PlayStationGame Revolution (Sep, 1999)
If you are a snowmobile racing fan looking for a snowmobile racing game, then Sled Storm is a must buy. Look no further, this game is for you. However, since snowmobile racing isn't really the hottest growing sport in America, I can only tell the rest of you to rent this game and maybe you'll like it enough to buy it. All in all, this is a great, solid game. Thumbs up.
PlayStationAbsolute Playstation (Sep, 1999)
I was mighty impressed with Sled Storm. It looks stunning, it plays superb, it sounds good and the 4 Player multi-tap split-screen racing works a treat. Furthermore, the inclusion of dozens of secret short cuts adds tremedously to the gameplay in a similar way that made Twisted Metal 2 so popular. Sledging along in the lead when another rider lands in front from the mountain above somehow doesn't make you feel cheated... it only makes you want to go back and find out how the hell he got up there in first place!
PlayStationGamezilla (Sep 26, 1999)
In a nutshell, Sled Storm is a fun game that’s hard to put down. This game should primarily appeal to race game fans or snowmobile riders, but don’t let that stop you even if you aren’t, as I suckered a few people that don’t normally like these types of games into playing it and they had a blast. With its nice graphics, great sounds, different racing theme, variety of tricks and tracks, and responsive controls, I give this game a score of 88.
PlayStation 2Netjak (Aug 07, 2002)
If you were a fan of the first Sled Storm, you should have no problem enjoying this one. Similarly, if you played and loved SSX Tricky, then you will probably like the extreme part of this game because they play very, very akin. Although the control is slightly irritating and the lack of modes disappointing, this game is just pure fun on snow.
PlayStationMega Fun (Sep, 1999)
Last but not least verleiht die flotte und detailreiche Grafik-Engine dem Spiel echtes Renn-Feeling.
PlayStation 2IGN (Mar 12, 2002)
What is to be said against Sled Storm? In the end, it's still an evolution of the PlayStation game, rather than the revolution that was SSX. The EA Big treatment has certainly done wonders for what was already a good racing game, leading to improvements in the track design and lending the franchise a substantial helping of personality, but it remains something familiar done better, rather than something completely new.
PlayStationVideo Games (Sep, 1999)
PlayStationSuper Play (Sweden) (Oct, 1999)
PlayStationGameSpot (Aug 11, 1999)
If this review sounds more like an infomercial to you skeptical gamers, it's because this writer tried long and hard to find flaws - and they were few and far between. The challenge might be a little high, since you get only three lives to complete a championship. Fortunately, there's a nifty option to turn off automatic catch-up by computer racers, which evens the odds a bit. Some of the forest textures looked flat on some tracks, and it would've been nice to have an option to play your own music CD during a race - but frankly, these complaints hardly affect the bottom line: For any gamer looking for a uniquely fresh adrenaline rush, Sled Storm makes for one very worthy purchase.
PlayStation 2GameSpy (May 14, 2002)
If you're searching for the ultimate in authentic snowmobile racing simulation, this isn't it. But if it's an extremely fun, fast-paced racer (that will exercise your thumbs like few other games) that you're looking for, don't miss Sled Storm 2. It's the snowbound sleeper hit that will entertain you months after the snow melts, deep into summer. And that's saying something.
PlayStation 2Operation Sports (Mar 21, 2002)
Sled Storm is an arcade racer. I think once people get off of the SSX on Sleds mentality they will really begin to like this game. I cannot stress enough that even though these games look very much alike on the outside, they really are two different animals altogether. Sled Storm is a very fast, action packed racer thru some of the finest environments around. EA Sports Big has once again delivered the big air, big stunts, big hits, and big competition we have come to know and love them for.
80 (Sep 22, 1999)
PlayStation 2GamePro (US) (Mar 12, 2002)
Don't call it a comeback. Instead, call SledStorm a loose interpretation of the original. While its snowmobile competition retains the fast-paced arcade action of its predecessor, this new SledStorm takes the gameplay one step further as races now take place on some truly crazy, fantastical courses. Levels are colorfully vivid with a lot to see, plus the frame rate speeds at a consistent pace without any slowdown.
