Pure Nintendo (Oct 03, 2011)
There is so much to see and do in Super Mario Galaxy 2 that you really have to experience it for yourself. The original Galaxy game was great, but Galaxy 2 is the creme de la creme in the series. It innovates in so many new areas and is one of the most purely fun games you’ll play all year. It has a lot in common with Galaxy 1, but more of the same (and then some) is a very, very, very good thing.
Games TM (Jun 10, 2010)
It miraculously outclasses a game that many believed could not be bettered, and once again leaves us wondering just how close Nintendo's bar has come to reaching its theoretical peak.
100 (Jun 04, 2010)
Super Mario Galaxy 2 isn't a groundbreaker like Mario 64 or the original SMG, but it is the best 3D entry in the series yet, rolling up everything that's been good from Mario 64 onwards into one fantastic, non-stop delight of a game. Its appeal might not be 100% universal, but it's a game that hardcore gamers and families alike will adore, and one of the most inventive and engaging game releases in years.
100 (Jun 10, 2010)
Giant Bomb (May 21, 2010)
Super Mario Galaxy 2 sees both Nintendo and Mario himself in top form, delivering an adventure that's as consistently exciting and inventive as ever.
Electricpig (Jun 04, 2010)
After witnessing the dazzling brilliance of Mario’s latest space romp it feels almost shameful that people questioned Nintendo’s insistence on returning to an established blueprint for Super Mario Galaxy 2. This sequel is pure ecstasy in digital form and effortlessly succeeds in making almost every other release of 2010 look positively ordinary.
Retroage (Jul 15, 2010)
The Video Game Critic (Jul 31, 2010)
Super Mario Galaxy is one of those special games that you can become lost in. It's easy to make progress, but the vast number of side quests and hidden items make it feel endless.
Edge (May 06, 2010)
Marvel at the pieces, but appreciate the whole. This isn’t a game that redefines the genre: this is one that rolls it up and locks it away. We’ve come so far, from stepping on mushrooms to drop-kicking meteors into the heart of the sun; Galaxy 2 offers a new understanding of where we’ve been, a new sense of wonder at where we’ll go next.
Video Game Talk (Jun 05, 2010)
If you loved the first Super Mario Galaxy, you will adore the sequel. It builds on the strong foundation that the original laid out. Add in the new power-ups, our wonderful green dinosaur and a wild challenge mode to get an amped up version of Mario’s world. I really haven’t had this much fun playing a Mario title since his first entry into a 3D world, Super Mario 64. Fans of the long time franchise will be enamored with the amazing level of entertainment that SMG2 exudes and encouraged to push on to get their gold stars in each level. You are looking at about 30 hours of entertainment for the average player and 50 to 60 hours for the most dedicated Mario fan to collect everything. (There are also rewards for collecting everything, but I won’t spoil them here) Don’t hesitate to pick up Super Mario Galaxy 2 immediately as it is well worth the full retail price.
100 (Aug 04, 2010)
One of the best, if not the best game on the Wii. Nintendo have created such a masterpiece that I, again, begin to worry; where do they go next? I can’t imagine a better platformer.
100 (Jun 23, 2010)
When Nintendo is so on-song like this it’s easy to forgive Miyamoto for producing casual titles like Wii Fit, Nintendogs, and even Wii Music. If the success of those titles means every now and then we get a game as magical as Super Mario Galaxy 2 then I’m all for it. Bravo Nintendo, bravo.
@Gamer (Jun, 2010)
The only real downside to this vastly improved sequel is the complete absence of a story. The first Galaxy title showed Nintendo team's editorial prowess. But in the sequel, throwaway characters and forgettable dialogue cut away at the game's charm, despite the precious graphics and cute sound effects. On the other hand, you'll probably be too wrapped up in one of Nintendo's best Mario adventures to care about Peach's cake.
Nintendo Life (May 22, 2010)
Every once in a while a video game comes along that's just so spectacular that it ends up defining the very system it's released on and raises the bar by which all other games in the series and genre will be judged. It's safe to say that game has now arrived on the Wii console. Consider the bar officially raised.
Level 7 (Jun 08, 2010)
Lejano Oriente (May 26, 2010)
100 (May 21, 2010)
There's so much to like in Super Mario Galaxy 2 and plenty to see. Old and new elements come together in a fantastic, can't-miss adventure. In an era of Wii shovelware, this title stands out as an example of the way games should be.
