Tunnel Rats is based on the movie of the same name. The player takes the role of Brooks, an American soldier during the Vietnam war. He is lost in the jungle and needs to fight to survive. As the name suggests the most time is spent in Vietnamese tunnel mazes. Besides the occasional Vietcong the main danger comes from deadly traps. If the player sees them in time he can defuse them by solving a mini game where he needs to press a button in the right timing.

Some sections of the game are set in the jungle which basically reverses the gameplay focus: more shooting, less traps. Most of the story is told in traumatic flashbacks. The handling follows FPS standards with one exception: health is gained back by cutting off the ears from killed enemies. There is no manual saving but a checkpoint system.
