I could easily go into greater detail on any of the above points, but there’s not much to say beyond the following: If you don't have the game, go out and get it, even if that means having to bug Nintendo to release it in your region.

Small complaints aside, Xenoblade Chronicles does a lot right. It evolves this style of game by taking the necessary steps forward to keep things fresh, while respecting what made the genre so popular in the first place. It will appease both RPG veterans and newcomers alike, proving to everyone that there is a lot more life left in the JRPG genre.
Legendra (Aug 26, 2011)
Quarter to Three (Apr 19, 2012)
There’s a lot more to recommend Xenoblade Chronicles. The dialogue, the humor, the artwork, the prophecy system, the music, the variety of environments, the character progression, the crafting system, the crazy quest density, the quest quality, the memorable characters, the collectibles, the secrets, and so on. This is a landmark achievement in the genre. As of its release, you can no longer talk about great RPGs, or maybe even great games, without also talking about Xenoblade Chronicles.
100 (Aug 26, 2011)
Xenoblade still feels like a JRPG, but it’s a contemporary one, that brings every respect up to speed with the current generation, and then some. Tetsuya Takahashi’s opus is a milestone, and gives a flagging genre and the tiring Wii a lift that could only be achieved by a giant.

RPGamer (Sep 14, 2011)
Despite its length, Monolith Soft has managed the feat of keeping Xenoblade an incredibly enjoyable experience throughout. The top-notch story only furthers the fascination in the unique world that has been lovingly created, and it is a world that fans of the genre deserve to see. Not simply an incredibly solid experience throughout, both the world and abilities of the Monado add something new to the experience, and the substantiality of the side content will require an extraordinary amount of effort for future games to match. While the comparative lack of RPGs means it isn't hard to be one of the best on the system, Xenoblade goes beyond that to be right up there with the best of the console generation as a whole.
Joystiq (Apr 06, 2012)
Considering that aging hardware is just about the only complaint keeping Xenoblade away from absolute JRPG glory, it's a no-brainer of a recommendation. Yes, the story still has its share of silliness and deus ex machinas -- it is a JRPG, after all -- and sometimes the unending chattiness of the violently British voice actors during battle can be a little bit annoying. But these are miniscule flaws when looking at the big picture Xenoblade presents: a charming cast of characters that interact constantly, a uniquely designed and fascinating setting, forward-thinking gameplay systems that combine the best of East and West, and the exhilarating feeling that comes from taking part in an adventure that feels truly epic. Xenoblade more than atones for the sins of its fathers and shouldn't be missed by anyone who appreciates role-playing games of any shade.
ZTGameDomain (Apr 06, 2012)
Xenoblade Chronicles is not only the best RPG this generation, but it’s also my favorite game on the Nintendo Wii. If you like RPGs, then you owe it to yourself to buy this limited time gem of a game. The world and story of Xenoblade Chronicles is one of the most profound gaming experiences in recent years. Fans were right to demand a North American release.
Cheat Code Central (Apr 06, 2012)
Xenoblade Chronicles is such a huge, complex, and epic game that I can't possibly cover everything it offers in a single review. All I can say is that it has earned the first 5.0 score I've given, and I've had the honor to play quite a few excellent games for review. Xenoblade just has something special—a full package that will appeal to a wide variety of gamers and has thrilled thousands who have played it since its European release. If you're even remotely considering getting this game, I encourage you to go out and buy it. Chances are you will not be disappointed.
Digital Spy (Aug 26, 2011)
Monolith Soft has undoubtedly breathed new life into a stagnating genre, while retaining all of the fundamentals that make the RPG such a popular choice with gamers. Xenoblade Chronicles doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it does add a stylish new body and a slick new engine.
