SwitchJoy (Feb 03, 2019)
Wargroove is, without a doubt, the Switch’s first tentpole release of 2019. A worthy spiritual successor to the dormant Advance Wars franchise, Wargroove takes up the mantle of the generation’s best strategy RPG through its nuanced combat, near endless replayability, and suite of creation and sharing tools that will keep Wargroove’s community thriving for years to come. I sure hope this isn’t the last we see of this series, and I have a hunch that it won’t be.

A loving tribute to Advance Wars that's generous with its time and skilful with its execution.
Wargroove is a deeply engaging strategy game that has the potential to continue to thrive and develop for years to come with a dedicated player base of creators. While I’ve already enjoyed much of the rich single-player content Chucklefish Games has developed for the base experience, I’m very excited to see what new campaigns and scenarios I’m going to be able to play when I revisit the game after launch.

Wargroove is the Advance Wars successor its long-neglected fans have been waiting for. It faithfully revives the tactics I loved that series for while putting plenty of its own spins on the concept. Campaign levels do have a tendency to go on longer than they should considering its lack of mid-match saving outside of being able to quit and pick back up where you were later. But when you add in its extra modes, loads of unlockables, and amazing level editor and it’s a game I’m excited to keep playing far past its campaign.

Into The Breach in seinen knackigen Gefechten so auszeichnete.

Unlike a lot of indie-level titles, Wargroove is truly fully featured. It’s got a solid story mode, but that’s just the start. The side modes and especially the map editor give you a lot of bang for your buck. Add on the impressive presentation and you’ve got a damn fine way to whittle away the hours until Nintendo decides to revive one of its long-dormant IPs.
