XboxGame Chronicles (Nov 18, 2005)
I’d probably bring down some serious heat if I were to say Total Overdose is a better game than San Andreas, so I will just say that I had “more fun” playing Total Overdose. There is so much to do that I never felt trapped in the story or in some scripted sequence of events. I was free to explore and hunt down items, perfect my fighting skills and accumulate massive combo strings. But the biggest achievements in Total Overdose is the designers’ ability to fuse what has become a very stereotypical genre with some authentic Mexican flavor, both visual and audio, that on more than one occasion had me convinced I was actually south of the border. It was like going on vacation…only with lots of guns...gun and cars.

Get your luggage together, file a healthy bribe to get your guns through customs, and go bang with the gang. Total Overdose doesn't do much that's new or innovative, but what it does drips with so much style that you can't stay away. I said Mercenaries was the kind of thing Jerry Bruckheimer would produce. If that's the case, then Total Overdose is something out of Robert Rodriguez's studio lots. If you like shooting things and you're sick to death of realism (or GTA, for that matter), come down Mexico way, and get lost in Los Toros. Maybe you'll find that shaker of salt ....

Total Overdose is a game that probably has chosen the best time for release. It's a game that can be picked up and played during a lull period and enjoyed which makes it great to tie you over if you need a new experience until the big hits start arriving next month.

XboxIGN (Sep 26, 2005)
Total Overdose is a very fun, albeit short, action title. There's a whole lot to like within the game's control scheme and the gun battles that it'll allow you to carry out. A plethora of bullets, explosions, bloodied bodies and the like are the norm for the game's fight scenes, almost in a choreographed manner.

XboxGameDaily (Oct 03, 2005)
But at least it's a clone that has a purpose and, not to mention, a fun quotient. Total Overdose: A Gunslinger's Tale In Mexico is very entertaining while it lasts, and has enough style and new moves to learn to keep you playing through time after time. Hell, you may even find yourself just digging around for Day of the Dead and Mexican Wrestler missions all day, just to keep things kooky. Get yourself some fajitas and have a ball.

XboxAceGamez (Oct, 2005)
Total Overdose is a tequila-fuelled, high octane, explosive game that combines frantic gunplay and stylish combo moves with a distinctive and perfectly realised Mexican theme to produce a very entertaining and funny experience. There are plenty of side missions and bonuses to prolong the action, although while it's all tremendous fun, the gameplay is a little shallow and when the novelty wears off, which it will sooner for some than for others, the appeal might fade. This makes Total Overdose perfect for playing in short blasts; it's a game to be prolonged and savoured, rather than rushed through all at once. Do it Mexican style, with plenty of siestas in between, senor!

Total Overdose is a darn good adventure and one that should be taken by every serious gamer. It may not take the place of any Grand Theft Auto game but it could certainly hold its own against Max Payne.

If you are looking for simple gaming fun, then Total Overdose is a pretty good selection to make. You won’t find any online functionality, multiplayer modes, or high-budget voice acting, but you will have fun figuring out how to kill with style. If Cheech and Chong meet El Mariachi sounds good to you, then pick up Total Overdose stat. If you can’t stand the notion of a Mexican shooting range scored on accuracy and presentation, then you may want to hold onto those pesos.

XboxLawrence (Oct 24, 2005)
Total Overdose delivers a somewhat solid action experience, but it's truly the definition of a 'rental game'. Under no circumstances should it be purchased for the full $39.99 MSRP, but it might be worth the Blockbuster rental price for action fans. It may be short (around nine hours), but it delivers enough explosions and shootouts to satisfy hardcore action fans.

PlayStation 2Gaming Target (Jan 12, 2006)
The game's graphics also fall on the side of not very polished. Everything is bland looking buildings, dockyards filled with containers and a farm filled with plain green grass (and pot, lots of pot). For a game with so much style to it's action, it's a little disappointing. The graphics are average. No more, no less. Thankfully, the voice acting is suburb and the wild Mexican-American music is a perfect complement to the non-stop action. It covers all genres, from rock to rap to meringue. Have you ever wasted a goon squad to meringue? It's a trip.

WindowsPC Powerplay (Oct, 2005)

WindowsComputer and Video Games (CVG) (Sep 20, 2005)
As much as Total Overdose wants to distance itself from the GTA canon, the fact that GTA exists means it will always be held up unfavourably in comparison. But on its own merits, TO is brash, energetic, none too taxing and more than capable of providing some solid midtable entertainment, while GTA and the like get on with battling it out at the top of the tree. It's the Tottenham Hotspur of gaming, if you will - always going to be on hand to provide some light-hearted comic relief, but never likely to put up a serious challenge to the bigger boys. While wearing a big novelty sombrero.

PlayStation 2GameZone (Nov 14, 2004)
A Latin-flavored action game with humor and lots of shoot ‘um up action, Total Overdose might not be the best action game available for the PS2 but it’s still mindless good fun nonetheless. While the game is a bit on the linear side and some missions might seem repetitive, there’s action aplenty for those gamers that like their action wild.

