Sharkberg (Sep 18, 2015)
If you liked 3D Land, World offers everything it did plus much more, and in a massively more balanced and attractive package. 3D World’s style, stage design, and difficulty curve are all much nicer than 3D Land’s, and it’s far more inventive than the New Super Mario Bros series. Fans hoping for something bigger and more open in the vein of Mario Galaxy may be disappointed, but for my personal tastes, 3D World is the finest 3D Mario title to be released. It’s funny to think that my all time favorite 2D and 3D Mario titles share the same character types and abilities! Maybe someday we’ll get a follow up feature the long awaited return of the monstrous frog-king Wart.
FNintendo (Nov 19, 2013)
Nintendojo (Dec 02, 2013)
With roughly 30-35 hours of gameplay, there’s a lot to experience and love in 3D World. It’s fun, it’s gorgeous, and easily one of the best games on the stands. Mario’s longevity puts Lazarus to shame, as the plumber’s latest game is as fresh and timeless as any of the classics before it. I haven’t even touched on everything the game has to offer! Year of Luigi references, Luigi Bros., Plessie, Bullies, Kuribo’s Ice Skate, the return of Chargin’ Chuck, and a smorgasbord of other things that a review just can’t do justice to. There are Super Mario World Goombas in the game, for crying out loud! There’s only one, last bit of praise I can offer the game that fans of Super Mario Galaxy 2 will appreciate: Grand Master Galaxy officially has competition. Go buy the game, folks. It’s a masterpiece.
Cubed3 (Nov 25, 2013)
Super Mario 3D World is a superb first attempt at a 3D Super Mario Bros. platformer from Nintendo. It's more than just a simple Mario title with multiplayer bolted on. The game weaves together a plethora of unique, compelling and occasionally downright bizarre ideas that simply work. Mario and friends run, jump, float, crawl, climb, throw fireballs and explode cannonballs across multiple worlds of charming designs, experimental ideas and rock hard platforming towards the end. Super Mario 3D World is one of the best titles on the Nintendo Wii U and one of the best platformers, period. Go forth and save the Sprixie Kingdom!
Engadget (Nov 19, 2013)
Put simply, Super Mario 3D World is stunning. Its world is beautiful, its design is impeccable, and its fun is infectious. I'm running out of superlatives here, so let me finish where I started: Go play it.
Giant Bomb (Nov 20, 2013)
Suffice it to say, World continues to make the case that it's possible to reinvent a classic over and over again. World might not be the same revelation that Super Mario 64 or Super Mario Galaxy were, but it doesn't look at traditions as a crutch, and instead uses what you know as a way to delight and entertain.
Gaming Age (Nov 25, 2013)
I’ve enjoyed every moment spent with Super Mario 3D World and plan to spend more time with it thanks to additional content unveiled upon completion. It is, without a doubt, the best game you can own for the Wii U, and quite possibly the best game you’ll play all year. It’s hard to imagine that in one week we’ve seen two GOTY contenders from Nintendo with this and Zelda, but I’m certainly not complaining. Super Mario 3D World is a master class in platforming fun, and deserves every bit of praise heaped upon it.
Snackbar-Games.com (Dec 03, 2013)
There’s a lot to sink your claws into in Super Mario 3D World, and the collection of levels contains very few misses. If you’ve been holding out on a Wii U purchase until it had an exclusive that was recommended without caveats, now may be that time, and if you already own the system, 3D World will make sure you don’t regret it.
Darkstation (Nov 19, 2013)
Super Mario 3D World is both gorgeous and about as enjoyable as a video game can be. There is an immense amount of depth that kept me coming back for more, time and time again. This is the rare type of game that I believe ten years down the road we will be coming back and playing again and again. It’s that good. For all those worried that the Wii U was going to fall into some dark oblivion, fret not, your savior is here and its Super Mario 3D World one of the best platformers ever made.
Anime News Network (Nov 19, 2013)
But compared to the strength of the rest of the package, these complaints seem like trifles. The sheer, giddy joy of dashing through clouds while pocketing hundreds of coins, of riding a sea monster through raging rapids, of chasing down a running Koopa train and stomping all the critters onboard – is more than enough to warrant a recommendation. We're surrounded right now by next-gen games trying to trick us into thinking that shiny new tech alone is a substitute for fun, engaging, and creative game design. It's nice that there are games like Super Mario 3D World that make us realize the folly of that school of thought.
Destructoid (Nov 19, 2013)
There was a moment where I was taking in the beautiful soundtrack, hovering over a tricky jump as cat Peach, and watching the glistening water below where the game really came together. It was then that I realized that Super Mario 3D World had achieved a level of platforming design that's close to perfection, and there was almost never a moment where I didn't have a smile on my face. This is the unequivocally the best Mario game since Galaxy 2, and it shows up anything the "New" series has ever done, and then some.
