Tumblebugs 2 is a color matching game. Like its predecessor, the objective is to clear moving rows of bugs by matching three or more of the same color. A stationary giant beetle shoots bugs towards the rows.
The player receives extra lives by collecting 25 gold rings or the letters that spell E-X-T-R-A at the top-left of the screen. Power-ups are also available. The ballistics bugs power-up allows aiming at bugs behind the front row. The gap bug makes a wide gap and briefly stops the row from moving. The homing bugs go directly to the nearest bug of their color. The color bug picks up all the bugs matching its color.
Some stages have animal helpers (a frog, a butterfly and a rhino beetle) that collect bugs when nudged.
Besides the standard game, there are two other modes: an endless mode, where the game only ends when all the lives where spent, and a rescue mode, where 27 rounds have to be completed in one hour.
