Description

Does not Commute is a top-down racing game with a strategic element. The game is set in a city where a number of cars that accelerate by themselves need to be guided to a destination as quickly as possible one after the other. Each car handles differently and the driver is introduced with a photograph and some background information. A single zone has about fifteen drivers with a time limit that is shared between them. As the car accelerates by itself, the player only needs to tap and hold to steer left or right.

The difficulty is that with each new driver, the previous ones, as driven by the player, remain in the zone and drive their route simultaneously. That way the player has to anticipate the routes of future cars and needs to avoid bumping into the previous ones. Near the end of a zone the environment becomes congested, but cars from previous sessions cannot crash into each other, only the one that is steered actively. To move on to a next zone all cars needs to reach their destination before time runs out.

When a car crashes into another one or the environment, it becomes damaged and valuable time is lost. This can be countered by collecting visible and hidden time pick-ups that provide additional time. There is also a rewind function to start over after crashing badly, but some time goes lost as well. After a while different types of power-ups can be collected and activated, such as a turbo, traction control or amour. Eventually a practice mode becomes available as well.

The game is free-to-play and offers the full game without restrictions or ads. Progress between zones is not saved however and that is the only in-app purchase. Without checkpoint saving, the game needs to be finished in one go without mistakes or it has to be started over from the beginning. It contains a replay mode where previous zones can be watched through different camera perspectives. The game is meant to be played multiple times for the same zones to become faster and find the hidden pick-ups, as the remaining time is carried over to the next zone.
