Atomic Gamer (Sep 13, 2010)
It’s hard to completely fault the developers for their flaws because they’ve clearly made some admirably bold decisions to evolve a franchise that’s near and dear to so many. And while it falls a bit short, Other M works as both a Metroid game and Wii title that should please old school fans, while attracting newcomers to a series that deserves a mainstream audience. It doesn’t knock Super Metroid from the top spot, but it does bring the series back to a place I felt was somewhat neglected in the previous Prime titles. It also lays a fantastic framework for an even better sequel that I hope Nintendo and Team Ninja are hard at work creating.

GameSpot (Aug 27, 2010)
It should take around 12 hours to play through Other M, which is a fine length for an action-focused game. But because the combat is so thrilling, and it's so rewarding to search for every item along the way, the ending pops up all too soon. You'll likely be left wanting more of this exciting adventure, a testament to the invigorating quality of the smoothly executed shift in focus. People expecting Other M to conform to the elements that made Super Metroid and Metroid Prime classics may be disappointed at first, but stick with it. This is another great entry in the series, and a refreshing change of pace for the well-traveled bounty hunter.
GameZone (Sep 09, 2010)
Other M is a great entry in Nintendo’s long-running sci-fi franchise. It tweaks some of the gameplay elements that have become staples of the series, but it still manages to feel like a Metroid game. The storytelling is beautiful and cinematic, and the gameplay is enthralling and wonderfully crafted. Unfortunately, the game’s short length really takes away from what could have been an outstanding title. Despite that minor setback, though, Metroid: Other M is a solid Wii game worth playing whether you’ve played a Metroid game in the past or not.
IGN (Aug 27, 2010)
Metroid: Other M is a huge step forward for Nintendo, a company that’s been reluctant to push story over gameplay. It’s certainly possible that what the Other M team did for Metroid could potentially shape the direction of other Nintendo franchises, but for now this is a great first step. Many of the issues in Metroid: Other M could have been addressed with the inclusion of nunchuck control, so I’m not entirely sold on the idea that single Wii remote control was the best thing for this game. But in the end, this is still an excellent experience with great, intense action and an engaging story that turns one of Nintendo’s beloved characters into something more than a kick-ass bounty hunter.
ZTGameDomain (Sep, 2010)
Metroid: Other M is easily one of Nintendo's finest additions to the Wii library. Team Ninja has done an outstanding job of capturing the feel of the series, while adding their own flavor to the mix. Finally getting to hear Samus was an experience in and of itself. Learning the back story, even if it is a bit wordy and unoriginal, was more than worth the price of admission for this Metroid fan. If you are even the slightest fan of the series this is a no-brainer. Other M is a fantastic palette for a brand new era in the franchise.
Retro Gamer (Oct, 2010)
It's certainly not without its issues. but Metroid: Other M remains an impressive achievement that's only let down by its superfluous cut-scenes and occasionally frustrating controls.
DS-x2 (Sep, 2010)
Despite some nagging flaws, primarily in the gameplay and longevity departments, Metroid: Other M is still a fantastic game, so long as you take it for what it is. It's a strong story driven title with fantastic production values which manages to retain the essential Metroid gameplay we know and love. Shifting the spotlight to focus on the narrative more than the action is a daring move but one that has not only granted Samus a voice but also the franchise with which it can tell a compelling story from now on. It doesn't quite match up to its predecessors but Metroid: Other M is still a worthy entry in the franchise.
Game Revolution (Aug 30, 2010)
As a new entry in an established series, taking some bold steps in a bunch of new directions, Metroid: Other M is a resounding success. There are some small issues that prevent it from being up there with Super Metroid and Metroid Prime, but they're just annoyances rather than anything serious. Other than a lack of choice with the controls and a little heavy-handedness in the presentation and direction, Metroid: Other M superbly creates a familiar-feeling Metroid experience that really isn't that familiar at all. And don't worry, your thumb will forgive you someday.
