GenesisSega Pro (UK) (Apr, 1992)
Basically this is Final Fight for the Mega Drive. Great graphics and some amazing moves. This is the best beat-'em-up game yet for the Mega Drive. Buy it and you won't be disappointed. (Could have been a bit tougher, though...)
GenesisJoypad (Oct, 1991)
GenesisNetjak (Jul 16, 2002)
While it's not the most difficult game, Streets of Rage is still extremely fun. I even prefer this to Golden Axe in terms of Genesis beat 'em ups. If you don't have this, what the hell are you waiting for? It's ten dollars - one of the best deals you can make, period.
But for me the thing which really makes the game is the sheer number of moves at your fighter's disposal, especially when fighting with a chum. Watch those bad guys count the spinning stars as you dust them down with a flying kick after using your buddy as a human trampoline! Buy this and soak your pants - it's that good!

Streets of Rage est le beat-them-up que tous les possesseurs de Megadrive attendaient !
GenesisThe Video Game Critic (Apr 24, 2004)
Speaking of music, the Genesis isn't known for its audio, but the music in Streets of Rage is simply amazing. Each of these catchy techno jams gets under your skin and really pumps the adrenaline. In terms of graphics, the characters are nicely animated and the scenery is quite detailed, especially the gorgeous city skylines. You can smash up some of the scenery (like phone booths) to reveal power-ups and weapons. And like most fighting games, it's perfectly acceptable to eat strange food you find laying in middle of the road. Weapons include baseball bats, pipes, and - my favorite - the bottle. Not only can you smash it over some goon's head, but then you can stab him with the broken end! The gameplay is remarkably tight in terms of control and design. Bad guys don't require an inordinate number of hits, and the stages are just the right length. Streets of Rage is a absolute classic that seems to get better with time. Play it and love it.
Genesis1UP! (Sep 26, 2008)
GenesisRetro Game Reviews (Dec 17, 2015)
Although Streets of Rage was bested by its sequel it's still an amazing game that holds up extremely well today. The combat is so enjoyable whether you're playing alone or with a friend and even if you're not a fan of the genre you'll probably still find many things to like due to its superb, high quality gameplay.
GenesisShin Force (Jun 08, 2016)
While Streets of Rage lacks the depth of its sequels, it's worth playing for the sake of completeness. There are some imposing bosses here that you won't find in the other games. If we pretend the sequels don't exist then Streets of Rage is a good answer to Final Fight. Which do gamers remember more? I found it hard to replay Streets of Rage because Streets of Rage 2 overshadows it in every way. Streets of Rage 2 is a work of art, but the original game laid the foundation for it. It was a very solid foundation indeed.
WiiFNintendo (Jun 01, 2011)

GenesisThunderbolt Games (Aug 17, 2010)
Despite the revival of 2D games on XBLA and PSN, with many retro games receiving HD treatment, Sega’s back catalogue of franchises are either over-milked and even ruined (yes Sonic, Phantasy Star), or plain ignored (Comix Zone, Soleil, Wonderboy). A fourth version was planned on the Dreamcast but canned as the beat-em-up genre was no longer cool. But that was then. Old-school is back and Streets of Rage is non-stop fighting action that certainly has a place amongst the Mega Drive’s defining games. Take advantage of the fact this franchise is over-milked and get this on whatever platform you can, there is no excuse not to play this.
Final Fight, move over!! This is the type of fighting game I've been waiting for since Fighting Street! Two players, 40 attacks, 8 levels, large bosses, and music that rivals Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of rage is the best fighting game around! let's see how Street Fighter 2 turns out...
GenesisMean Machines (Sep, 1991)
Streets of Rage is THE beat 'em up for Megadrive owners to buy. The action is great, especially with two players on-screen at once! For once, the players act as a team, using each other to produce moves not available in one-player mode. The graphics are great. The sprites are excellent, and at times the screen is chock-a-block with thugs ready to send you to your doom! The backdrops are similarly detailed, although the scenery on each level could've done with being a bit more varied. My one substantial gripe is the fact that the game doesn't present much of a challenge on EASY mode. Gary and I completed the game in two-player without using one continue! However, put the difficulty level on HARD and the action is made all the more enjoyable and challenging. Beat 'em up fans should check this out as soon as it hits the streets.
Game GearGamePro (US) (Jul, 1993)
Streets of Rage is nonstop, finger-pumping action, definitely the hottest street brawl for the Game Gear to date. Fans of Streets of Rage for the Genesis won't be disappointed by this portable version. Sharp graphics, smooth animation and intense challenge guarantee this cart will be all the rage!
Game GearHobby Consolas (Dec, 1992)

Game GearVideo Games (Nov, 1992)
SEGA Master SystemRetro Game Reviews (Dec 17, 2015)
Streets of Rage is a remarkable port of the 16-bit classic and Sega should be commended for including just about everything from the original. It does have a few flaws that affect the gameplay but overall Master System fans should be extremely happy with what's here.
GenesisRetro Archives (Jul 02, 2017)
Game GearMean Machines (Nov, 1992)
A fun beat 'em up which can be a bit frustrating but which still fares favourably.
Nintendo 3DSFNintendo (Jan 01, 2014)

You can play Streets of Rage by yourself or team up with a friend. When waging war against the syndicate in two-player mode, you can pull off a variety of team tactic moves such as somersaults and airborne attacks. Whether playing solo or with a partner, the action takes place in the inner city, on beach front property, on bridges, aboard a ship, in a factory, on a freight elevator, at the syndicate headquarters and, of course, on the city streets.