Digital Chumps (May 21, 2010)
This is no mere sequel… it is everything Galaxy was and more, a vast menagerie of the most outlandish ideas the creative minds at Nintendo could apply to a Mario game, twisting and contorting the template at every opportunity, all in the name of relentlessly entertaining gameplay. Even the harshest critics will struggle to find fault in its symphony of imagination, execution, and polish, while fans will cherish its brilliance for years to come as one of the very best games in history. Quite simply put, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the reason I still play videogames. And for that, it deserves the highest praise I can possibly bestow.
1UP (May 21, 2010)
If you loved the first Mario Galaxy, but you're wary that this follow-up is a mere shade of its predecessor, than rest assured that this fan-service laden sequel feels just as new as the first Mario Galaxy. Everything from the sweeping orchestral score (which even includes new arrangements of classic tunes thrown in simply to tickle the nostalgia of long-time fans) to the ingenious layout of traps, puzzles and platforming speaks to a level of craftsmanship that only comes from years of refinement and reinvention. And if you've yet to try out Mario on the Wii (or only played New Super Mario Bros. Wii), than Galaxy 2 proves how good design can make even the seemingly complicated, gravity-defying acrobatics of Mario's world feel completely effortless.
Thunderbolt Games (May 26, 2010)
The sheer variety and unique twists on ideas make for some of the greatest platforming you’ll ever see. You can go through whole stretches of this game and find something new and completely different in each passing level. The extra challenges, the new items, and Yoshi all bring even more to the already well-designed levels. Though the graphics are some of the best on the Wii, the soundtrack is what’s going to keep you hooked long after you’ve gotten every star. This makes for one of, if not the best titles on the Wii. Super Mario Galaxy 2 isn’t just another sequel. It’s an experience.
GamersGlobal (Jun 11, 2010)
GameSpot (May 21, 2010)
Super Mario Galaxy 2 is simply an outstanding game. It never rests on its laurels for a second, constantly presenting new objectives and mechanics to push you to never before seen places. Even the two-player mode offers new abilities and delights, making it even more fun to play with a friend by your side. Everything is so well designed and so entertaining that it's easy to get sucked into this world for hours. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is so phenomenal that it's difficult to imagine where Mario could possibly go in the future. But that's hardly your concern now. Mario proves that he is still the king of fun.
IGN (May 20, 2010)
Mario has always been a universally appealing game design and Nintendo has done an incredible job to make sure its key franchise is just as accessible to gamers of all walks of life. Most of all, Super Mario Galaxy 2 perfectly captures that classic videogame charm, the reason why most of us got into gaming from the start.
100 (UK) (May 24, 2010)
A simple extension of the Galaxy concept, Super Mario Galaxy 2 can't possibly have the same impact. But it does have the same spirit, throwing new ideas at you with gleeful and impulsive abandon, leaving you breathless, scrambling happily to keep up. You can't really complain about more of the same, when the same is the one thing it never is.
Hooked Gamers (May 29, 2010)
As this game is very similar to the original game it's not for you if you didn't like that one. For those that did, you will find a game that improves on every aspect of the original game, and provides the best platforming experience in years. With fantastic level design, superb graphics and audio, and some unique and interesting power ups, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a must own for every Wii gamer.
97 (May 27, 2010)
Super Mario Galaxy 2 takes you to the brink and back time and time again. Jumping, sliding, climbing and floating your way to each new planet is as familiar as it was to jump on that very first Koopa in Mario Bros back on the NES.
Extreme Gamer (Jun 07, 2010)
Nothing will ever match the mind blowing gravity bending innovation that was experienced in the first game. Nothing can replace the initial awe of literally running around a planet, or long jumping into orbit that we experienced in the first game, but Galaxy far and away succeeds in refining a near perfect experience. You're Wii is going to be working harder than it has in a long time.
gamrReview (May 29, 2010)
Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the complete package. Featuring gameplay that boasts a staggering amount of variety and capable of seamless transition between 2D and 3D with gravity defying results. Owning this game is like being able to access your best day ever at an amusement park whenever you want. There are those who will readily declare it superior to its predecessor, and then there are those like me who believe they are two sides of the same pristine coin. Ultimately, all words are useless because Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are an experience that must be played to fully understand. Once again, Mario and Nintendo prove they are at the top of their game and that their star is ever rising to new and incredible heights.
WiiDSFrance (Jun 08, 2010)
NintendoWorldReport (May 21, 2010)
Super Mario Galaxy 2 takes Super Mario Galaxy and makes a few tweaks to make it more playable. As such, Galaxy 2 instantly catapults itself into the discussion for the title of Best Game Available on Wii. If you liked Super Mario Galaxy even a bit, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a must-have title for your Wii game collection.