83 (Sep 24, 2010)
In the end Metroid: Other M is a succeeded experiment. We lose some of the unique atmosphere but in return get better and most of all more spectacular combat. The gameplay is solid and the adventure grabs you from start to finish. For the fans of the series there's a Samus that looks sexier than ever and you can still have fun searching for hidden gear, even if that doesn't go along anymore with a feeling of lonelyness throughout the story and the characters in it. Kudos to Nintendo and Team Ninja for taking a risk and again making the choice for innovation with such an important franchise!
Extreme Gamer (Aug 31, 2010)
Metroid: Other M might not be exactly how you expected the Metroid series to evolve, but by no means does that mean Metroid’s new direction of a more story-driven action shooter isn’t the way to go. Initially it might be a little too sappy for some, but once Samus gets rolling her melancholy shadow starts to drift away. Saved by a quick paced combat system, some thrilling boss battles and the intricately designed Bottle Ship, Metroid: Other M comes out on top. This isn’t quite the jump like Prime was, but it is still a Metroid game that all fans should check out. Lastly, if you haven’t played a Metroid title in the past, Metroid: Other M is a great place to start as it offers the most insight the character of Samus while being firmly rooted in the fast paced shooting action that started it all.

Giant Bomb (Aug 27, 2010)
Samus Aran's transition to fast-paced third-person action is mostly a smooth one.
80 (UK) (Aug 27, 2010)
These are pretty minor gripes, however, particularly when you're in the presence of a character that always expresses herself best through her moves rather than her speech, and the occasional fumbling by Team Ninja can't take away from its otherwise astonishing achievement. Guess what? The unlikeliest of developers has created a game that manages to encapsulate huge chunks of the series' traditions, even as it pushes it onwards in a slick new direction. Metroid has spliced its genes once again, and the results are typically fascinating.
Retroage (Sep 17, 2010)
Życzyłbym sobie i wszystkim fanom Metroida, żeby twórcy bardziej postarali się o projekty plansz i stworów, lepszą muzykę i przede wszystkim większy świat. Metroid: Other M to naprawdę dobra odsłona genialnej serii, bardzo filmowa, kompletnie inna niż wszystkie poprzednie.
God is a Geek (Sep 07, 2010)
Other M has taken significant risks in trying to portray Samus in a different light, as well as going back to basics with its approach on NES style controls and feel of the first Metroid. There is much to praise in Other M in terms of production values, core gameplay mechanics and controls, even if they are a bit alien at first. The lion’s share of criticism will probably be aimed at the choice of giving our precious Samus a personal history and voice, but that’s merely a personal preference. Overall, Other M is an entertaining title which fans of the Metroid series and newcomers should enjoy.
Cheat Happens (Aug 31, 2010)
I'm sure the core Metroid fans aren't going to want to hear this, but the series was due for a refresh and besides a few missteps, Other M is definitely it. It offers enough changes to the long running series without completely rewriting the book. Metroid: Other M is a Metroid for a new generation, but it's loyal enough that even the most hardcore fans will appreciate it.
Factornews (Oct 19, 2010)
80 (Sep 17, 2010)
The third person sections in Other M are great. While the first person sections can suffer due to aiming when moving the Wii Remote, it doesn’t hinder the game any. Another thing that may annoy Metroid fans is having Adam authorize the use of weapons. But, when you think of it like trying to find the weapons in other Metroid games, it’s about the same thing. Overall, Metroid fans should definitely pick this game up to see the continuation after Super Metroid. Wii owners ought to check this out as well for a solid Wii title that’s a lot of fun to play.
80 (Sep 17, 2010)
In the end, Metroid: Other M is one of Nintendo’s most ambitious projects this generation and deserves some consideration for all that it gets right despite a few missteps. It’s recommended for Metroid fans, particularly those who want to know more about Samus Aran and her motivations.
Game Shark (Sep 03, 2010)
So, what we have here is a game that combines fresh mechanics that generally work very well with a story that taints the hell out of the series and sucks a great deal of life out of the game itself. To put it in the simplest possible terms, Other M is largely a joy to play, and largely a torturous pain to watch, and you unfortunately cannot choose to experience one without the other.
The A.V. Club (Sep 06, 2010)
The characterization is a bold move, and turns out to be just one of many in Other M that make for a memorable, courageous, but somewhat flawed Metroid.
