Activision Spider Fighter is a cross between Demon Attack and Space Invaders... on crack! With an insect theme and creative enemies, it's fast as Hell and a damn good time.
Atari 2600Woodgrain Wonderland (Feb 16, 2018)
Spider Fighter is incredibly colourful, with smooth control and sometimes overwhelming action. It’s closer to the chaotic Demon Attack model of shooters than the more regimented Space Invaders/Galaxian style. Soundwise, I really like the almost military-marching sound your shots make as you fire continuously. While not the greatest game Activision ever produced (that’s a pretty tall order), Spider Fighter is one of the better slide-and-shooters available for the 2600.
Spider Fighter falls into a familiar, overworked category of video games. You control the side-to-side movement of a cannon along the bottom edge of the screen. Your object is to shoot enemies overhead for points before they destroy your cannons. And every time you annihilate a complete wave of the space attackers, another more deadly wave sets up. If that sounds like Space Invaders and other games, it should. But there's a lot more to Spider Fighter.
Atari 2600The Game Hoard (Apr 07, 2018)
What you see is all you get with Spider Fighter, but this small package is pretty solid. Other than a few issues with bug placement, Spider Fighter provides an easy to enter and fun to repeat task of shooting down spiders with a bit of strategy thrown in despite its rather manic escalating pace.
Atari 2600TeleMatch (May, 1983)
Atari 2600Atari HQ (2000)
The colors are the best feature of this game. Sounds are about average, as is gameplay. For the novice player, Spider Fighter is a nice intermediate-level action game that brings decent enjoyment without corresponding levels of frustration. But 2600 players who are familiar with Activision's usual efforts (which are exceptional overall) might feel a bit let down by Spider Fighter.
Atari 2600Tilt (Jul, 1983)
Enième adaptation des Space invaders, Spider fighter s'imposera auprès des plus jeunes par son graphisme et son animation mais ne laissera pas un souvenir impérissable aux joueurs confirmés.
Atari 2600The Video Game Critic (Nov 23, 2005)
It's immediately fun and engaging, but the thrill doesn't last. Once the difficulty plateaus, skilled gamers can play this game almost indefinitely. The main problem is how the "master nest" always enters from the left side. Often you can blow it away as soon as it appears. Designer Larry Miller attempted to address this problem by making the nest temporarily invincible when it first enters. Unfortunately, this invincibility doesn't last long enough to make a major difference. Another problem is the excessive number of "free lives" awarded. To earn one, all you have to do is protect the fruit at the top of the screen for an entire wave, and believe me, that fruit is never really in any danger. Consequentially, even during a bad stretches your cannons are replaced as fast as you lose them. It's far from perfect, but Spider Fighter is still a blast for novice gamers. Note: Unlike most 2600 games, the A difficulty setting is actually easier.
