It's fast, exhilarating fun, but, though popular, it's not the best plane shoot-'em-up around by a long chalk. If vertical shoot-'em-ups are your bag then perhaps you'll like it, but personally I'm not convinced by overhead-view flight games. I'd rather spend my money on the brilliant G-Loc any day.

As I’ve said, Vapor Trail isn’t the most original or best-designed shooter I’ve played....but it is a decent little game to mess around with from time to time and every once in a while, it even pulls out a nice little surprise. When When a boss is near death, a voice gives the order to “go in for the kill” (or maybe “the core”....like I mentioned earlier, the voices in this game aren’t the best). I have to admit, hearing the game tell me I’m on the verge of taking down a tough foe is pretty adrenalizing. Vapor Trail might not get everything right, but it did enough to give me a fun evening of gaming.

Vapor Trail just has a few things that are semi-irritating that keep it from being an outstanding game. There just really isn't anything that comes forth that makes this game any better (or different for that matter) than the best of the shooters the Genesis has to offer. When you come down to it, this is still just another shooter to add to the library, just because of that missing "it" factor to propel it into elite territory. I still say that even with the lack of the "it" factor, this is one of the best fighter plane shooters available, but Fireshark and Thunder Force II are also great games as well. And with a subtitle like "Hyper Offence Formation," how can you go wrong?
ArcadePower Play (Mar, 1990)

In terms of audio, Vapor Trail boasts some seriously kick-ass music that conveys a true sense of urgency. The voice synthesis, on the other hand, is so awful you could mistake it for Donald Duck complaining about a bee in his picnic basket. It's so heinous that you actually want to hear it, just so you can make fun of it. Vapor Trail also includes a two-player simultaneous mode, albeit with some minor slowdown. My main beef with this game is how your score immediately disappears upon losing your last life! Yes, even during the "continue" countdown! Unless you're paying very close attention, you never know what the high score is, which hurts the game's replay value. It's too bad, because otherwise Vapor Trail ranks quite high in the crowded pool of Genesis shooters.

Straight from the arcade we get Vapor Trail. Not the best game before and not the best now, but for a shooter this title does give a decent thrill. The action is heavy through most of the conflict, but the whole package just doesn't last long enough to earn it a higher review.

In the end, it was my son that made me see the light. (I told you he would redeem himself.) During one of my many death spirals -- I can't hold it! -- he said this to me, without looking up: Those sound effects are so annoying. Do you like that game? Me: No, not really. Him: Do you have to play the game? And like an epiphany: No son. No, I don't.