Galaxy 2 breaks with tradition to deliver the first ever direct sequel to a 3D Mario game. Nintendo's Japanese team hasn't been shy in letting slip that its second interstellar outing is very much Mario Galaxy part two - and that's exactly how it feels.
Game Informer Magazine (May 19, 2010)
Super Mario Galaxy 2 is perhaps the truest “sequel” in the history of the storied franchise. By that I mean that it is, by and large, just more levels of what we experienced in 2007’s Super Mario Galaxy. On the one hand, that means that it is the first Mario title in years that doesn’t feel like a dramatic reinvention of the platformer. On the other, I’m glad I didn’t have to wait for a new generation of consoles just to get another Mario game.
AusGamers (Jul 01, 2010)
At 17 hours, game finished and only 12 more stars left to absolute completion, I can say it's at least decent in length. And yes, there're plenty of new puzzles, new levels, and more variation in enemies, music and gameplay, but not enough to raise the bar. It's still the king of 3D platformers, it's just more of what we know and love.
Game Revolution (Jun 23, 2010)
Super Mario Galaxy 2 is easily a must-have for the Wii. I kind of hope that the next game will bring Mario back down to Earth, because if he gets any bigger and better, we may need a whole galaxy instead of a floating head-ship to house his ego.
Gaming Age (Jun 25, 2010)
With so much to do and see, this game will challenge even the best gamers out there to try and nab every star in the game. In short, this game is packed chock-full of the very best gaming has to offer and is worthy of any gamer's library. Indeed, Galaxy 2 is a necessity for anyone who even remotely enjoys videogames.
GamesCollection (Jun 24, 2010)
Console Obsession (Jul 28, 2010)
Few games are designed as well as this though, or are as fun to play. It may very well add little new to the formula, but whilst that formula has not had enough added to make it as impactful as its predecessor, Super Mario Galaxy 2 certainly has enough to make it more superior than the original game, and for Nintendo that was a tall order indeed.
Cheat Happens (Jun 01, 2010)
Make no mistake about it, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the best game on the Wii. Much like Super Mario 64 defined the Nintendo 64, the Wii finally has its identity. It’s imaginative, exciting and most importantly – very, very fun. It may come off as a bit challenging for some but it’s also incredibly awarding. In short – you need this game.
Wired (May 21, 2010)
Super Mario Galaxy 2 is thus simultaneously more and less than its predecessor. It expands and elaborates on the gameplay in unpredictable ways, but the last one felt like a bigger, more complete adventure. That said, better core gameplay with less window dressing is infinitely preferable to the reverse.
GamePro (US) (May 21, 2010)
Super Mario Galaxy 2 is truly a rare beast. After all, Nintendo is more than happy to rehash many of their biggest franchises ad nauseum, and the 3D Mario games never stray far from the established norm. But surprisingly, Nintendo seems to have found enough creative elbow room in the Mario Galaxy universe to create an entirely new trip
GameDaily (May 21, 2010)
Nintendo deserves minor criticism for designing such a quick and emotionless intro, and perhaps for reusing concepts from the previous game (the Bee Suit, Boo Mario), but dwelling on these insignificant topics would cause you to misinterpret the much larger picture. Super Mario Galaxy 2, especially for those who played the original, offers both a familiar and original experience that all gamers will enjoy. Buy it without hesitation.
90 (Jun 03, 2010)
GameSpy (May 26, 2010)
I can't remember exactly where I left the first Super Mario Galaxy -- relatively early on, at any rate -- but I never felt compelled to go back to it. I have a feeling that SMG2, on the other hand, will keep me enthralled until I've collected every last one of those stars, tough or not. For the detractors out there: This amounts to way more than the Super Mario Galaxy 1.5 you expected.
BlogCritics Magazine (May 22, 2010)
If you've ever enjoyed a Mario game before you're going to love this one. If you just like platformers you're going to like this one. If you like your games to have an incredible sense of fun to them, you're going to like this one. If you like games to change on a dime and ask something different of you from one level to the next, you're going to like Super Mario Galaxy 2. If, on the other hand, you're a fan of properly classifying things (galaxies, worlds, universes, etc.), Super Mario Galaxy 2 may give you an incurable case of the heebie-jeebies. If that stops you from picking the title up however, you're going to miss out on a galaxy full of fun.
