It is a stunning game with some truly staggering power ups and fast, twisted zap the mothers action. Go get it!
Gameplay is smooth and the difficulty is just the right amount to keep things interesting but not frustrating. Two-player simultaneous mode is available as well for a good time.

O TwinBee! How I lament your absence in America! Though you are but a simple, ordinary shmup, your formula is classic and brilliant. ‘Tis nothing but a shame that Stinger is the only watered-down TwinBee representation we shall ever see. I bid Konami come to their senses and release a Stateside compilation, that all Westerners might taste of the series’ goodness.
NESVideo Chums (Nov 06, 2015)
As a fan of the TwinBee series, I must say that I expected much more out of Stinger. If you love the series then it's worth checking out but anyone just searching for a great retro shooter should probably look somewhere else.
NESThe Game Hoard (Nov 20, 2019)
Stinger has an interesting and kooky look thanks to its weird plot and the strange appearances of its enemies, but these don’t impact the play really since it’s all surface level strangeness. A few mercies prevent you from being underpowered in this shoot ’em up, but it has fairly straightforward gameplay with quick deaths and enemies who are mostly dealt with through good weaponry rather than smart flying. The bell upgrade system asks for some restraint, at least when you’re weak, and co-op can spice things up especially with the special maneuver where you can line up for a more powerful joint laser attack, but there’s nothing uniquely captivating about it despite having pretty solid shoot ’em up design.

Still, playing Stinger again did bring back some fond memories. Most of the boss fights are fun and whimsical, with some major opponents being a big hunk of watermelon spewing out tons of seeds and a note-firing boom box. This is a reasonable solid NES shooter — it just hasn't aged well in my eyes over the many years since I'd last spent an evening with it. Back in the day, I loved playing this game — nowadays, I can't see it being worth more than an hour or two of my time every few years.
