Game Boy AdvanceGame Vortex (2002)
We all know that Tetris is the one game to have on a deserted island. With Tetris Worlds, you get much more than the original. The ghost piece and piece saver may sound like small things, but they really add to the game. One reason that Tetris Worlds gets such a high score is the fact that everyone can play it. That, and the fact that there is an unlimited replay value too. Also, the new backgrounds are a lot of fun. Oh! I forgot about the new play modes. Well, I guess the one reason for the high score is the fact that Tetris Worlds is a total improvement in all areas over the past version.

Game Boy AdvanceGameZone (Oct 17, 2001)
Tetris Worlds isn't just the best Game Boy Advance puzzler available -- it's also one of the best puzzle games ever made. Tetris Attack still holds the top spot as puzzle game champ, while Columns and I.Q. hang on to second and third place. Looking back, each one of those games was released at least a year (usually more) apart from each other. Tetris Worlds isn't as groundbreaking as the other games listed, nor is it as original. But did anyone enjoy Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (the true sequel to the original game) any less, even though it was merely a harder version of the first game? Not at all. Despite what game companies will tell you, sometimes "more of the same" is exactly what we're looking for. Tetris Worlds is more of the same...and a whole lot more.

Tetris Worlds is one of the best translations of Tetris that I've ever played. Even the Minos storyline started to grown on me after a while, and the amount of new Tetris games included hold their own against other puzzle titles on the market. The Xbox Live support is just the icing on a particularly tasty cake. So if you're a Tetris fan, this is the version I recommend you check out - just remember my warnings when your dreams take a weird turn.

Make no mistake, Tetris is back for the GBA, and THQ has done a bang-up job with it. If you are a fan of puzzle games, or just a Tetris junkie, then go immediately to your local videogame retailer and grab a copy. Tetris Worlds is a beautiful version of a gaming classic, enhanced and beefed-up for the current market.

Besides those two minor hiccups, Tetris Worlds is a comprehensive disc that provides an above-average amount of block-dropping entertainment. Most of the new interpretations of Alexei Pajitnovs masterpiece are well-done and different enough to add an appreciable amount of substance, and its my firm belief that every gamer worthy of the title needs to own at least one copy of his landmark creation. If you dont already have one, Tetris Worlds is an excellent version of an outstanding game.

XboxGame Chronicles (Oct 01, 2002)
Tetris Worlds is highly addictive, partly because of the trance-like music, but mainly because it’s just so much fun. Even when it’s 3am and your eyes are bloodshot and your hand is permanently shaped like a wretched claw, you can’t help but say, “just one more time” when you finally lose. If you enjoy Tetris or just puzzle games in general, then Tetris Worlds is a great additional to your Xbox library. The Xbox version is easily the best version of this title with amazing music, gorgeous visuals, and a variety of gameplay options that will keep you glued to the screen for months to come.

Any gamer worth the name should have a copy of Tetris in his collection. For my money, the old Tetris Game Boy cart is still the best, with Tengen's black cart coming in a close second. Tetris Worlds is fun for a while, but it manages to add unnecessary complications and lousy music to a classic game, and as such, should only be bought if you're looking to fill that Tetris-shaped gap in your collection.

Tetris is a terrific game for kids. It's easy to grasp, understand, and play at any age above five, or so. It inspires creative thought, planning, strategy, and doesn't have a violent bone in its body. The annoying music, backgrounds, animations, and the unnecessary game modes work better with kids than adults. Kids will delight in those extras, whicb admittedly make Tetris a much less stuffy game. The multiplayer community, from what I saw, is fairly kid safe but, as always, you should exercise caution when letting kids go on Xbox Live. That said, you could always buy the older non-Live Xbox version, or the versions for other platforms. -Andrew S. Bub

Fortunately, Tetris is still as addictive as ever and it's a must have for portable gaming fans, which leads to the biggest problem with Tetris Worlds, the old Game Boy versions of the game still work and (at least Tetris DX,) provide most of the gameplay found here. Since the original Game Boy featured more than a few Tetris games over it's lifespan here's hoping someone tries a bit hard, optimizes a bit more, streamlines a lot more, and gives us a better playing Tetris experience than Tetris Worlds.