SEGA Master SystemPlay Time (Aug, 1993)
GenesisPower Play (Oct, 1991)
Game GearPower Play (Dec, 1992)
GenesisThe Game Hoard (Sep 21, 2018)
Streets of Rage hits all the right marks when it comes to making an enjoyable beat ’em up, but it misses being exceptional by being too reserved in its battle design. It manages to keep the combat interesting even when you learn the effectiveness of the jump kick with packs of dangerous enemies and bosses who can shake up how you need to approach them, foes having just enough of an advantage to achieve a balance of being actual threats without overwhelming the player. The game could do with distributing its small amount of content more evenly across the experience, but the brawling doesn’t lose its luster even when you’re punching the same familiar faces a bit too often because of that difficulty balance.

With Final Fight also available on the VC, slap-em-up fans can't really go wrong by downloading both, but if you only want to spend your points on one then I'd say Streets of Rage offers more bang for your buck.
WiiNintendo Life (Feb 20, 2007)
With Streets of Rage 2 expected to be available on the Virtual Console soon you could argue that there's no point in giving this a spin. While it's true that the second game is much better, we still have a soft spot for Streets of Rage. It lacks the depth of Streets of Rage 2 but is still very enjoyable and easy to get into, and certainly puts the SNES conversion of Final Fight in the shade.

SEGA Master SystemRetro Archives (Jul 02, 2017)
WiiIGN (Feb 20, 2007)
Streets of Rage is an awesome title if you’ve never ripped through the franchise before now, but with the knowledge of its successors (particularly Streets of Rage III), it’s hard to go back to the original. The graphical presentation is just a notch higher than Sega Master System, the audio is generic and offers only extremely short snippets of digitized voice samples, and the amount of reused assets (enemies and bosses specifically) cuts the lasting appeal short. Still, Streets of Rage is an awesome chunk of history for both the SEGA Genesis and the brawler genre, and if you’ve already invested in a pair of classic controllers – and have a friend that’s into beat-em-ups as well – Streets of Rage should last you at least a few entertaining hours. For the more conservative VC shopper out there, you may want to hold out for the sequels which are undoubtedly on the way.
SEGA Master SystemMean Machines (May, 1993)
Sadness abounds in this unimaginative and dated beat 'em up. Although not completely awful it's just too average to warrant more than a spark of interest which quickly dies when you've started playing it.
GenesisJust Games Retro (Dec 10, 2012)
That’s the first Streets of Rage. It’s pretty enough and responsive enough, but kind of forgettable. As with most games like this, 2-player co-op is where the game really shines, and the extra little twist at the end is brilliant fun. Otherwise, fans of the genre will enjoy another fairly standard entry, but it’s not until Streets of Rage 2 that the game starts to stand on its own.
GenesisHonestGamers (Mar 06, 2005)
For what it is — an assassination attempt upon the life of Final Fight — Streets of Rage is a solid enough title. Compared to the steak-and-potatoes of 'Rage 2, Warriors of Fate, or other later brawlers, its flavor merely hints at better things to come.

Streets of Rage is still an enjoyable game to play over and over just like its sequels, only to a much lesser degree. If you're a Streets of Rage fanatic that must have all three games in your collection (I certainly did), I would recommend getting this one. It's great to have it around and it's a fun game to play from time to time. However, if you just get one game in the series, this isn't the one you want.
GenesisPlay Time (Dec, 1991)
Game GearRetro Archives (Jul 02, 2017)
iPhoneSlide to Play (Jul 24, 2009)
Remember our iPhone Gamer’s Bill of Rights? Well here’s a quick refresher: "Port games FOR the iPhone, not just ONTO the iPhone." What we like is a game that has been ported for the iPhone, but improves or adds to the original. Streets of Rage is a good dose of nostalgia, but it feels like a hasty port, and our frustration with it has overpowered that nostalgic feeling.

Game GearRetro Game Reviews (Dec 18, 2015)
Streets of Rage on the Game Gear almost feels like a Lite version of the beat-em-up classic. It's a real grind with barely any enjoyable moments, dodgy controls and flawed gameplay mechanics and my advice is to stick to the Mega Drive and Master System games instead.
