The Tales of Monkey Island series seems to be evolving with every new chapter. Lair of the Leviathan moves the story forward with a more colorful look, a new variety of puzzles and challenges, and a deeper story that contributes a few nice layers to the overall arc.

"Lair of the Leviathan" is the best chapter yet, and it thrills me for the future of the series. Halfway through, Telltale has proven that they know what they're doing. Bring on the next!

Telltale Games continues to successfully introduce the world of Monkey Island to a whole new audience whilst keeping long-term fans satisfied with great gameplay, rib-tickling humour and plenty of nods to past outings. Episode 3 Lair of the Leviathan is every bit as good as the last two entries, if not better thanks to some much-welcomed tweaks.

"Lair of the Leviathan" é um ótimo exemplar da franquia "Monkey Island" e é o melhor capítulo até agora de "Tales of Monkey Island". O desafio dos puzzles melhorou bastante em relação ao visto no anterior, "The Siege of Spinner Cay", mas o roteiro não perde espaço e continua disparando ótimas piadas e referências ao universo pop e a eventos da própria série. Ainda é um pouco curto demais, mas é essencial para fãs de um bom adventure gráfico.

At the risk of sounding like broken record, the latest in the Tales of Monkey Island series is the best yet. Somehow, the developers continue to improve upon the winning formula, with increasingly sharp writing and witty gags. Let's just hope Telltale Games is able to keep up this astounding pace with the remaining two episodes in the series. As per usual, Lair of the Leviathan closes on a cliffhanger ending that leaves us craving more.

It's a joy to see the Monkey Island franchise so thoroughly rejuvenated in this era of bigger, better and more bad-ass, and with great puzzles, good looks and such insight into the unique sense of humour that helped make this series so beloved in the first instance, Lair of the Leviathan is the perfect showcase piece for a studio hitting their stride at exactly the right time, and a fine, fun game besides.

After beating Tales of Monkey Island Chapter 3: Lair of the Leviathan, it felt as though it was shorter than the other chapters so far in the series. After a little while I realized why: the puzzles were clear, and it wasn't that there was less content, just that it was more intuitive, and there were less times where a solution was convoluted, and more times where even the harder puzzles could be solved by logic. It's a step in the right direction for the series and the point-and-click adventure, and a method of development that I'd like to see Telltale continue with the two remaining episodes. Best episode yet? I'm not too sure about that, but there's no doubt that each new story is more polished than the last, something that will hopefully continue throughout the year.

Lair of the Leviathan not only clears "great", but sails way into the depths of "historically fantastic." It is gorgeous, hilarious, intelligent, and balanced. It stands just shy of Chariots of the dogs as the second-best Telltale game ever made and is a sobering reminder of why we don't accept less than great from such a talented developer, because this is the incredible brilliance that we know they can achieve—and Telltale delivers once again, creating new adventure superstars in Joe Pinney and Sean Vanaman in the process. Seeing how close this game is to a perfect score, though, I'm quietly reminded of the question that I ended my review of Chariots with—how on earth are they supposed to top this? I am sincerely excited to find out.

See, this latest episode not only continues the upward spiral that the previous two had started – it takes it and jumps it up another notch or two again, with some great puzzles, some brilliant writing and – shock horror – a memorable, amusing supporting cast. It’s a brilliantly enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours, and it’s won the heart of even the most ardent Monkey Island fanboy. Episode four cannot arrive soon enough.

Tales of Monkey Island Chapter 3: Lair of the Leviathan is the best chapter in the series so far, with several interesting plot developments, excellent use of characters, and the fact that it’s (as far as I saw) bug-free. I can’t really recommend you buy this episode on its own since it’s part of the overall storyline (and more tied to previous chapters than any Telltale adventure to date), but it’s an encouraging sign that the dip in quality in Chapter 2 was an aberration.

This latest chapter is a good follow-up to an otherwise disappointing second chapter. The back-to-basics dialogue choices, Insult Sword Fighting style of puzzles, as well as the confined interactions, make for a much more pleasant experience. New fans of the series should enjoy this one, while older fans may even adore it. The same old MI problems are present, but not a major distraction. Check this out (especially if you like disembodied skeleton-heads).

Overall, the third episode would have to be the best to date. The story flows nicely (helped by the superb cut-scenes), the puzzles aren't overly difficult and there is a reduced requirement to travel back and forth between locations (there are two main location in the Manatee that you will need to travel between) which is always a bonus. The visuals and audio again do the series justice, and the inclusion of the Pirate Face-Off contest will undoubtedly have old time Monkey Island fans reminiscing. T

Overall, the gameplay stays the same, albeit with some neat little Insult Sword Fighting puzzles thrown in to spice it up a bit. Guybrush is still crazily funny and a bit on the slow side (other characters are finding this out as well) while the story takes us on a great ride through laughs, puzzles, relationships and adventure. Anyone should be able to jump right into this chapter, but playing the first two would really help understand the story. When it comes to fans of the old game though, this chapter really shines.

The graphics were very crisp and polished and what I've always come to expect of the Monkey Island series, some of the scenes being bright and colourful and inviting. Every time I sit down and play one of the Monkey Island games I'm never disappointed and come away satisfied. I think this is one of the best episodes by far. Although there were a few things that did rattle my cage but they were down to purely human error. Again if you don't research, explore or ask enough of the right questions you can find yourself a bit lost and going over things again and again which can sometimes be a little repetitive. This as always has been a true delight to play and probably one of my favorite point and click adventures of all time that's easy to play with an interesting storyline to get you gripped from the very start. I look forward to many more exciting adventures with Guybrush Threepwood.

