PlayStation 3Defunct Games (Jun 22, 2012)
This PSone Classic introduces enough new elements to the genre to make Tomba feel like its own game. There are a few elements that went on to influence other Sony platformers, including LittleBigPlanet. Tomba is more of a workout than your typical platformer, but at the end you're rewarded with one of the PlayStation's best 2D action games. Tomba is definitely worth downloading.

Skillfully crafted classic gameplay and bacon-frying challenges make Tomba a winner. Moreover, it's the brain child of Tokuro Fujiwara, the creator of Mega Man and Ghouls 'N' Ghosts. Not a bad lineage and another compelling reason to pig out on this solid platform game.

Like Klonoa, Tomba is a state-of-the-art side-scroller, an almost perfect marriage between sprite-based characters and polygonal environments. But there's a heck of a lot more to it than running and jumping. This game is rich with RPG elements, and it packs so many little tasks and sidequests that it's hard to keep track of them all. Tomba is also satisfyingly long, not to mention one of the most humorous games ever made.

However, some people may find the tried and true gameplay a little too tired. Is Tomba one of the best side-scrolling platformers for the PlayStation? You betcha. Although gameplay isn't entirely innovative, it has some great new features that all platform fans should check out. Still though, the best part about the game is the opening movie where you are introduced to Tomba - who knew anyone could ride a pig that well?

An often forgotten jewel in the first Playstation's crown, Tomba stars a pink-haired boy with a penchant for biting pretty much everything he can get his mouth around. The game offers a unique blend of platforming and action, along with some minor puzzle solving and RPG elements, all wrapped up into a neat package.

A truly enjoyable game, Tomba! redefines the platform genre with RPG elements and a vast, nonlinear world. It's about as far as you can get from a standard platform game without leaving the genre entirely.

Tomba! has a couple of niggles, but it’s largely a well-built platformer with plenty to do. Even at $9.99 USD (the more expensive price for PlayStation One games), it’s still well worth your dollar. If you’re burnt out on the platforming genre, give this one a spin.

Tomba is a great game well suited for anyone who wants a break from the glut of 3D action games out there.

In conclusion, if you have the knack for figuring out common sense problems, like weird Japanese characters with crazy hair or miss the old classic Capcom platformers, rush out and buy Tomba! now. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

Tomba! is certainly a title that can be enjoyed by a wide variety of people. The gameplay is good enough to keep the interest of older people, and the game itself contains enough bright colors and flashing images to keep young children and easily amused older players involved as well. So for anyone who's got their Playstation One sitting around collecting dust, go ahead and pick up Tomba!. I'm sure that you can get it for a good price, and the unique story won't disappoint.

On aurait aimé connaitre davantage notre ami Tombi.

It's easy to see why Tomba has become a game that collectors actively seek out. While it's not particularly engaging, there's no question that it's a unique piece of gaming history that demonstrated what could be done with a tried and true genre. As the years have gone by, we've seen some incredible things done with the platformer, so approaching it for the first time 15 years later makes it hard to appreciate. However, if you've played Tomba in the past and are eager to give it another whirl, you can't go wrong with the PSOne re-release that you can enjoy on the PlayStation 3 at home or on your Vita/PSP to go.

Overall I found Tomba's nonsense more aggravating than endearing. I think President Obama put it best when he said, "Look, I have better things to do than hump flowers and yank on puff balls." Nope, he never said that.