PlayStation 2GameSpot (Mar 13, 2002)
Purists will undoubtedly become frustrated with Sled Storm's unrealistic AI and collision detection issues. But there are plenty of hidden sleds and characters waiting to be unlocked by reaching certain trick point totals or by placing well enough on a particular track. There's even an additional gameplay mode waiting for those who complete the entire championship. Ultimately, Sled Storm uses the SSX formula well, and anyone who enjoys a challenging arcade-style racer should have fun with the game.
PlayStationThe Video Game Critic (Jan 29, 2000)
In terms of scenery, there's not much to see, but snowy ramps and shortcuts can be found all over the place. You can even catch some air and perform trick combinations. In addition to off-road tracks, there are also motorcross-style courses which tend to be more repetitive than fun. The music is dominated by Rob Zombie and his omni-present "Dragula", but I guess it could be worse, right? No, not really! Sled Storm isn't spectacular, but it does provide competitive winter racing action, especially with multiple players.
PlayStation 2Game Informer Magazine (Apr, 2002)
I have some very mixed feelings about Sled Storm. On the one hand, it's a nice-looking racer that deliver pummeling, breakneck action from start to finish. On the other, I have a problem with the way that EA Big seems to have stripped the Sled Storm franchise of the unique personality it once had. SS is just SSX with sleds, and I already own Tricky.
PlayStation (Apr 18, 2002)
PlayStation 2PSX Extreme (Apr 02, 2002)
Sled Storm can deliver a good sense of fun, and the ruthless AI does make the game more challenging, perhaps giving it more replay value. But the fun can wear down rather fast. The overall game just plays too much like SSX: Tricky, hindering the lasting appeal of the game, and also lowering the longevity. It's definitely worth a rental; though, since placing high (1st or 2nd) in the latter levels is such an arduous task, most gamers won't have the pleasure of opening the last couple levels, and this lack of forgiving play may turn off the average gamer.
PlayStation 2Game Informer Magazine (Apr, 2002)
Overall the production value on this game is solid, but since the gameplay is neither groundbreaking nor terribly engaging - the game just falls right into the middle of the pack. Not a bad rental, but not the sequel I had hoped it would be.
PlayStation (Apr 13, 2002)
Alles in allem ein (weiteres) Spiel der Reihe "been there, done that" - gab es alles schon irgendwo einmal, bietet nichts neues.
PlayStation 2Gameplanet (Apr 23, 2002)
Overall then Sled Storm given the EA Big treatment ends up being a good, fun play but falls short of being great. The level design and visuals are fantastic not to mention the sound quality. While it has some obvious improvements over the PSX original it loses some believability in the process and therefore in our opinion can't be considered to be a major progression for the series. As an arcade racer though it is in the top bunch and is definitely leaps and bounds ahead of the snow sled competition (Arctic Thunder). It has an amount of longevity due to the challenging gameplay but you may find some of the fun starting to wear a bit thin after playing levels over and over in order to progress. We reckon it's at least definitely worth a hire so you can see if it's your kind of game but don't expect to finish it in a hurry!
PlayStation 2GameZone (Mar 25, 2002)
Sled Storm isn't a great game, but it isn't horrible either. As I said before, some gamers will enjoy it more than others. I suggest that you try it, but don't buy it unless you're certain that you will get your money's worth. Much like beauty, entertainment is in the eye of the beholder.
PlayStation (UK) (Apr 14, 2002)
It's hard to recommend that you go out and spend your money on Sled Storm. Certainly don't play it expecting something of SSX's depth or calibre, although unfortunately it's obvious that EA wanted this title to be just that. My advice is to rent it, and have fun for the two days of play you're likely to get out of it. What starts off to be a fun little arcade racer turns out to be a sadly wasted opportunity in the wake of far superior alternatives. Hopefully EA Canda's other 'BIG' game, FreekStyle, will take a different approach.
PlayStation 2GamesFirst! (Jun 11, 2002)
Those who think about purchasing this game might want to rent it first. Overall the game is not so horrid that no one would want to play it, but it's certainly not fantastic either. Early frustrations can kill an otherwise solid game, even if there is something to look forward to. Sled Storm is such a game. Those who play this thinking they will get another SSX will be greatly disappointed. This is for those who walk the line between enjoying racing as well as performing aerial tricks. These will be the gamers who get the most out of this game.
PlayStation 2The Video Game Critic (Feb 20, 2011)
Sled Storm is a little artificial for my taste, but if you're up for some winter racing fun, it serves its purpose.