Cubed3 (Aug 15, 2011)
Nintendo Wii owners have been waiting for something truly epic to grace the system since launch, and whilst there are superb experiences in the action and platform genres, RPGs have been rather thin on the ground. Good examples that have made it to Europe, such as Opoona, Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo’s Dungeon, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, Fragile Dreams, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers, and Sakura Wars: So Long My Love, have all been criminally overlooked. Now Monolith Soft’s grand Xenoblade Chronicles has arrived, bringing with it an sterling soundtrack, a phenomenal visual impact, vast amount of customisation, intriguing story and massive value for money. With it definitely proving itself to be of the highest calibre on Wii, it is time for RPG fans to take a stand and show their appreciation for this sublime classic.

Nintendojo (Aug 24, 2011)
Xenoblade delivers on every front and makes the JRPG a genre to be proud of again. I haven’t even begun to touch on things like gem-crafting and character affinity yet, but that just goes to show how deep and well-rounded Xenoblade‘s gameplay mechanics really are. You couldn’t do any better than to have this game in your Wii library, and if Xenoblade ever sees its way to the US, make Operation Rainfall count and ensure you grab a copy at the first opportunity.
N-Europe (Aug 16, 2011)
Not only is it easily the most exciting original IP to release on Wii, it is that brand new, quality, hardcore Nintendo title that her fans have been screaming out for since the dawn of the console. You will be exploring, collecting and side-questing for months to come. Then in years to come, once the dust has settled, Xenoblade Chronicles might just be whispered on the lips of Nintendo gamers in the same unparalleled regard as Tales of Symphonia, The World Ends With You and Chrono Trigger. Take up the Monado; it’s time to go and discover a whole new world.
Vandal Online (Aug 23, 2011)

Game Informer Magazine (Apr 06, 2012)
I fell in love with JRPGs in the 16-bit era because they constantly showed me things I’d never seen before. Somewhere in the last 15 years, most RPG developers in Japan have lost sight of that, instead rehashing the same fantasies and floating by on nostalgia. Xenoblade Chronicles is the first JRPG I’ve played this generation that has me excited for the future rather than simply reminding me of happy memories from my past. Monolith Soft deserves praise for creating it.
95 (Sep 01, 2011)
Hooked Gamers (Apr 05, 2012)
Xenoblade is not the second coming of the JRPG, it’s a throw-back to the genre’s heyday and (despite a brave showing) the cracks in its technical capabilities are obvious. And yet, for those willing to overlook the game’s humble delivery, there is trapped within its amber the DNA of the great giants that once inhabited these lands. Ham-fisted Jurassic Park analogies aside, Xenoblade Chronicles is not really the resurrection of the JPRG we were promised – it’s more important than that – It’s positive proof that the genre was never dead to begin with.
Worth Playing (Apr 03, 2012)
It seems almost criminal to box in Xenoblade Chronicles with the term "JRPG." Xenoblade Chronicles is an amazing RPG. In some ways, it's like a single-player MMO that effortlessly blends together advantages from both JRPGs and Western RPGs. Despite its linear, but deeply entertaining, story and its decisionless dialogue, the gameplay makes such shortcomings easy to forget. In as much as the Monado has given one of its heroes, Shulk, the ability to see the future, perhaps the same can be said of what Xenoblade Chronicles has brought to the table for JRPGs.
Impulse Gamer (Sep, 2011)
Even though the Nintendo Wii has a successor on the horizon, it's good to see that developers are still supporting this console with Grade-A titles and Xenoblade Chronicles is easily one of the best Japanese RPG titles in quite a few years. Not only do they give the genre a much needed 21st century facelift but the gameplay is quite fluidic and dynamic as opposed to many older Japanese RPG titles. With a rather easy learning curve, this game can be played by a variety of people and whether you're a newbie or veteran gamer, Xenoblade Chronicles provides an immersive world filled with action and story that easily allows you to play it again and again. Recommended!
