Despite its aforementioned issues, I am having a blast with NBA Playgrounds, especially given the fact I now basically own a portable version of the closest I’ll get to a new NBA Jam or Street. I would definitely not recommend getting the game in other platforms, though. It at least shows potential for improved future installments. Now if you excuse me, I’m about to open another booster pack. Please give me Dirk, please give me Dirk!
NBA Playgrounds is a flawed game, but a fun one. Single player modes are playable but can feel like a bit of a slog for all but the most hardcore fans. Multiplayer fares much better, delivering an enjoyable experience that works well both online and off. The long-awaited update changes some mechanics but doesn’t address some of our frustrations surrounding shooting and especially with frequent duplicates in card packs. If you’re looking for a decent arcade baller on Switch, Playgrounds is your only choice for now, but you could certainly do worse even with a more diverse selection.
NBA Playgrounds is a game that is instantly playable - but the more you chip away at it, the more you're disappointed by the lack of content at release. It can be fantastic to pick up and play when you’re with a group of friends, but the lack of online multiplayer at launch means you’ll find yourself enjoying Playgrounds less and less very quickly.
When the review key for NBA Playgrounds arrived, the accompanying note assured me online play should be available within a few days. That was around a week ago, and "Online" is still nothing more than a grayed out option on the main menu, even though I've cleared numerous tournaments and unlocked dozens of players. There's no Season mode, and the game's design is sufficiently frustrating that I can't easily find any local competition to compete against, so I'm not particularly motivated to keep playing until some of that is addressed. You may enjoy the game more than I ultimately did, though, if you're able to gather your friends for a few afternoons of casual gaming. Then again, they might resent you for asking them to play. It's hard to say until you try...
