VIDEOBALL is a top-down action game that draws inspiration from sports such as basketball, American football, European football, but also air hockey. It is played in a single-screen environment where two to six players, either with AI opponents, or local or online human players, play against each other in two teams. Each player controls a triangle that can freely move around the entire rectangular arena. The goal is to score by getting a ball to the opponent's far end, a zone marked in a colour, to score a touchdown.

There are different mechanics to take into account. The triangles cannot touch the ball directly as this stuns them temporarily. Next to movement only one other action is available: shooting. Shooting launches a triangle that can push the ball in a certain direction or stuns an opponent. By holding and charging a bit longer, this shot can be made more powerful. Charging until the count of three makes it even stronger. Finally, charging to the maximum amount of time introduces a defensive square on the field that bounces back the ball and stops shots. It remains on the field until it is shot and removed. Shots of different teams can neutralize each other.

The game can be customized in various ways with announcers, colours, backgrounds and music. There are exhibition and ranked matches, global leaderboards and different options for matches, for instance to determine the score or time limit, and the amount of balls on the field.