DS-x2 (Sep 18, 2011)
It's been quite some time since an RPG of this calibre has been release on any console but with Xenoblade Chronicles, Nintendo and Monolith Soft have created a modern day great and undoubtedly the greatest JRPG experience to arrive on a home console this generation. Rarely has everything gelled together so seamlessly with everything, the visuals, the story, the gameplay, the audio, and the controls coming together to create something which many would never have thought possible with the Wii and very single moment of the game's epic runtime is an exhibition in video game craftsmanship. It represents a new standard for the modern JRPG and provides an experience which is not to be missed.
NintendoWorldReport (Apr 04, 2012)
Despite a few minor gripes, I have to say that I really treasured the overall experience. I would go further than saying this game is really good, however, and go as far as to say that Xenoblade is great. Not in a "really good" way, either. This game is great as in "unusual or considerable in degree". Xenoblade Chronicles is considerable in the production value it took to make something of this scope; Xenoblade Chronicles is considerable for telling a story with more layers than one can count while retaining a level of accessibility for people of any walk of life; Xenoblade Chronicles is considerable for having an active combat system more engaging than anything I have seen in years. Although, with all things considered, Xenoblade Chronicles is really good, too.
A deep breath of fresh air for an arguably stagnant genre, Xenoblade Chronicles is essential gaming for anybody with a flavour for role playing. It represents the absolute best of what traditional Japanese RPGs could be, and triumphantly what Japanese RPGs should be.
95 (Sep 13, 2011)
NGamer (Feb 01, 2012)
That you won’t find a better RPG this year goes without saying. From gameplay mechanics to storyline to visual flair, Xenoblade is an amazing piece of work.
GameTrailers (Mar 27, 2012)
There's been a lot of talk lately about how Japanese RPGs are fading into irrelevancy with their increasingly linear designs, but Xenoblade delivers a world where you're free to explore at your own pace that frequently entices you to indulge in its many extracurricular activities. This is easily one of the best games on the Wii, and one that you shouldn't miss out on.
XGN (Sep 02, 2011)
The result is a game that is far more than the sum of its parts, and whose parts are golden. The storyline is fantastical and dramatic, but never overbearing, with some nuanced performances from the voice actors packing a real emotional impact. There's a staggering array of missions and side quests to engage in while an innovative battle system provides the final block upon which one of the best games to come out of Japan in recent years builds.
Anime News Network (Apr 18, 2012)
Such bothers are easily swallowed up by the grander scope of Xenoblade Chronicles, however. There's always something new to find, whether it's a snippet of backstory or some imposingly huge monster. It may lack a truly compelling tale, but it's easily braced by the rest of the game. A by-the-numbers narrative isn't quite so typical when there's a massive world to see and many a rewarding battle to fight. Xenoblade delivers both in excess, and it reaches heights few other RPGs even know about.
Spazio Games (Sep 05, 2011)
RPG Site (Sep 01, 2011)
The battle system is fun, engaging and interesting, the world is downright beautiful and the story is well told - if sometimes cheesy - on almost every front - and that checks just about all the boxes I'd ever ask a JRPG to check. It's a JRPG that remains staunchly traditional but also twists those traditions in interesting and sometimes brave ways to make a better experience, and that's something we've really lacked this generation so far.
90 (Aug 31, 2011)
Tych którzy szukają tytułu, z ciekawą zróżnicowaną fabułą (poruszającą poważne tematy), dość mocno rozbudowanym systemem rozwoju postaci, ogromnym światem oraz żywymi bohaterami z przeszłością – zdecydowanie zachęcam do spróbowania swoich sił w Xenoblade Chronicles.
GamerGen (Sep 07, 2011)
90 (Aug 12, 2011)
The best Japanese role-player of the current generation and a big step forwards for the genre in terms of accessibility and ambition.
The game's positive attributes far outweigh the bad. Xenoblade Chronicles is an immersive RPG that will suck you into its massive world and keep you engaged as you complete scores of optional side quests and learn more about that intriguing world. If you like RPGs, you owe it to yourself to play Xenoblade Chronicles.