After being disappointed in episode 2 of the series, Tales of Monkey Island: Lair of the Leviathan was a pleasant surprise. With witty dialogue, puzzles that rely more on logic than guesswork and a story that keeps you intrigued, this is a game that is worth buying even if you haven't played any of the other two. If I haven't sold you, just remember: you talk two manatees into dating! That makes it all worthwhile.

WiiNintendo Life (Oct 31, 2009)
In terms of gameplay, chapter 3 of Tales of Monkey Island is obviously not much different from the previous games. There are some fun puzzles included, but they're still nothing more than figuring out what object to use with what other object. This episode is easily the best yet in terms of humour though, Murray alone makes this absolutely hilarious and is guaranteed to satisfy any fan of the old Monkey Island games. Yes, the audio and visual hiccups are still present, but by this point, we really don't expect Telltale to do anything this annoyance in the WiiWare version anymore.

WindowsAdventure Classic Gaming (Oct 28, 2009)
What Tales of Monkey Island does best is to move the game along with a strong thread of story and stay focused on the plot and the relationships of its characters. It has the humor and spirit of the classic Monkey Island series, but there is no denying that the episodic format has turned it into a different kind of adventure game than the original.

Ραντεβού λοιπόν στο επόμενο επεισόδιο, που έχει τον αινιγματικό, όσο και αβανταδόρικο, τίτλο ‘The Trial and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood’.

WindowsIGN (Sep 29, 2009)
Telltale seems to have found the right mix of talent and franchise in Tales of Monkey Island. The characters and setting give the developers a chance to combine the broad humor of Sam and Max with the slightly more grounded feel of the Wallace and Gromit games. The jokes are funny, the puzzles are challenging and both arise out of the overall story, which is genuinely interesting. It might be a bit hard to pick up the odd episode here or there, so the season actually requires a bigger investment than the others, but it's well worth it.

In the end we need to conclude that despite the decent quality the series has stalled with episode 3. With the second part you could notice a clear evolution, but with Lair of the Leviathan the devs seemed to have taken it easy. Less locations, easier and less inventive puzzles - eventhough there are a handful good ones - and a shorter playing time make this episode to be less than the previous ones. However, it's good enough to suggest to anyone and that's what we're doing. Those that weren't convinced yet can rest assured. For about 30 euros you get three decent to excellent episodes and there's two left to come in the future.

Offbeat and witty, with challenging puzzles which are particularly enjoyable in the early stages. Appealing, beautifully drawn graphics. A simple, easy to use interface. Proceed with a degree of caution if you cannot abide sliders or arcade mini-games - unless you have spare hair to pull and an extra set of teeth to grind. Overall, a game for anyone with a penchant for problem pondering and a love of the unusual.

Those who have played the first two games in the franchise and want to keep going to see how it all ends will find Tales of Monkey Island: Lair of the Leviathan to be a minor diversion in an otherwise great series. Unfortunately, most games, movies, books and all other forms of entertainment seem to slow down in the middle in order to set things up for what is hopefully a big climax. With two episodes to go, here's hoping that's what Telltale has in store. We stand at a crossroads; this will either be the inevitable lull before the big finale or the moment when Tales of Monkey Island came off the rails and lost its way. We'll know more next month when Guybrush's adventures continue in Episode 4.

WindowsPAL Gaming Network (PALGN) (Sep 29, 2009)
Lair of the Leviathan would be just another so-so middle episode of a Telltale episodic series if it weren't for the inclusion of everyone's favourite concentration of pure evil, Murray. While the game has some cool puzzles, like the aforementioned Pirate Face-Off and communicating with manatees through a tourist's phrasebook, there just doesn't feel like there's as much to do this time around as previous episodes. The plot is quite good, with some nice twists and turns, and the presentation is as good as its ever been, but as Guybrush closes in on La Esponja Grande, it just doesn't feel as climactic as it should. In any case, if you've subscribed to the series then you'll no doubt be pleased with the story in this episode, and if you're a Monkey Island fan just looking for some Murray action, there's plenty here for everyone.

Rarely are there games that can successfully manage to tickle the critical thinking and humor quadrants of the brain. Tales of Monkey Island – Episode 3: Lair of the Leviathan does this with ease, while showing players a little taste of old school gaming. This is an quest well worth continuing.

WindowsThunderbolt Games (Oct 19, 2009)
After the conclusion of The Siege of Spinner Cay, you wouldn’t have been out of line to speculate whether or not Telltale Games had – for want of a more romantic phrase – blown its proverbial load all in one go with their first attempt, Launch of the Screaming Narwhal. But Lair of Leviathan picks up the slack by creating a tighter point and click adventure as well as allowing its characters to sing and dance to much applause. Even a dip in quality towards the end can’t abate the feeling that Tales of Monkey Island has found a second wind in its sail.

WindowsGamer Limit (Sep 29, 2009)
Despite its ridiculously short playtime, Lair of the Leviathan fits in with the ongoing series, but its clearly a step backward from the first two. While the story remains stellar, the script continues to bring the laughs, and the music fits just right, its hard to look past the simple puzzles and limited settings. Though it may not be the most challenging or longest graphic adventure, it does a sufficient job at continuing Tales of Monkey Island’s signature charm, and ultimately leaves the player wanting more of Guybrush’s shenanigans.