So if you're in the mood for an action-filled ride, or want a good weekend rental, Total Overdose: A Gunslinger’s Tale in Mexico is the perfect fit for you. Underneath the flaws there is a great game here just begging to come out. Here's hoping there is a sequel with more development time put into it.

XboxGamingExcellence (May 21, 2006)
I’m going to be perfectly honest about Total Overdose. My beefs are not just with this game alone but with many video games on the market. Almost all the things I don’t like about this game are things I don’t like about a lot of games. It’s actually a pretty fun and addictive game to play. Chances are if you liked playing games like Grand Theft Auto Vice City or San Andreas, then you’ll enjoy this game. But as a gamer I find my expectations for a game are going up. I don’t just want to play another shooter that can compete with the pack. I want to play a shooter that goes above and beyond that pack by making innovations and improvements to the norm. In my opinion this game meets the current standards in some ways and exceeds them in others, but in many ways it’s just an average shooter.

Marketing Guy: I think gamers are gonna eat up the mindless action. However, it you ask me, we need more over-the-top story elements—more crass, edgy stuff to pull in that lucrative junior-high teen crowd.
Developer Dude: Like what?
MG: Throw in some “Burrito Blast” and ‘Gringo Frenzy” combo moves. Or how about some insult-laden dialogue like, “How is it your hair’s greasier than the food?” No need for subtlety here, my friend.
DD: If you don't think people will get it, we can always redo the script. We just need extra time to fix some small bugs, brush up some textures, and polish the physics before shipping the game. Right now, the characters look blocky and cars practically glide down the road.
MG: No chance! We can always patch it later.
DD: Sigh.

Total Overdose came as quite a surprise. Don't buy it expecting the depth of a GTA title or the stunning presentation of an established franchise, and you'll have a great time. Gunplay has rarely been as much fun as it is in Total Overdose, and its over-the-top action from start to finish won me over. If you want a little no-holds-barred, non-stop, exhilarating action, give Total Overdose a try.

The gameplay borrows elements from other successful games, the graphics and sound are more style over substance, but I couldn’t help having a great time while playing this game. Sometimes you don’t need to play a game that is entirely original to have a good time, and sometimes you just want to blow stuff up. If you’re looking for a game that is full of mindless killing with a fun atmosphere, you can’t go wrong with Total Overdose: A Gunslinger’s Tale in Mexico.

Total Overdose is one of those games that presents a conundrum. Most people shouldn't buy it, as it's far too short, too patently ridiculous, and too weak outside of its combat to be worth the money. Conversely, the game's utterly ludicrous nature makes for a fairly entertaining ride at times, and the shooting can be quite fun. Shooter fans on the hunt for something brainless and easy, but with lots of stylish gunplay, should certainly rent Total Overdose just to see how bananas the whole thing is. Those with slightly more-discerning tastes ought to just leave well enough alone and look elsewhere for their needs.

Xbox1UP (Oct 12, 2005)
When it works, Total Overdose is a surreal blur of bullets keeping time to the merengue. But for each of those moments there are an equal number that run together into an indistinguishable mush of gunning down guys in sombreros to Latino rap. And no matter how well done mechanically, no quantity of these can not give this Tin Man the heart it so desperately needs. Without that glue to bring it together as a cohesive new experience of its own, Total Overdose lacks the identity of the games it seeks to emulate. The individual parts are every bit as enjoyable as they were in their own original games, but nothing more.

WindowsGameSpot (Belgium/Netherlands) (Oct 12, 2005)

Steeds had ik zoiets van ‘Been There, Done That’.

Total Overdose is GTA: Mexico with B-level developer talent: The game Robert Rodriguez would have designed if his brain had been replaced by a satsuma: This is Smash TV in sombreros. It provides no-brain thrills but can't hold a candle to "el hombre grande theft auto."

See, Total Overdose is unmistakably game, largely thanks to running around a press release archive with its mouth wide open, and won't exactly win any design awards (although, saying that, Big Mutha Truckers did so who bloody knows), and we probably shouldn't encourage them by buying it, but if you happened to be sitting at home one evening, bored off your tits, and feel like lying on your tummy with a stupid grin splattered across your face, you could probably do worse than to rent it out - even if it is basically that "Kill all the Haitians" line from Vice City done up as an entire game. Totally.

XboxGaming Age (Oct 27, 2005)
All in all, Total Overdose is a game that has quite a bit of unrealized potential. The style aspect of the game is fun, and the simple run and gun missions are enjoyable. However, some technical glitches, horrible enemy AI, a weak plot, and some under whelming gameplay features manage to keep it far from great. On top of all that the game is pretty easy, and won't last the average player more than 3 to 4 days. It's worth a rental, but a far cry from a purchase.