Overall, Xenoblade Chronicles is one of those fantastic RPG’s without a lot of filler. It is a smooth yet fast paced game that manages to offer up enough complexity to satisfy hardcore gamers but is also accessible enough for those new to the RPG world. The story is engaging and the amount of exploration in the game is impressive. While the games visuals are nothing to write home about, Xenoblade Chronicles for the Wii stands as one of the best RPG experiences on the Wii to date.
Inside Gaming (Apr 09, 2012)
Xenoblade Chronicles has earned a few titles. It’s one of the best games on the Wii, it’s one of the best RPGs in this generation, and more than that, it’s one of the better JRPGs ever made. While western games have trended towards hiding the systemic, video-gamey aspects of RPGs, Xenoblade fully embraces them and creates one of the most complex and satisfying experiences of the past few years. If you can tolerate the Wii’s lacking presentation, you absolutely shouldn’t miss it.
Game Arena (Sep 06, 2011)
Generic story elements aside, Xenoblade Chronicles is an outstanding game - without a doubt one of the best JRPGs available on the current generation of consoles. If you are a fan of JRPGs this game belongs on your shelf - here’s hoping Nintendo Australia keep bringing such excellent titles to our shores.
Meristation (Aug 22, 2011)
He aquí la prueba.
G4 TV: X-Play (Apr 12, 2012)
Xenoblade is a game that all jRPG fans should play, this past generation having been somewhat of a disaster for the genre. It takes most of what worked and refined those elements, evolved them, to achieve something both unique and accessible. For its faults, we criticize, but in Xenoblade Chronicles, these faults are born from excess ambition, from struggling to achieve something new. Despite them, Xenoblade shines brightly into the Wii’s fading night.
Games TM (Aug 11, 2011)
Beautiful, feature-packed and brimming with creative remedies for the ails of a stagnating genre, that NOA should overlook such a shining example of what a JRPG can be paints a very different company to the Nintendo that went out at E3 with a call to arms for the hardcore. Still, by the time you read this, it might finally have been announced for the US. Or, more likely, it won’t. Either way, consider this a universal recommendation of Xenoblade in all its forms. If nothing else, we’re just glad we’re not the ones doing the importing for once…
Gamer Limit (Sep 01, 2011)
Here lies a game grounded within a genre that refuses to change despite decades of innovation in game design. However, this is far from a bad thing. Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, Monolith Software has perfected it with subtle enhancements that only serve to streamline and improve the experience. Comfortable to tread on familiar ground and deliver excellence, Nintendo delivers one of the best JRPGs in recent memory with Xenoblade Chronicles.
Console Obsession (Sep 09, 2011)
Xenoblade Chronicles has all that’s required to make a wonderful RPG, and all those components in combination results in one of the finer examples of the genre that this generation has yet seen and one of the Wii’s last great offerings, before it waggles off to console heaven.
Digital Chumps (Mar 30, 2012)
Xenoblade Chronicles fundamentally "fixes" much what's been unsatisfying with Japanese role playing games - and yet that aspect feels totally incidental. It has much bigger ideas on its mind and claims an identity beyond a simple list of fixes. In the end Xenoblade Chronicles can be revealed through the elegance and simplicity of its title screen; a neatly wrapped present doesn't need an aggressive preamble to punch up the surprise inside. In the case of Xenoblade Chronicles, the quality of its contents speaks for itself.