XboxGamesFirst! (Oct 01, 2003)
If you have an Xbox LIVE account, Tetris World allows you to battle it out with up to three other players simultaneously, which makes for a great deal of fun. Here, dancing is rarely a problem, as chances are that at least one of the three players is good enough to put blocks under you until you die. Online, all pretense of a storyline completely vanish, and the heart of the game shows through. And amazingly enough, when all is said and done, what you have is Tetris. Still addicting, still time consuming, and still a poor showing for your dollars when set on the shelf beside games built from concept on a modern system.

Game Boy AdvanceNintendoWorldReport (Aug 25, 2002)
To make it plain and simple, Tetris Worlds is a decent version of the classic puzzler for the Game Boy Advance, but overall even the years-old Tetris DX is a better version of Tetris.

GameCubeNintendoWorldReport (Aug 14, 2002)
Nobody is going to buy Tetris Worlds for its new options. People will buy it because it’s Tetris and because they haven’t discovered the many free versions that are floating the entire span of the internet. Tetris World’s discounted price of $30 is a bonus for a simple game, but it won’t be enough to capture more than the hardcore audience of Tetrisites.

You'll have your normal Tetris game and other variations including Cascade, Sticky, Fusion, Square and Hot-Line. There is even a story mode and the expected 4-player support. But when it comes down to it, Tetris Worlds just lacks in interest. In the story mode, you'll have 6 worlds to go through and you'll play in the 6 different play modes. But in actuality, there really isn't much of a story and besides; Tetris players don't play for the story, right? They play for the game.

GameCubeGameZone (Jul 20, 2002)
This game has been a total disappointment, as it does not live up to its prestigious heritage that other Tetris games had. Even with the extra modes, it still is basically the same game all over. It was a nice thought to add a storyline in the game, but other than the introduction, it doesn't go anywhere. If you are still craving a puzzle game, look to the older Tetris games, as they will quench your thirst.

WindowsIGN (Jan 09, 2002)
Tetris Worlds does add some new tricks to the mix, but the bottom line is, if you're looking for a good Tetris game, you can search through the bargain bin at your local software store and find a cheaper alternative than Tetris Worlds, or even download a shareware version of Tetris for free. Tetris Worlds isn't horrible, but it certainly doesn't shine over the original in any way.

PlayStation 2Gaming Target (Apr 23, 2002)
In the end though, all these changes sink Tetris Worlds. The change to the way that the pieces lock in makes Tetris just way too easy. It's not that Tetris Worlds is a bad game, it's decent enough and I have played enough Tetris in my day that any way I can get my fix is welcome. Hardcore Tetris fans will definitely want to give it a look, just don't expect it to become your new Tetris of choice. Thirteen years later and nothing can still top the NES and Game Boy versions.

If this game happened to be the only Tetris package available to Game Boy Advance owners, I'd actually recommend a purchase...even with the lack of a battery. But bless that backward-compatible feature of the GBA -- since Nintendo still manufactures and sells a greatly superior version of the game, Tetris fanatics (and those still new to the idea) should grab a copy of the original 8-bit rendition. Sure, it won't take advantage of the GBA's advanced capabilities...but then again, neither does Tetris Worlds

With the exception of Hot-Line, all of the modes are fun, and six modes means more replay value, but the lack of the ability to earn high scores sort of counteracts that. If you are a fan of puzzle games, you almost have to get this, because there are very few puzzle games on GCN. If you aren't, this game won't convert you to enjoying them.

One of the key draws of Tetris has always been its elegant simplicity--a simplicity that allows for open interpretation, which is attested to by the countless forms it has taken on consoles, the PC, cell phones, calculators, and various Web-based platforms over the years. Now, Radical Entertainment and THQ, the current holder of the Tetris license, have brought six different variations on the Tetris formula together for Tetris Worlds on the Xbox. With its wealth of gameplay modes and slick presentation, Tetris Worlds offers several solid interpretations of the classic Russian mindbender, though there's little here that hasn't been seen before.