Gamers Daily News (Sep 13, 2010)
Other M should last players for several hours, and even has another segment to play after the credits roll. After the main game, you may return to collect any items you missed the first time around before fighting an extra boss and getting a few extra scenes to cap off the story. The core of the Metroid experience is here, even with the new ideas being tried, and it is mostly enjoyable. On the other hand, the plot stretches some points too far and there are a lot of small, irritating flaws that combine to drag down what should have been a system-defining classic. The end result is instead just competent, and while that means Other M is more good than bad, ’just competent’ is not a phrase I wanted to use to describe a series like Metroid. If you come in with realistic expectations you’ll probably walk away happy, but do understand that Other M is unfortunately one of the weaker entries in the Metroid lineup.
MAN!AC (Sep, 2010)
70 (Sep 02, 2010)
Metroid: Other M is a decent Wii action game, and Metroid fans with the persistence to get past its fiddly controls, poor dialogue and "pin the tail on the donkey" scanning will love the way it can still capture that old Super Metroid feel. All the same, this feels like a big step backwards from the mighty Metroid Prime trilogy, and a game that will probably go down in history as an oddball curio rather than a bona-fide Metroid classic.
GamerGen (Jun 24, 2011)
Console Obsession (Jan 21, 2011)
Metroid: Other M is hardly the highpoint of a consistently excellent series, although it is a game that is still well worth a play. It may be lacking in challenge and is more linear than other titles in the series, but this is still a stylish action game that does more than enough to attract a new audience. Fans on the other hand will either look at it as a fresh start or a step backward.
Level (Sweden) (Oct, 2010)
GamesRadar (Aug 27, 2010)
These three viewpoints are indicative of the game itself – it’s a collection of very different ideas sandwiched into one game that occasionally can’t pull them all together. It often feels like Team Ninja had an idea, and Nintendo had an idea, and neither game was fully realized, opting instead to mash together first and third-person views when one or the other would have sufficed.
N-Europe (Sep 22, 2010)
Metroid: Other M might not be the Metroid we wanted or the one the series needed, but if you forget for a moment the looming presence of Super Metroid and Metroid Prime and let go of the preconceived notions of what Metroid is, or rather what you think it to be, you’ll find out a very good game even if it falls short of greatness. A decent game, but not as good as what you’d expect under the Metroid name.
NintendoWorldReport (Aug 30, 2010)
I beat Metroid: Other M on Saturday night and instantly sat down to write a very negative, raw, emotional review of what had turned out to be a very disappointing game. The next day, however, I sat down with it again and discovered that, bizarrely, it actually improves immensely once you load up your completed game.
69 (Sep 03, 2010)
1UP (Aug 27, 2010)
Her latest adventure turns the unshakable warrior into a vulnerable young woman looking for direction and acceptance from male authority figures. In the hands of a great writer, this is the kind of character evolution that could work; but wrapped in a heavy-handed, meandering sci-fi tale, it just feels disingenuous.
NintendoWorldReport (May 22, 2012)
In style and substance, Other M is a sort of cubist rendition of a Metroid game, trying to introduce a host of previously unrecognized—and often superfluous—perspectives to the familiar structure. The game goes for more of a heightened, often unwieldy interpretation of series standards, and while the result is more or less negotiable, I can't help but wonder how a mechanically condensed, self-restrained cut of Other M might have turned out.
GamersGlobal (Sep 15, 2010)
Destructoid (Aug 31, 2010)
Being the first Metroid directed by series granddaddy Yoshio Sakamoto in years, you’d guess that Other M would be a return to form in both mechanics and series continuity. You’d only be half right -- Other M picks up the narrative torch right where fan-favorite Super Metroid left off, but manages to stray wildly from a classic formula fans have come to expect.
Game Informer Magazine (Aug 27, 2010)
But an hour or two of less painful gameplay can’t make up for the bad design choices at this game’s core. It especially can’t make up for what Other M has done to Samus as a character. She’ll forever be trapped in my mind as a whiny, talkative child who is too willing to give up her freedom and too petulant to be likable. Metroid: Other M is the most disappointing Nintendo release in quite some time and a blemish that isn’t likely to be forgotten on an otherwise superb franchise.
