly Silent Hill, as both the enduring strengths and glaring weaknesses are on display. There’s a lot to like, but there’s a lot that’s pretty long in the tooth, as well. Hopefully, the upcoming Silent Hill V can take a cue from this prequel to figure out what still works, and what needs an overhaul.
70 (Nov 29, 2007)
PSPGame Informer Magazine (Dec, 2007)
The Silent Hill series has been relying on the same type of scares for years now, and Origins is no exception. The game features the basic Silent Hill concoction of lackluster combat, environmental puzzles, a spooky soundtrack, creepy disfigured baddies and about 100 fog machines set to high.
PlayStation 2GBase - The Gamer's Base (Jul 21, 2008)
PlayStation 2Entertainment Depot, The (May 21, 2008)
When all is said and done, the Silent Hill: Origins is pretty good. For what I imagine was an attempt to combine the main story arc with themes from all other games while including visual elements from the film, the game should in all rights have ended in disaster. Curiously enough, it doesn't. A well thought out story and subtext shines brightly through the aping of many of the other Silent Hill games’ clichés.
PlayStation 2FileFactory Games / Gameworld Network (Apr 16, 2008)
Silent Hill and survival horror fans will like it for the most part. But if you played the original on PSP, there's not really any pressing reason to go through it again.
PlayStation 2IGN (Mar 17, 2008)
Telling the origin story of a well established franchise can be an extremely hazardous thing to do, but Silent Hill: 0rigins manages to wrap both the mythology of the movie and games together quite well. With a good storyline, intriguing gameplay elements and excellent production and replay value, 0rigins is definitely worthy of a Silent Hill fan's attention. While the combat and camera system is pretty weak, and the manual control over shifting between dimensions removes the feeling of dread, 0rigins does justice to the series as a whole. However, the port over to the PS2 just feels really basic and uninspired, with weaker textures and controls that could've been improved, but simply weren't. If you're looking to truly do justice to the horror of the game, you probably want to track down the PSP version if you have the chance.
PSPGamekult (Nov 17, 2007)

PSPGameCell UK (2007)
Silent Hill: Origins isn’t a bad game by any means – a couple of years ago this would be hailed as one of the best, but in order for the series to progress it needs to move on somewhere new. One for the fans, just don’t expect any revelations.
PlayStation (Jun 13, 2008)
PlayStation (UK) (May 14, 2008)
We can only hope that Silent Hill Origins marks a temporary period of neglect. In its own right, it's by no means a bad game; it chugs along at a decent pace, and ticks all of the right boxes in terms of atmosphere, puzzles and narrative - and we certainly approve of the greater emphasis on puzzles after the combat-centric gameplay of The Room - but it's hardly going to convert anyone either. Its willfully old-school design and clunky combat belong in a bygone era, and for the optimistic price-tag Konami has slapped on the game we've every right to expect more. Only the most hardcore of fans will have time for this; the rest of us should wait for Homecoming.
PSPGamestyle (Feb 25, 2008)
Pocket-sized foibles aside, what keeps Origins out of the big-leagues that its brethren inhabit is what saved the title from disaster in the first place- it's simply too conservative by far, with none of the occasionally misplaced inventiveness found in the other titles. Once the initial novelty wears off and the lifeless enemy-dodging wears thin, very little of Origins will be particularly revelatory for either series fans or newbies, but as proof that fear can haunt gamers far away from home, it deserves respect.
PlayStation (Jul 08, 2008)
PlayStation 2Gamekult (May 23, 2008)
PlayStation 2GameSpot (Apr 08, 2008)
If any franchise has room to grow, this is the one, yet not a single meaningful element of Origins takes the gameplay anywhere the original Silent Hill didn't already go. This comfort blanket of unevolved familiarity might be welcomed by accepting fans, but it might make you wish that the series would grow up a bit.
PlayStation 2Thunderbolt Games (Apr 17, 2008)
One can suffer through the bad graphics, useless melee weapons, and drawn out portal-traveling sections to taste some of the richest moments in confronting pain, evil and suffering that you’ll encounter in a game. There’s no doubt that the PSP version is better; the game was made for that system. So if you’ve got the PSP version, leave this puppy alone; it’s redundant and inferior. However, while it’s unattractive and a bit awkward on the PS2, if you don’t own a PSP and you’re a survival horror fan, Silent Hill Origins still comes recommended.
PSPDiehard GameFan (Nov 12, 2007)
Konami puts out yet another mediocre survival horror game. It’s about time the Silent Hill series was put to rest. Silent Hill V and Silent Hill: House of the Dead Wannabe for the arcade look like its going to be the same old slop. Its disappointing that we have more of this to look forward to, yet Eternal Darkness has yet to be given a sequel. For me SHO is up there with Dino Crisis 3 under games that should have been left as fan fiction rather than turned into a full blown product. If you want to spend your money on five hours of middle of the road gaming, feel free. I’m going to wait for something better to come along.
