Retro Gamer (Jul 17, 2008)
Visuals are intricately detailed, enemies attack you at an incredibly fast pace, while your ears are assaulted by a rocking track that sets the mood perfectly. Add in beautifully crafted score mechanics and a couple of rock-hard bosses and Star Soldier is one of the purest and most addictive shooters we've played for some time.

Worth Playing (Sep 28, 2008)
Ultimately, Star Soldier R is an excellent little game if you're a shooter fan and a high score junkie who sorely misses the 16-bit era and its corresponding 2-D style of play. Make no mistake, this is a game with somewhat limited appeal, and if you're not in the target audience, it's likely to register a pretty quick "meh" and get passed over for something new. For the old-school shmup fans out there, though, Star Soldier R is pure gold and an absolute steal at only 800 Wii points ($8).

Cubed3 (May 29, 2008)
Whilst many will look at this as being just a two stage shooter for a high price that is definitely the wrong viewpoint. This ‘Caravan Mode’ version of Star Soldier is perfect for those that cannot commit to working their way through a full shmup outing. Without the online element the appeal would not been anywhere near as high, so thankfully Hudson’s inclusion was a wise one since the sheer addictive quality of coming back time and time again to up your worldwide ranking means gamers will, in the long run, likely play this more than other quality WiiWare offerings such as LostWinds and My Life as a King. A fantastically crafted space shooter that has a resounding ‘just one more go’ feel to it…Be sure to give this a whirl.

Hooked Gamers (May 30, 2008)
While Star Soldier R lacks a story mode, it's a great WiiWare title that will always keep you coming back to advance in your regional and worldwide high scores. The only complains I personally have about this game are the lack of a story mode and the useless Quick Shot mode. At 800 Wii Points, this is a great WiiWare title to get for your Wii.

Nintendo Difference (Jun 23, 2008)

Nintendo Life (May 19, 2008)
Rating Star Soldier R is a difficult task. On one hand, these two levels are really outstanding and well executed, but on the other hand, there are only the two and they are basically the same every time you play them. It's fun to shoot for a higher score each time and to try and beat the scores of gamers around the country using the Wi-Fi connection, but as good as the game is, it really leaves you wanting more. Had this been a full campaign shooter, it would have easily scored a 9, but it's obviously going to leave some gamers, who are expecting a more complete shooter package, feeling a bit disappointed. That being said, if you can appreciate this game for what it is, you're likely to find a very enjoyable shooter experience. And at only 800 Wii points, it's one heck of a bargain.

Well, Wii Ware is finally here, and suffice to say all new original content is a welcome addition to the little Japanese wonder machine. As much as I love the classics, it is nice to see Nintendo making positive strides in catching up with the competition. As for Star Soldier R in particular, it is certainly a decent game. Is it worth the price of admission? Maybe, it all depends on how entertaining you find trying to break high scores. Although, it is definitely a great way to determine who is buying the first round of beers.

NintendoWorldReport (May 20, 2008)
Star Soldier R is a fun, focused experience, and if you know that when playing it you'll be rewarded with exactly what it's advertising. If you like the possibility of chasing the high-score carrot in a brief, replayable shoot-'em-up, it'll suit you perfectly.

GameSpot (May 21, 2008)
Although Star Soldier R would have been better served as an alternate mode in a full-fledged top-down shooter, it is still worth the 800 Wii points ($8) even with just two levels. The nimble controls and fixed rules combine to make an experience that is extremely difficult to put down. Whether you're competing only with your friends or trying to be the best SSR player in the world, the game is engrossing almost to a fault. This is a satisfying hardcore title to help launch the WiiWare service.

Star Soldier R could've been so much more, with at least five or six more levels, a difficulty curve and two-player interactivity. As it stands, though, it's surprisingly fun. The online leaderboards make the game exciting and we dig the visuals, despite playing through the same terrain. Despite its short length, this will keep you busy until the real Star Soldier sequel arrives.

1UP (May 19, 2008)
At 800 Wii Points, some may not want to jump in, especially since Super Star Soldier on Virtual Console is 600 Points -- a "real" full-length shooter -- and the layout of its 2-Minute Mode level more or less provided the basis for Star Soldier R's first stage. But you won't get Wi-Fi rankings by going the retro route; if you really want to prove your shoot-em-up prowess to the world (in five minutes or less), Star Soldier R is one of the better options.

Digital Chumps (May 25, 2008)
But, regardless of how fun it is, the bottom line is that there just isn’t enough here. Sure, the game features simple, attractive visuals and a classic shooter-style adrenaline-pumping soundtrack, but apart from that (and the leaderboard functionality), this isn’t all that different from the various Virtual Console offerings out there—except those games are cheaper and more robust. My suggestion? Check out some of said games on Virtual Console, including the older Star Soldier titles from Hudson, and you’ll probably be more than satisfied. Then, if you find yourself hopelessly obsessed and you’re absolutely certain you will spend ample time with Star Soldier R, return to WiiWare and consider your options.

Shortness and the fact that there's only 2 levels aside, the game had the potential to be fantastic. The more hardcore fans of arcade shooters will love this. The leaderboards will motivate you to get more out of the game.

IGN (May 19, 2008)
There are people out there that will have a blast with Star Soldier R – we even fall into that category ourselves – but there’s no denying that Hudson is pulling a bit of a fast one with its current product. You’re essentially paying 800 points for a five minute experience that is fun enough to play through multiple times, but with so much more already offered on VC, it simply can’t be justified for anyone but the hardcore, high score-obsessed crowd. It’s a fun game, but it’s far too shallow. There’s even a warning before downloading on the Wii Shop channel that states it is a timed game, and will end after five minutes. It can be fun, but it was also fun as a bonus feature on previous, cheaper shooters already available on VC. We wouldn’t be surprised if the same team that worked on R released a full game down the line, and used Wii Ware as a chance to set up an engine, test the waters, and deliver a smaller chunk of content to make a few quick bucks.

It's all about shooting faster and better, not discovering clever new routes, so unless you're the sort of person who actively enjoys playing the same small sections over and over, searching for new ways to eke out those extra few points, there's absolutely nothing here to warrant an 800-Point purchase.

While Star Soldier isn't the deepest, most nuanced game available, it has some pretty tight shooting and fast-paced game play. If you're that second type of gamer who just has to have the highest score, you may find 8 dollars worth of game play. Otherwise, save yourself some money and finger pain.