Gaming since 198x (Sep 27, 2010)
Nukezilla (Nov 01, 2012)
It’s a disappointment through and through, but one that I don’t necessarily regret playing. Despite the complaints I have about this game, it starts to redeem itself in its twilight hours, but never enough to undo the damage done by the terrible writing, voice work and the developers’ overconfidence.
The Escapist (Sep 02, 2010)
It would be easy to write Metroid Other M off on the basis of the few things it gets wrong but the combat and exploration elements are strong enough to overcome these limitations. The combat is intense, if a bit uneven in terms of the overall challenge, and the exploration elements are enjoyable.
Game Critics (Sep 22, 2010)
Without its irritating narrative, Other M would be a commendable, if not particularly inspiring, exploration-based shooter. If the box had borne some other name, I might even have been able to react to the story with mere boredom rather than anger, but the box says Metroid. The innovations are few, and the unskippable story is outright destructive of the series' heritage.
GameSpy (Aug 31, 2010)
All told, Other M is a sum of imperfect parts and compromised ideas. Yes, it tells its story well, and layers some long-overdue context on a character we've known and loved for decades. Yes, its split camera angles weaken the combat and puzzle mechanics. And yes, despite my laundry list of complaints, I mostly enjoyed the game (though, to be transparent with you, a little part of me wonders if I'm blinded by nostalgia for Metroid's 2D days). This is not the Metroid game we deserve, but it will do for now.
Gamer Limit (Sep 09, 2010)
Metroid: Other M is really a mixed bag of tricks. The developers decided to try out a bunch of new and different ideas, but they aren’t all executed properly and they don’t all meld together well. The biggest hurdle holding it back is the poor gameplay, which could be solved with a better control scheme and a more accurate aiming system. I could do without the emotional story as well, but some people might enjoy it. What I do know is Metroid: Other M feels like an experiment into what a Metroid game could be, and while some will love it, others will downright hate it. I would recommend that even the most hardcore fans rent it before making a full-blown purchase. While Metroid: Other M is infused with a dose of style and flare the series has been lacking, the horrible control scheme and overly emotional story ruins the whole experience, making the game extremely aggravating to play.
50 (Sep 14, 2010)
I hold out hope for the future of the Metroid series, but if you’re like me and this series is more to you than just a pleasant distraction, I’d advise skipping Other M.
Thunderbolt Games (Sep 11, 2010)
But despite its benefits, the plot is bland, predictable, and utterly cliche. By limiting Samus in such a nonsensical way, the game goes against everything the series is about. The exploration aspects are severely limited, and the linear designs are watered down versions of the stuff you’d find in the previous games.
The Game Hoard (Jul 25, 2018)
While Metroid: Other M took a lot of risks, it’s a surprising level of rigidity that undermines the game. The insistence that the game can’t use the Wii Nunchuck means the controls are limited and awkward, with first-person mode stiff and dodging made too easy to fit the limited control method. The attempt at writing a more meaningful story for Other M could have paid off, but the commitment to internal narration leads to dull introspection that only uses the basic stereotypes of female behavior to create Samus’s personality. With a more creative or at least less overt narrative and more accommodating controls, the parts of Other M that are more inspired like well-crafted area design and a snappy combat system that only just falls short could have set Metroid down a new path of 3D action and exploration. What we are left with instead is an enjoyable action game interrupted too often by its failed attempts at being something more.
The Video Game Critic (Oct 23, 2010)
I'm sure a lot of people enjoy Metroid: Other M and God bless them. Personally, I found this awkward hybrid of two game styles to bring out the worst of both. I'm filing this one under M - as in Mess.
When it was first announced that Team Ninja was going to be releasing a Metroid game, the reactions were mixed. Some people love the company, known for its exceptional graphics. Others loath them for their difficult A.I. Most people both love and loath them for not knowing what a real woman looks like, but putting pillow-breasted Japanese girls who pole dance in their games instead. Here, Samus has only been given a never-before-seen beauty mark. But her personality has suddenly become like a submissive, shy maiden. And to fans who admired the tough, take-charge character from before, it’s almost as damaging.
