In conclusion Marvel Super Hero Squad is a fun kid's game that doesn't try to rewrite the genre but creates an interesting attempt at another market which THQ should be thanked for because not all gamers are in their 20's and beyond. It's cute, it's fun and it's clobbering time!

Worth Playing (Nov 04, 2009)
It's a shame, too, because Blue Tongue has already proven that it can make a very entertaining Wii game with de Blob, so I was hopeful that the developers could work their magic again and make a kid-oriented superhero game that's worth the disc on which it was printed. The curse of the licensed product strikes again, though, and instead of a diamond in the rough, we're left with another mediocre Wii game that will take up space on shelves and trick a few unsuspecting parents into buying a "cool" game for their kids. While younger gamers who love the show might be entertained by the game for a few hours, it will likely prove to be too frustrating, too boring and too bad for them to devote any real time to it. Save your money and get the kids a bike instead. They could use the exercise anyway, right?

Marvel Super Hero Squad does not build bridges as far as game concept; however, it does give a younger audience the chance to play as some of their favorite heroes and villains without the often adult-themed story elements of other superhero games. Simplistic combat and an accessible storyline will entertain them well beyond the initial glory of their favorites in a game just for them. Even as an adult who disliked the idea of the show itself, I easily found myself enjoying the game for its simplicity. Issues aside, this is a game that should be on every young heroes Christmas list as well as a few Super Hero Squad action figures.

Ultimately, though, all that really matters here is if you like the idea of a very simple, kid-oriented brawler featuring cute versions of Marvel characters. The rest of the game falls in line adequately.

IGN (Oct 20, 2009)
Super Hero Squad seems to have everything going for it but the gameplay, and in the end that’s the content that’ll make or break the experience for younger gamers. Those devoted to the show or that collect the toys will have a decent time pushing through the game’s multiple modes. Younger players will need some hand-holding though. It’s a decent brawler, but it lacks that final coat of polish.

GameSpot (Oct 30, 2009)
Marvel Super Hero Squad never comes close to capturing the thrill of superpowered crime fighting. As you walk down nondescript corridors and through unimaginative evil lairs, repeatedly slamming on the punch button as wave after wave of faceless robots attack you, you'll wonder how such an exciting concept could have been squandered so spectacularly. The ridiculous story isn't nearly entertaining enough to compensate for the monotonous combat, and the simple Battle mode is too imbalanced to provide a good outlet for superpowered rage. Stay far away from this superhero snore fest.

There are many, many great kids games out there, including those with powerful licenses attached. Just look at The Secret Saturdays: Beasts of the 5th Sun or the recent Ice Age game. Marvel Super Hero Squad, however, should be avoided.

Nintendojo (2009)
The game has a decent amount of polish, both graphically and aurally (albeit in a campy sort of way), but that serves as little help for a game that is shallow and irritating. The absence of RPG-style character progression or purchasable extras is particularly missed, and it is not something one can chalk up to the game’s young audience; the vast majority of kid-themed action adventure games today use at least some form of character growth, or at least (as in the case of the LEGO games) a means to buy new characters and abilities. With none of that in the mix here, Marvel Super Hero Squad quickly degenerates into a forgettable shadow of other, better superhero games, further handcuffed by frustratingly long gaps between saves and camera aggravations. Those looking for a hero fix can find plenty of superior alternatives elsewhere.

Video Game Generation (Nov 16, 2011)
This is a company I grew up on, and which I find upon reflection left some impact on my childhood upbringing and the development of my adult viewpoints and approach to life. Amid all the superheroic mayhem, big issues were addressed. Metaphysical and existential subject matter were touched on. Readers were taught to question authority and be vigilant against the enemies of personal and collective liberty, intelligence and rationality, and reminded of the primacy and importance of protecting free will and the rights of the individual and our place in the various sociological groups to which we belong. Now all that same company has to offer are moronic, regressive and retrogressive right wing politics, simplistic, pro-miliitary solutions and awful TV-level scripts. What the hell ever happened to Stan’s soapbox and social consciousness?