NintendoWorldReport (Nov 19, 2013)
Thankfully 3D World isn’t just a refinement of the Mario formula, it’s a powerful re-imagining. It’s an explosive cavalcade of color and excitement as well as a well thought out evolution of Mario. The plot even deviates (although not too wildly) from what you might expect in a Mario game, giving you some silly surprises amidst the parade of unlockable content. This is one Mario game you’ll want to play well after the credits roll and might just be the killer app of the Wii U. Not since Super Mario World have I been so in love with a Mario game.
The Guardian (Nov 19, 2013)
To some, Super Mario may appear tired: a mascot whom Nintendo trots out every few years to sell another console with repackaged but fundamentally stale ideas. Super Mario 3D World is a fierce rebuttal to the accusation. Mario and his makers once again assert their dominance of spatial navigation games, displaying a rude abundance of ideas to delight, surprise and celebrate innocence and playfulness.
ZTGameDomain (Nov 20, 2013)
Super Mario 3D World justifies a Wii U. It is rare these days that there is one game to make a console worthy of purchase, but I cannot express how much pure fun I had with this title. If you own a Wii U it is a no-brainer, you should own this game. If you don’t own one, but have considered buying one, this is the game that makes it all worthwhile. However you do it, find a way to play this game. It is the poster child for why we fell in love with this hobby in the first place, and for me, the best Mario game since 64 stole my childhood.
Impulse Gamer (Dec 08, 2013)
Super Mario 3D World is one of the best Super Mario games (even better than Galaxy 2) to date and not only modernises the franchise but pays homage to what came before. It’s fun, it’s fast and it’s the best multiplayer experience on the Wii U. I thoroughly enjoyed this game from start to finish and I will be returning again.
Gamestyle (Jan 15, 2014)
A mastery of games design, Super Mario 3D World shows that Nintendo are still on top of their game. Blending the old and the new into platforming gold, this is everything we could’ve wanted and more. The reason to own a Wii U has arrived.
Nintendo Life (Nov 19, 2013)
This is a definitive 3D Mario experience, successfully finding a middle-ground between the iconic Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy. You may not swing Bowser by his tail or run upside down, but it’s bursting with creativity nonetheless, while delivering on the craft and skill that defines the Tokyo EAD studio. It’s unmissable.
Co-Optimus (Dec 04, 2013)
Super Mario 3D World is the finest Mario game since Super Mario Galaxy, and in my opinion, is the best major release of the fall season. While Nintendo still has a little more honing to do on the co-op play, it's getting a lot more fun. If you have a WiiU, you absolutely should not pass this game up.
Gamereactor (Sweden) (Nov 19, 2013)
Verkligen magiskt Nintendo.
Super Mario 3D World is yet another brilliant entry in Nintendo's long-running Mario franchise. The free-to-roam -- yet still short and linear -- worlds are a pleasure to explore, luring players to search for the countless secret areas, power-ups, coins, and stars scattered around them. Also, the new cat and clone power-ups -- which join classics including Fire Flowers, Mega Mushrooms, Boomerang Flowers, and the Super Leaf (which outfits Mario and his friends in Racoon suits) -- are fine additions that create a new dimension to gameplay. Equally enjoyable to play alone and in groups, in quick 10-minute bursts as well as afternoon-long marathons, Super Mario 3D World is the must-own Wii U game of 2013.
Anyway, that’s actually a very minor flaw, and it had only minimal impact on my overall enjoyment with the enormously varied adventure that is Super Mario 3D World. If you’ve been looking for the Mario game that finally rekindles the old magic, you absolutely owe it to yourself to check out this new masterpiece. I have a feeling it will delight a whole new generation of platformer fans in almost exactly the same way Super Mario Bros. 3 once delighted me. I’m quite confident calling it the least extraneous Mario romp of the last two decades

The Video Game Critic (Dec 06, 2013)
Super Mario 3D World was a long time coming, but it's the gift that keeps on giving. Frankly, this is the kind of high-quality, family-friendly title only Nintendo could deliver.
Gamegravy (Mar 09, 2014)
I will sum this up as simple as I can. Go buy this game and enjoy, it is a must have in every collection.
Tech-Gaming (Nov 28, 2013)
In 1981, Shigeru Miyamoto popularized the platformer with Donkey Kong. Thirty-two years later, he’s still innovating, as demonstrated by Super Mario 3D World- one of the most jubilant and enjoyable games in the genre’s history.
NZGamer (Dec 10, 2013)
The game is breathtakingly simple, polished to perfection, and tonnes of fun - by yourself or with friends. The only reason it’s not getting a perfect 10 is because I miss the story elements, and some of the bosses were just far too easy to overcome. But that aside, it’s worthy of wearing of the beloved red cap, and proof that while Nintendo's box may not match the horsepower of the other two new consoles, the famous Japanese company still has some valuable lessons to teach about how to ensnare and enrapture a target audience for many, many years to come.
Retro Gamer (Dec 03, 2013)
Loads to discover, plenty of clever gameplay mechanics and amazing level design make this an essential platformer that's worth owning a Wii U for.
