That Orange Guy is a side-scrolling platformer in which the player character is a nameless hero in a orange suit. The basics follow the standard structure: the player navigates through the levels by jumping over obstacles and shooting weapons (there is a gun and a flame thrower which inflicts damage over time available) at enemies. Touching enemies or their projectiles lowers the health bar and when it gone, the player respawns at the last checkpoint. This can be avoided by using the shield which makes the player invincible for a short time. Using it requires energy which automatically fills up over time. The number of tries is not limited.

During the levels, the player will encounter additional obstacles like springs, thorns which fall from the ceiling when walking under them or conveyor belts. During some levels the level scrolls automatically forward, but in some cases the player can control how fast. In each level, there are also three buddies (represented by skull symbols) to find. After beating a level, the game rewards between one and three stars (one for finishing the level, one for no death and one for finding all skull symbols). Then the player returns to the overland map to choose the next level. While most are arranged in a linear fashion, sometimes there are multiple ways to take.
