PlayStationPower Unlimited (Jan, 1996)

There is nothing else like this game! Where else can you throw napalm out of an ice cream truck, smash into Diablos and run over pedestrians. With a choice of 12 vehicles --- all of which vary in armor, weapons, speed and agility --- any gamer, including myself, will never get bored. The control, which is very precise and clean, varies from vehicle to vehicle, as do the endings. Any game with Molotov cocktails, exploding cop cars and napalm ice cream cones has got to be good!
PlayStationGameFan Magazine (Dec, 1995)
The single most important aspect of Twisted Metal is it's original theme. Dashing madly across inner city streets and suburbs, bent on destruction in an ice cream truck, no less, is just the coolest. Rolling up on people's lawns, cutting through parks, leaping into storm drains and pulling into convenience stores is pure genius. You can go anywhere in TM. PS 3-D is where it's at and this game goes there with ample force and deep gameplay.
PlayStationElectric Playground (Nov 10, 1995)
As you can probably tell, Twisted Metal is not a driving game. There is nothing even remotely realistic about the way these vehicles handle. The game is all about action and having what it takes to keep your butt from melting to the vinyl of your seat cover in a fiery explosion.

PlayStationGame Players (Jan, 1996)
There's no doubt that Twisted Metal is one of the best Playstation games available and a great addition to any library, however I would like to have seen longer levels and slightly improved gameplay, I suppose that's what we should expect from the inevitable Twisted Metal 2.
If it'd had link capabilities, it would have been a solid "10". While two-player mode is still fun, it would have been a lot cooler if you and a friend could both partake in the same eight-car seek-and-destroy, battle royale. Undoubtedly, one of this year's top ten games.
PlayStationMega Fun (Dec, 1995)
PlayStationGame Revolution (May 24, 2002)
Once you get the hang of it, Twisted Metal has terrific playability. Even after you've solved it with one vehicle, there are still 11 more to go, so the game doesn't lose all interest after one sitting. There is also the 2 player option where you can duel with your friends.
PlayStationComputer and Video Games (CVG) (Dec, 1995)
The problem here with the graphics is that they're slightly more glitchy than Wipeout or Assault Rigs, as the textures seem to fall off the walls if you get too close. (...) The handling's somewhat let down by the dreadful control set up and there's not an option to well-and-truly create your own configuration. To sum up, Twisted Metal's a very good game though it looks rough compared to the other PlayStation Games mentioned earlier.
PlayStationJust Games Retro (Feb 27, 2012)
The only thing the first Twisted Metal really lacked was expanded multiplayer. While only six levels does make the single player campaign short, the challenge at higher difficulties along with the diverse characters definitely make it worth playing much more than once. Overall, a pretty awesome freshman effort. Later entries in the series would start to stray from the path more than iterate on this one, but the first game is definitely one of my favorite PS1 titles.
PlayStationGamePro (US) (Feb, 1996)
Despite it's flaws, this twisted game is fun. If you can overlook the graphics break-up, take Twisted Metal out for a test drive.
PlayStationVideo Games (Dec, 1995)
PlayStationIGN (Nov 26, 1996)
The game's only downfall is that it's just too short. The game can be completed in just a couple of hours. However, the two-player split-screen combat mode more than makes up for the one-player mode's lack of length. Over all, a solid game.
PlayStationDefunct Games (Dec 22, 2016)
The original Twisted Metal does hold up from a gameplay standpoint. It's still fun even 20 years later. However, most of what it does was improved upon in the sequels, especially Twisted Metal 2: World Tour and Twisted Metal: Black on the PS2. It can still be a fun game for Christmas family gatherings. Nothing says the season of joy like a creepy-looking ice cream truck shooting napalm, am I right?
PlayStationSuper Power (Sweden) (Feb, 1996)
PlayStationThe Video Game Critic (Jul 27, 2000)
But the biggest problem with Twisted Metal is its frame-rate. Even in the single player mode, the choppiness makes it difficult to maintain control. The control scheme is well-designed, and the head-banging music is not bad. Audio effects include a distinctive signature sound for each vehicle - so you'll know who hit you. Twisted Metal was a truly innovative title that begat a long, popular series.
