Sean Velasco of Yacht Club Games said it best “Shovel Knight is the game you saw in your mind as a kid as opposed to the one that was actually on your screen”. What I truly love about this game is the fact that it is the perfect NES experience without the limited lives, backward controls, cheap deaths and long passwords that hindered hundreds of platformers from our past. Shovel Knight is truly the beginning of a new age of gaming and it is a complete mastery of the genre in every sense of the word.

If you are a fan of any NES game or more specifically NES Action/Adventure game, this is the best one you will ever play. If you own a Wii U, you must pick this game up. I think Yacht Club Games might secretly be employees of Nintendo under another name because this game screams with quality and polish that are mostly only found in Nintendo games. This is by far my favorite indie game I’ve played since Steamworld Dig and in my top 3 overall games I’ve played so far this year. I can not wait to see what Yacht Club has up their sleeves for their next title.

Yet, Shovel Knight is its own. References to the classics are there, but they are never in your face, and they are never so prevalent that what was great about games of the past overwrites what is great about the game you're playing right now. Its world is wonderful, its levels challenging, and its humor genuine, but, in the end, what's most surprising is the game's emotional core. Shovel Knight's quest is to liberate his sister in arms, Shield Knight--sort of a Proto Man for the Shovel generation. In dreams he watches her fall, compelled by that blocky text to "--Catch Her--" while infinite enemies spawn and harass him. These quiet, subtle moments between levels rife with chunky block puzzles and pingy music display the heart of Shovel Knight, a game whose phenomenal passion for the old mixes perfectly with its drive to create something new.

If games like this continue to be the product of Kickstarter projects, it is going to become the haven of indie games. With fun visuals and a great soundtrack this game bridges the gap between old-school and modern sensibilities and offers up an awesomely entertaining experience in the process.

Yacht Club Games has a hit on its hands with Shovel Knight. With brilliant game design, charming presentation and a ton of content, this is a wonderful first title from the fledgling developer. It will only get better with post-release content, and if Shovel Knight becomes the hit it deserves to be, gamers will hopefully be seeing much more of Yacht Club Games — and its plucky mascot — in the coming months and years.

There are a few little things I’d definitely like changed (Fully customizable controls, for one; the Wii U Tablet has eight main buttons, let me use more than three of them. Let me use L and R to shift through my abilities) but ultimately Shovel Knight’s just a pure, fun experience. I hope it gets a sequel that smooths out some of the rough spots, because while it’s very good and stands well above its peers, it’s still got enough bits that I think could be improved. And I still really would like to see a hand-drawn version of the game.
Giant Bomb (Jun 26, 2014)
My questions about the game's difficulty wouldn't matter if were talking about a lesser game, though. I simply wanted to love Shovel Knight even more than I already do. Shovel Knight is an exceptionally well-made action platformer, one worthy of being celebrated far beyond the nostalgic foundation it's built upon. Shovel Knight won't be the last old school game made in the modern age, but it's unlikely many others will be as much fun.
Shovel Knight will easily strike a nostalgic chord with any gamer who remembers the days before high-definition graphics, surround sound, and cinematic story lines. Younger players may not relate to the dated visuals, but the fun factor, gameplay, and sense of accomplishment after beating a difficult level are timeless qualities for everyone.
Shovel Knight may go out of its way to feel like a relic from a bygone era, but the developers at Yacht Club Games were selective when determining which old conventions to revive. They cast aside most of the chaff and focused only on tasty wheat, minus the gluten. The result is a tightly constructed game that I would be quite pleased to see serve as the start of a new franchise. If any of what I've described sounds like something you might like, you owe it to yourself to take a look.
