Rarely do I sit down to play a game, finish it and instantly start a new playthrough; this is one of those games. Westerado is a great package with lots of replayability and can easily be recommended for fans of westerns or revenge flicks. No other experience that I've played has done revenge so well. If you've been hankerin' for a trip to the wild west saddle up and hang onto your hat, Westerado: Double Barreled is a dern tootin' good time.
Westerado: Double Barreled mixes the retro style of westerns like Gun.Smoke with the adventure mechanics seen in Legend of Zelda, and throws in the no holds barred attitude of “do what you like” games of today for good measure – and it works beautifully. If you’ve been looking for a good game that takes place in the West on your PC, you need look no further. You’ll be shooting faces and taking hats in no time, and you’ll love it.
Westerado manages to combine the good, the bad, and the ugly in one spectacular game that provides depth and entertainment in a small package rivaling even the major A list developers. The only downside is that it is very short, but it's one of the best games I have played so far this year. Westerado is a rare breed of game that reaches into your inner child and brings the Wild West to life.
Westerado: Double Barreled is a title that is quite unique and has some great personality. This title is an easy pick up and go game. If you like games that have mystery, witty banter and exploration/action this game is for you and I highly recommend checking it out.
Otherwise, Westerado is fun, a humorous and violent detective tale in the Old West. It's well written, the pixel art and animation are nicely done, and the fact that you can draw your gun whenever you want, and that you can shoot key characters dead and just keep on playing, gives it a great sense of freedom.
Westerado is a slavishly faithful sendup to a beloved era of cinema with a sizeable chunk of player agency along for the ride. It packs all the moral choice and open decision of a modern adventure game, only without the heavy hand of right or wrong to guide your way. You play to win, sure, but not to satisfy any sort of arbitrary condition. You can shoot first and ask later, or shoot and never ask, or ask and maybe never shoot. It doesn't matter and simultaneously matters a great deal, which is just about all you can ask for in Westerado's driving constant; it's a lawless tale in an open medium. All that's left is to take the reins and see where it can go.
Westerado is a unique case of a retro-inspired game with the depth of something modern. Dialogue, combat, and the story are all free to explore in several ways, from pacifistic runs to trigger-happy bloodbaths with plenty more in between. The game's early era mechanics will be a joy to nostalgically-driven gamers while also making enough concessions to contemporary players that remove most (but not all) frustrations. If you don't mind the pixelized art and a few gripes that come with it, it's well worth it to saddle up for Westerado.
But even with these issues, Westerado: Double Barreled is still a delight to explore, a surprising Western-themed playground full of unexpected events and exciting shenanigans. And if you give it some time and let it into your heart, you’ll find a game worth exploring again and again.
