In Submarine Commander the player is in command of submarine in the Mediterranean. His mission is to to destroy all enemy convoys moving on the sea by using strategic map, sonar, periscope and torpedoes. Hostile ships are composed of shells and depth charges. The game features nine difficulty levels with different number of enemies, fuel, torpedoes and charges. The control is done by using the joystick and keyboard commands.

Atari easter egg

Selecting the sonar display then pressing fire on the joystick and ending the game replaces the text "GAME OVER" at the top of the results screen with "BY D M LOCK", the programmer of the original Atari version.

Morse Message

The morse code in the beginning of the game says "Programmed by Gary York OSI".
