All in all, Contra Spirits is a magnificent, fun and incredibly polished game.
Total! (Germany) (Mar, 1994)

Check out Contra under whatever name you can find it. It's the business!

There really is nothing more to say, except the whole game's slick, professional, and well put together. Try as I might I can't find a major fault with it. If you like shoot-'em-ups, this is for you.
More than just a game, this is an all-singing, all-dancing, all-murder and mayhem experience you've just GOT to have and if I was one of Nintendo's rivals I'd poop my pants if I saw this. Contra Spirit is exactly the sort of game console freaks have been waiting for - and this cart more than delivers. Grab this one a bit quicker and remember to thank CVG for telling you all about it!
The Video Game Critic (Jan 29, 2000)
As one of the better shoot-em-ups for the SNES, this game has it all! One or two players can blast their way through six harrowing missions to save the planet from invading aliens. Besides firing at everything that moves, you'll leap over fireballs, hang from rails, and perform death-defying somersaults. You're also equipped with a few smart bombs, and can even commandeer tanks and plow right through those alien bastards. Although mainly a side scroller, two missions offer an overhead view, providing a nice change of pace. The bosses look absolutely disgusting. Contra's controls take a bit of getting used to at first, especially when it comes to dropping to the ground. The game offers a few continues, but no passwords, so your journey is going to be a long one. But at least with Alien Wars, you know it's worth the effort.
The graphics are a large improvement over the NES (obviously) with medium-sized, colourful and well animated sprites amid atmospheric backdrops. The music is quite satisfying and is some of the best I have ever heard on a Snes cart, shame about the sound effects, while although they are satisfying, they lack the oomph of some games (like Blackthorne / Blackhawk's meaty shotgun.) It is quite hard compared to some games and lacks any sort of password/battery backup system, so if you want to beat it, be prepared for a fairly long sitting (or standing, or lying down, whatever) session.
This game is not only the hottest action game to appear for the Super NES, it's the best thrill for the money to come along for any system in some time.

If you are a fan of the original Contra you should definitely head down to your local used game shop and pick this one up. If not, maybe you should try this one. The added features of two guns, nukes, and variable difficulties really make this installment better than the games before it. Be sure to leave this one be if you have anger management problems.
The hard skillsetting will give stubborn players something to do the nearest month or so! I can´t praise this game enough so that this review doesn´t end up in a mess of different superlatives like superb, great and brilliant I will just end the review by saying that if you don´t have anything against brilliant platform/action games then go get this game!!

Contra III is fast paced, fun and exciting. This title is so action packed you can barely stop to breathe. While the "easy" setting is pretty simple, the higher difficulty levels provide more than formidible opposition. With the extensive use of the SNES's scaling and rotation abilities, the graphics are incredible. The soundtrack has bass so heavy you can feel the floor rumble. This game absolutely kicks!

The Retro Spirit (Dec 23, 2012)
Retro Game Reviews (May 03, 2015)
Contra III: The Alien Wars is a superb addition to the franchise and Konami really took things up a notch for the series' 16-bit debut. However, it's just a shame that the difficulty is so high as it will likely put off some gamers and they'll miss out on some great run 'n' gun action.
RetroGame Man (Oct 31, 2016)
In summary, this is a beautiful run and gun game made even better with the inclusion of cooperative gameplay – there is nothing like blowing up bad guys with a buddy! This game is also hard (so don’t expect to beat it anytime soon) but highly replayable and worth the $50-$60 that it will cost you to obtain a copy nowadays!

Cubed3 (Sep 27, 2003)
It's hard to express in words the excellence of this game, pure enjoyment from the very first level, to the very last boss. You just have to play this for yourself, NOW.
Where Contra III isa bit weak isin the SNES slowdown department. It's not Konami's fault - in fact, they did remarkably well considering the amount of movement on the screen at any given time. When setting off a bomb during gameplay, however, the action practically comes to a stop. Explosions of large objects slow the action down as well. If other game designers follow Konami's lead, the future of SNES software looks very bright. I count three winners already, and I'd bet their best is yet to come.
Play Time (Sep, 1992)
The Game Hoard (Dec 07, 2017)
Contra III is admittedly just about jumping and shooting for the most part, but it makes the shooting satisfying and interesting and the importance of dodging keeps the game intense even at the simplest moments. Being one small hit away from losing one of your lives and whatever weapon you’re holding keeps the action important even at the simplest moments. That doesn’t help to make a few of the simpler or longer boss fights more interesting, but it makes the moment to moment experience exhilarating. However, it’s hard to ignore that the game denies you content unless you chose its hardest difficulty, which has a far less intelligent design behind it than the easier difficulties.
