Granted some features like the grind rebalancing have been available in a previous release of Phantasy Star in a 2500 collection, but it’s nice to see them carried over. But besides all that this is another quality port from M2 with just the right kind of additions to make playing an aged classic more tolerable and also more fun. The only thing missing is something like an auto-battle feature which would’ve been nice, but I’m also getting old and lazy. If you’re into first-person dungeon crawlers or just stopping by to revisit an old classic then it’s an easy recommendation.
As someone who loves retro RPGs yet has never played Phantasy Star before, I'm amazed at how great of a game it is. When you factor in all of the awesome additions in this Sega Ages release, it's a definite must-buy for old-school RPG fans.
Phantasy Star is a game older than me, and since I know Kim will say “that doesn’t take much”, it’s older than Kim as well (take that Kim). 1988 was the year of release, and 30 years later I finally got to play the game. Could a game this old keep up with modern times though?
