Ghost Recon: Island Thunder is a great expansion, packed with plenty of goodies and enhancements that make the first Ghost Recon the standout it should have been.
WindowsNetjak (Dec 16, 2002)
All in all, if you have Ghost Recon, you need Island Thunder. My one and only complaint was that it takes fairly long to load the game from the desktop; and this was easy to overlook. I highly recommend this expansion to all Ghost Recon owners and even to future owners. If I had to give the expansion a rating, I would give it 9 stars out of 10—I enjoyed it more than the original, and for $19.99 it's a total steal for an expansion...
WindowsComputer Gaming World (CGW) (Jan, 2003)
The cynic might label Island Thunder as just more of same. But with eight new missions, tons of enhancements, and a refined multiplayer experience, Red Storm has delivered another worthwhile game.
XboxGamePro (US) (Aug 04, 2003)
The best part of Island Thunder is its price tag. At $10 less than a regularly priced Xbox game, this shooter is a bargain. Though it may seem to be a simple add-on, Island Thunder has enough features to make it feel like a brand-new game.
90 PC Gaming (Oct 27, 2003)
This game is about the best game I’ve ever played for the PC (IF YOU'RE INTO ARMY GAMES YOU’LL LOVE THIS!). Ghost Recon: Island Thunder has the best graphics I've seen in a long time. (Despite them now being outdated in today's standards) In this game you feel like your right in the middle of the fire fight, and you actually have to use stealth.....Which is a factor that has been lost in games for some time.... Although this game takes lots of patience and time to play, in the end your hail it for its realism.
WindowsGameZone (Oct 14, 2002)
As far as expansion packs go, Island Thunder has enough wonderful extra and multiplayer maps to add more fuel to Ghost Recon’s highly entertaining fire. Many gamers will still find the missions difficult and occasionally unfair, but this shouldn’t stop them from enjoying this excellent addition. If you own Ghost Recon, do yourself a favor and pick this one up.
XboxGame Freaks 365 (2003)
The Xbox Live play still drags everyone into Ghost Recon. It still is the best online experience available for the Xbox Live. For only $30, ($40 with a $10 Mail-In rebate inside the box) it is well worth the experience. There are 8 different levels spanning through vast jungles, run down cities, and lush mountain sides through the post-Castro era in Cuba. There are 5 downloadable desert levels to get from XBL by the end of 2003 that will add to the experience making this $30 game seem like it should have been $50. With 12 multiplayer levels, 4 from the original game that the fans voted on, Ghost Recon still brings it all to the table for your Xbox and Xbox Live. Go and pick this one up today. For only $30, how can you lose with this outstanding game with upgrades on the original?
XboxGame Chronicles (Aug 25, 2003)
Ghost Recon: Island Thunder isn’t your typical FPS. It is more much calculating and often more about team management than blazing gunfire. You setup and execute elaborate tactical assaults working as a leader of a team. If you don’t enjoy these management aspects then you will either want to pass on this title or rely strictly on the online elements where all of the players are humans rather than AI.
XboxGameZone (Sep 20, 2003)
Island Thunder isn’t simply a Ghost Recon add-on with different maps and enemies. This is, simply put, yet another stellar Ghost Recon experience with an interesting premise, challenging missions and the same great online multiplayer experience we’ve all come to expect from a Tom Clancy tactical action game. If you’re a fan of the Ghost Recon games, Island Thunder will make a wonderful addition to your library.
WindowsGame Chronicles (Nov 01, 2002)
Island Thunder (and for that matter, Ghost Recon) is a terrific game that almost qualifies as a genre buster. The only things keeping it from universal appeal are its difficulty and the patience required- not only to become a good player, but to effectively command your men in the heat of battle. Some gamers might not want to make that kind of effort. It’s their loss.
WindowsIGN (Sep 25, 2002)
Ghost Recon has had a pretty good run over the last couple of years. This one was a little more interesting to me than Desert Siege because of the atmosphere and cover rich environments, but it falls into the same category. It's a good expansion pack. It doesn't add anything extremely revolutionary, but adds 8 new well designed levels and some more multiplayer goodness.
XboxIGN (Aug 08, 2003)
Ghost Recon Island Thunder is an expansion pack to Ghost Recon in every sense except that you don't have to own the original to play GRIT. The additions to the single player campaign are outweighed by the frantic multiplayer action, making this a game for those who seek Live play over another squad-based single player experience.
XboxGame Informer Magazine (Aug, 2003)
In parts of southwestern Minnesota, there’s a saying. It goes a little something like this: "If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it." Obviously you can see the wisdom behind this statement; feel free to use it when appropriate. To this end, the Red Storm people have taken their popular Ghost Recon franchise and simply added new missions. Yeah, they’ve implemented some online functionality as well, but it’s basically the same game. Not that that’s a bad thing – GR was and still is a fantastic game. The question you have to ask yourself is whether or not you’re interested enough to plunk down more cash for a few new levels and online play. Let’s see if we can figure it out.