Game Freaks 365 (Nov 23, 2013)
Mario remains the pioneer for platformers nearly thirty years running. Whether you play Super Mario 3D World alone or with three other friends it is a blast. It serves fans in a way that you can only expect from a Nintendo title. While it may not utilize the GamePad particularly well, it does a fantastic job showing off the Wii U's graphical horsepower. I'm a believer in this system now. That's not something that I could have said a few months ago. Super Mario 3D World makes all the difference.
GamesReviews (Jan 08, 2014)
It would be unfair to say the Wii U isn’t the home of some decent titles, and Super Mario 3D World would be comfortable at the very top of that list. It’s an excellent game, with only a few small issues that might annoy those easily distracted, or with young children.
videogamer.fr (Dec, 2013)
Digital Chumps (Nov 19, 2013)
Super Mario 3D World isn’t Super Mario Galaxy or New Super Mario Bros.; it’s a little bit of both. Under a thick layer of polish and charm, you’ll find yet another top-notch platforming adventure, chocked full of secrets and clever twists and about as challenging as anything Mario has thrown our way thus far. It isn’t groundbreaking or approaching the level of perfection that the Galaxy games did, but if nothing else, it’s a must-have title for Wii U owners, and probably enough to push you over the edge if you’re waiting to buy a system and harbor an appreciation for Nintendo’s platforming contributions.
Games TM (Dec 05, 2013)
If there's anyone out there who's getting into Mario for the first time with the Wii U, this is a great example of an alternative kind of game to New Super Mario Bros. U. For the rest of us, Super Mario 3D World might not be a "game changer" like Super Mario 64, but it'll always be remembered as the one that let the cats out.
Gameplay (Benelux) (Nov 27, 2013)
TechRaptor (Dec 14, 2013)
While the game is devoid of Yoshi, it’s full of plenty of other benefits. The HD graphics are beautiful and the music is more mature than previous games in the series (wait for the Ghost Houses!) so while the game’s plot line may not be anything revolutionary, it is totally worth the price tag – it’ll keep you playing for quite some time and continue throwing curve-balls at you throughout the experience. I give it a solid 4.5 out of 5, with points lost purely for game camera mechanics and multiplayer frustration.
GamesRadar (Nov 19, 2013)
3D World sees the plumber at the top of his game, and it’s finally as fun to play with friends as it is solo. It doesn’t redefine the franchise like previous entries have, but when the total package is as fun as 3D World, that’s hardly a complaint.
USgamer (Nov 19, 2013)
A spot-on exploration of what Nintendo really does best: Create varied and surprising twists on concepts and ingredients you thought you knew inside-out. The fact that 3D World remains lively and interesting despite calling back to so many well-loved classics serves as a succinct reminder as to why Mario remains successful after so many years and so many games: At its heart, the series is ultimately just about having simple, unpretentious fun.
Polygon (Oct 19, 2013)
Super Mario 3D World doesn't reinvent the Mario formula. But it is in every way its own game, with a bright, joyful aesthetic that's supported by inspired level design and a cast that matters. It gets the balance right between nostalgic touches and clever new twists, and never once let me down with a boring boss or too-familiar retread. In all my years of playing with the Mario gang, I've never been quite so happy to hurl myself into the unknown, and 3D World delivers challenge, surprise and joy in almost every moment.
Random Access (Nov 19, 2016)
Despite a few flaws — its gimmickry could have been toned down a bit in favour of simply creating unique challenges — Super Mario 3D World is an absolute treat for Nintendo fans. And believe me, it offers enough depth and challenge to keep players going on it for a long while. This is no "finished in two hours" kind of game; this is a Mario title that'll keep you on your toes for a long period of time. Better keep that Wii U GamePad charged, because you're going to be hooked on this for a long while.
Gamer.nl (Nov 19, 2013)
New Game Network (Dec 03, 2013)
Better than 3D Land and the New Super Mario Bros series, but doesn't quite reach the dizzying heights of Super Mario Galaxy.
Nivelul2 (May 14, 2014)
Game Critics (Feb 19, 2014)
I'm sure some players will get a kick out of throwing each other into pits or causing chaos in a cat suit, but 3D World stands squarely in the shadow of other, greater entries in the series. I'll be happy to return to the franchise when a brighter light bulb goes off in the Nintendo development studio at some point in the future, but if the next few entries are as content to coast as this one, I won't feel bad about skipping them at all.
Quarter to Three (Jan 01, 2014)
I can respect and sometimes admire what Nintendo is doing, and they sure do it well. There are some gratifying moments in here. But like videogaming itself, I’ve moved on.
Kotaku (Nov 22, 2013)
SM3DW is a fantastic game. Just...fun, from beginning to "end". I had a smile on my face almost the entire time. It's packed with charm from front to back, contains some memorable levels and provides seamless multiplayer fun. If you own a Wii U, congratulations, your wait for a truly special game for the system is over.