Tetris Worlds is a good attempt at making Tetris a worthy next generation console title, but it simply falls short. There isn't enough quality material to push this game past the average level, but it's worth a rental for those that are interested in what's being done with the Tetris name.

If you've never played a version of Tetris and are wondering what the fuss is about, you probably wouldn't understand it from this version. Old time fans will also be unimpressed. Still, a straight re-release probably would have irked some also. Tetris Worlds comes not recommended.

GameCubeIGN (Jun 26, 2002)
I don't think I've ever been this unimpressed by a Tetris game in my entire life. I've been playing the game since it was conceived in the late 80s. I've seen how profound an influence it has had on modern puzzle game design. But, never, ever have I been so disappointed with Tetris. THQ's Tetris Worlds is below average and even for the discounted price, it's not worth the buy. The intended visual and aural "improvements" to the GameCube and Xbox versions were a waste of time. Instead the gameplay should have been totally reworked, especially the multiplayer mode. So, unless you're dying to just play Tetris -- any Tetris -- on your system, don't even bother with Tetris Worlds. The point is that there's nothing new and the peripheral elements such as art and music composition are dull to the point of being abominable.

Little more than an online update of a pretty dire Tetris update, Worlds simply isn't worth your cash, even if it's only 15 or 20 quid down the high street. Dig out your old Game Boy, or just find some web-based alternative, because Tetris is a brilliant puzzle game. Revel in its purity. Just don't waste your time here.

GameCubeGamesFirst! (Aug 30, 2002)
Tetris Worlds is the least entertaining version of Tetris that I have played. It was less entertaining than on my PC and less entertaining than on a game boy. I even had more fun playing Tetris on my roommate’s graphing calculator back in college. So, if you have another version of Tetris lying around the house, you would do well to avoid the current incarnation.

GameCubeCubed3 (Apr 12, 2003)
The reason I only gave gameplay 4 was not a reflection on Tetris itself, but there is simply not enough to offer apart from Tetris itself, which can be found in better forms for way cheaper, which is the general feel I felt throughout the game, and as a package, this game really can't cut it with some of the other console versions of Tetris in the past, and is a real let down.

Tetris Worlds presents us with a new evolution in Tetris playing. No, the game hasn’t gone 3D, but new modes appear, evolving the game the same way that bringing 2-player play did years ago. With this new cartridge, we have 6 different ways to play, the first being the classic Tetris game. Nothing beats this, and it will always be with me until the day I die. No matter how many variations on the theme are created, the original “tried-and-true” method just can’t be beat.

Verdict.

XboxTeamXbox (Jul 08, 2002)
I am not a Tetris fan, never was. In saying that, I must admit that Tetris is still addictive no matter what version it is. The extra modes and the multiplayer mode weren’t thought out enough and don’t really add to the overall Tetris experience. Is Tetris Worlds worth your $30? It is all relative on how you look at it. Is dropping $75 worth it to go see a hockey game? For me it is, but for many people it isn’t. If you are a die-hard Tetris fan, then Tetris Worlds will probably be right up your alley. For the rest of you, use your Xbox for something with a bit more kick. Can you say Halo? I knew that ya could.

PlayStation 2IGN (Apr 04, 2002)
In the end we find ourselves thoroughly disappointed with the successor to a once great series of puzzlers. Best likened perhaps to trying to improve on the ancient game of chess, the old adage of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" shoots into our skulls like the contents of dirty Civil War musket. If you're looking for a rewarding block-dropping experience however, save yourself the thirty-five bucks and pick up a portable version. Chances are it'll be cheaper, more fun, and less inclined to promote suicidal megalomania.

The graphics are pretty sparse, but the soothing, futuristic music sort of grew on me. The sexy female voice that whispers during the story mode was initially alluring but eventually got irritating. There's a new "ghost piece" feature, which shows a shadow of where the piece will land, and it's very helpful for beginners. Then there's the questionable "hold piece" move that lets you set aside a piece for later use. Where I come from that's considered cheating! I really wish THQ had spent less time on bells and whistles and more on the gameplay. Tetris Worlds left me feeling cheated and disgusted.