WindowsPC Zone Benelux (Dec, 2002)
WindowsGameSpot (Oct 01, 2002)
If you prefer your action games to be easy to pick up and put down, you probably won't get much out of Ghost Recon: Island Thunder. Specifically, the single-player game's group skirmishes require a great deal of patience to conquer. But if you're already a fan of tough tactical shooters and you're looking for a real challenge, you'd do well to invest in Island Thunder--its substantial single-player campaign and new multiplayer maps and modes (when you can get into a game) are definitely worth it.
80 (UK) (Sep 23, 2003)
So we reach pretty much the same conclusion we did back in January, except we're all the more charmed thanks to the low price. Island Thunder may not be the best-looking tactical shooter ever made, nor does it bring anything to the genre in terms of progress, but there's little else on Xbox worth looking at in the genre until Rainbow Six 3 shows up. At under twenty quid, this standalone expansion's Live features will give you more joy than most full-price titles, and any Clancy-style shooter fan would be doing themselves a disservice to miss out.
Xboxgames xtreme (Sep 12, 2003)
With the amount of modes, customizable kits and equipment in the game – Sixteen player battles, Ghost Recon: Island Thunder builds on the original and offers a much more rounded experience especially if you’re on LIVE. I’d recommend getting this game if you don’t own the previous and you like the kind of game it is. If you’re on LIVE and you have GR then you owe it to yourself to get this expansion and because it’s stand alone, you don’t have to worry about upgrading your original.
WindowsGamer's Pulse (Nov 19, 2002)
Island Thunder is a great add-on to a fine game. If you are a fan of the original you must pick up this expansion pack.
XboxXbox Gazette (Sep 02, 2003)
XboxThunderbolt Games (Aug 26, 2003)
Ultimately, the decision to purchase Ghost Recon: Island Thunder should come down to one thing: whether or not you have Xbox Live. Xbox Live gamers will find that it's a great game to play online, but I think a lot of non-subscribers will find the game not worth the price-tag. If you absolutely want to play the series, try and get your hands on the first game as the single player is much better. If you're a diehard Ghost Recon fanatic who has to have it all, then pick it up too, as it's basically an enhanced version of the first.
WindowsWithingames (Nov 20, 2002)
Ein großartiges Add-On.
XboxGame Over Online (Nov 30, 1999)
If you're looking at Ghost Recon: Island Thunder from a single-player perspective, you'd be best off making it a weekend rental. The single-player campaign is half the size of the original and the dossier is thin, resulting in a shortage of replay value. On the other hand, if you're looking to take your tactical skills online, Island Thunder breathes new life into the multiplayer experience, and the promise of additional missions in the coming months via Xbox Live is icing on the cake. If you fall into the later category, add Island Thunder to your arsenal and I'll see you out there on the battlefield.
XboxGameSpot (Aug 11, 2003)
Is Ghost Recon: Island Thunder for you? That's an easy question to answer if you played the original Ghost Recon. If you liked that game and were left wanting more, Island Thunder is exactly what you're looking for. However, if Ghost Recon didn't particularly wow you, there's nothing so fundamentally different here that your opinion will be changed. Finally, if you're completely new to the series, Island Thunder functions just fine as a stand-alone introduction to Ghost Recon, and with the full single-player campaign, the large number of maps and weapons, and the solid online support, there's a lot of bang for your buck here.

WindowsPC Games (Germany) (Nov 19, 2002)
WindowsPC Gamer UK (Dec, 2002)
Competent if rather unremarkable. Certainly aimed at the hardcore tactician gamer.

WindowsGameSpy (Oct 22, 2002)
Finally, there are a few new weapons of each type, but Island Thunder acts as if it can't be bothered to explain why you'd ever want to take them. With enough dinking around, you'll figure out basic facts like ... the MM-1 is a lot of fun for making noise and blowing people up. But there's exactly zero information about the advantages and disadvantages of these new weapons in relation to the older ones. (What do you expect from a series that steadfastly refuses to include visible models of the guns during gameplay?) Nevertheless, with its serviceable single-player game and a gem like the new Defend mode, Island Thunder is a tidy little bonus juuuust worth the price.
WindowsActionTrip (Oct 06, 2002)
Visually, Island Thunder is not much different from any other Ghost Recon game. Sure, the settings are different in a sense that you'll get to play in the jungle, amongst some strange rock formations and so on, but the 3D code looks generally the same as in any other GR game. The only real novelty (though not a particularly important one) are the chopper insertions. During landing, the helicopter will cause whirling trails of dust to rise from the ground, and strands of grass to sway and bend from the blast of air. A catchy scene, but as I said, it's hardly enough to make a difference. I should add though that the weather effects - the storms, pouring rain, and puddles are well-done and quite moody. The rest of the facets of this game bring absolutely nothing new over the original game.

For those of you looking for the not quite so action oriented FPS and like a little challenge, this might be your game. With so many strategy shooters coming out this series wrote the book on how it should be done. While this isn't a complete redesign or even modifiction of the series, the new layouts, maps and weapons are a welcome change and will keep Ghost Recon fans satiated untill the next installment.

XboxGameSpy (Aug 23, 2003)
Yet, for hitting owners of Ghost Recon with a $39.99 price tag, you'd expect a little more than what you get, which is a short campaign and some new maps for multiplayer. For others, it's a so-so single-player experience with some pretty annoying flaws, along with good multiplayer once you get some experience with it.
