Replicated and emulated many times, Track & Field has never been convincingly decamped from the top spot in the genre it helped to create. It's a rare case of getting the gaming mechanic pretty much spot on first time (the comparably unfair hammer event excepted) - leaving imitators and sequels to pretty things up, add new events, but ultimately tip their hats to a bona fide arcade classic.
Atari 2600TeleMatch (Aug, 1984)
Atari 2600The Atari Times (Aug 14, 2007)
Despite some sacrifices and a few flaws in it, Track and Field proves to be one of the better Atari 2600 arcade conversions that's available for it. Squeezing a game like that in is a big feat in itself, but they managed to do it nonetheless, complete with the original control scheme that made it popular. Even after all these years, it still remains very challenging.
NESRetro Game Reviews (Sep 08, 2015)
Track and Field is a true test of your gaming skill and although it's fun in single player mode it really shines in the multiplayer environment. Each event is perfectly executed and the game constantly pushes your speed, reactions and accuracy to the limit while still being a complete blast at all times.
NESQuesticle.net (Nov, 2013)
As a whole, Track & Field is fun to play for five minutes or an hour, depending on how deep you want to go. It’s one of the purest mini-game collections on the NES.
Atari 2600The Video Game Critic (Aug 10, 2012)
Track & Field is highly entertaining and even thrilling at times. Difficulty notwithstanding, modern Olympic video games could learn a thing or two from this.
NESNES Archives (Jun 25, 2001)
This game is very common and very cheap. It's a fun game, even if only for a limited time.

So that's Track & Field - untainted by the passing of time, and still as mindlessly entertaining as it was back in the day. Sure, Hyper Sports improved on the formula a little, and Epyx went off and took the idea to dizzy heights not long after that, but in essence this is one of those few occasions when a game concept emerged fully formed from the beginning. For 400 measly points you can't really go wrong with what is undoubtedly one of the finest retro additions to Live Arcade to date.
NESJust Games Retro (Aug 06, 2012)
Overall, the game’s an excellent example of classic NES gameplay. It’s easy to pick up, totally devoid of story, and a “high score” is your primary goal. It’s challenging on its own, a blast with friends, and the kind of addictive arcade gameplay that’s just plain fun. I played some later track and field games leading up to this, and I feel like in their rush to be more complex simulations, they forgot the simplicity that makes this game shine.
NESNES Times (Aug 21, 2008)
So despite coming up slightly short in the 8-bit Olympics, Track & Field is still a decent multi-sports title and succeeds as an arcade port as well. Komani did a commendable job in bringing the arcade classic to the NES and fans of the original will feel at home here. Even though Gold Medal Challenge does offer a better Olympic experience, if you just want simple arcade action on the track, then Track & Field still deserves a spot on your medal podium.
Atari 2600Woodgrain Wonderland (Sep 03, 2018)
Small details push Track & Field over the top. Although figuring out the mechanic can be a temporary struggle, I came to love how the game gives you some control over the angle of your javelin or your long-jumper. Figuring out the connection between speed and angles is the key to success in this game. And unlike so many 2600 games which demand longer-than-usual time commitments, I feel Track & Field is worth it. Although I have to dock the game some points for being so linear, there’s no doubt in my mind that Track & Field is one on-point sports game for the 2600.
NESGamesCollection (Aug 16, 2008)
NESThe Video Game Critic (Jan 22, 2004)
Most events are terrific but the difficult is uneven, and I found games like skeet shoot and high jump to be excessively difficult to qualify for. Another issue is the obvious lack of playing modes, probably due to the game's arcade origins. You basically keep playing events until you fail to qualify, at which time your game ends abruptly. Upon completing a round, you advance to the next with a higher difficulty. Track and Field is a bit simplistic compared to latter day track and field games, but in terms of sheer fun, it's hard to beat.
Commodore 64ASM (Aktueller Software Markt) (Oct, 1987)
NESClassic-games.net (Dec 31, 2018)
Track & Field is a fun little diversion but not one you’ll return to long term. It has a very high pick up and play factor but could have used more content. Than again, seeing how Track & Field II turned out I’m not so sure…
It’s shallow but very fun, with the downside being the uneven difficulty in a couple of events (High Jump and Skeet Shooting stand out). The two-player mode, cute graphics, and hidden easter eggs thrown in make this an enjoyable title, even in small bursts.
NESVideo Games (Jun, 1992)
Commodore 64Zzap! (Jan, 1988)
Playable, but far, far too expensive for what's on offer.
ArcadeAll Game Guide (1998)
In addition to challenging events and pure originality, Track & Field offers nice (if cartoonish) graphics, rich colors, smooth animation and a terrific rendition of the theme from Chariots of Fire. Later models of Track & Field replace the dual buttons with a trackball.
NESDefunct Games (Jul 23, 2012)
All in all this is a game that feels a little too simplistic and repetitive for rewarding solo play but still holds fun and value within its concise two player action. I'd also recommend good quality retro sweatbands, a set of two decent joypad's and do some finger exercises before play ... don't say I didn't warn you!
Commodore 64Power Play (1987)
It’s a simple design that although appears quite dated, can still be fun in short bursts especially with four players on the same system. The game is available for only 400 Microsoft points and if you’re not afraid to lose feeling in your hands, Track & Field gets a recommendation.