RPGFan (Apr 06, 2012)
(1) Apart from the rare hiccup, there isn't much that Xenoblade Chronicles does wrong. The story may get a bit ahead of itself at times, and the sheer magnitude of it all may feel overwhelming, but these are trivial points that do not matter in the end. Xenoblade Chronicles is a beacon of quality within a quagmire of mediocrity, and I know it will have gamers coming back for more in the years to come. (2) By never punishing my curiosity or sense of wonder with the world, Xenoblade provides a wonderfully relaxing and fun experience of adventuring, lost among our quick save systems and complete reliance on quest markers and checklist tasks. You may find yourself occasionally frustrated with a design choice, but do yourself a favor and look past them, for the simple act of carefree exploration and discovery appears lost to most developers these days. Mr. Spock might ask why you climb the mountain, and you can calmly reply the same way as Captain Kirk: "Because it's there."
gamrReview (Sep 04, 2011)
While I wouldn’t personally call it the greatest JRPG of this generation, I can definitely understand where the sentiment comes from. Xenoblade Chronicles’ fast paced battle system never got boring, and the simplified questing structure combined with a massive number of quests means that people who love the game will be busy for quite some time to come. Hopefully Nintendo of America and Reggie will soon realize the error of their ways and release this to the rest of the world. Until then, I guess the UK will have quite the video game export business going, and European gamers finally have something to hang over North American gamers’ heads.
Xenoblade Chronicles is one of those titles that requires time set aside to learn and enjoy and there's many, many hours of exploration. It's got a fascinating main story buffered by multiple side quests and if you're the sort that enjoys exploring massive worlds that you'll loose yourself in and squeeze until it's dry, make sure to schedule in at least 100 hours for one of the last gems you'll find on the Wii, and one of the most engaging J-RPGs of this generation.

No Japanese RPG has more successfully married its various components this hardware generation. It's a game that invites us to reassess an entire genre, pointing to a bold future while nodding its respect towards the past. It's a towering triumph.

IGN (Apr 03, 2012)
Xenoblade Chronicles is the best Japanese RPG of this generation. The fact that it looks like it's from the last generation is its only drawback, but its technical limitations are offset by imaginative artistic direction, innovative and compelling combat, and thoughtful design. It's a throwback to the glory days of the genre, proof that there are always new ways to tell a story. If you've ever felt neglected by the lack of in-depth gaming epics on the Wii, you owe it to yourself to buy this.

Actually this Xenoblade Chronicles is a huge surprise and one that allows the dust to be taken of the Wii again. An epic adventure in an unequalled open and beautiful world that's filled with original events, opponents, characters and gameplay. Especially the latter is impressive as it seems the devs took all the best of RPGs of the last ten years and put that together to form this pure diamond. Those who like role-playing games should definitely get this one, even if only because it's proof the Wii has more to offer than what we've seen the last couple of years.

Wonders and terrors are equally positioned in
the world to imbue even the slightest diversion off
the beaten track with drama and anticipation. When married to one of the strongest battle systems in the genre and a cast of characters and story that twist convention, this world becomes irresistible. It’s a
potent return to form for Takahashi, then, a glowing comeback for the Japanese RPG, and an injection of creativity for some tired hardware. Xenoblade Chronicles manages to impress, enrich and, best of all, inspire wonder.
GameSpot (Aug 19, 2011)
Xenoblade Chronicles is a remarkable game. It drags the JRPG into the 21st century, modernising many of the genre's traits and nailing a pace that outclasses the majority of its peers. Even coming from Tetsuya Takahashi--a man whose previous credits include Chrono Trigger and the other Xeno titles--it's a hugely surprising, versatile game. It has everything that seasoned JRPG veterans are looking for, but it also manages to lift the barrier for entry for those new to the genre. It retains the traditions it wants to and modernises the aspects it needs to. It's not only one of the best JRPGs in years; it's also one of the best RPGs regardless of subgenre. Xenoblade Chronicles is a captivating, magical game which deserves to be hailed as the revolution it is.
Nintendo Life (Aug 19, 2011)
Xenoblade Chronicles perfectly reaffirms the quality of experience possible from the JRPG genre. Epic in scale and setting, the story mode alone will consume over 50 hours of your gaming life. This isn’t a title to rush through, however; you'll spend many more hours making the most of its incredible complexity, enhancing a range of abilities and exploring the world’s ecosystem. Although the developers have done a terrific job of incorporating daunting detail with intuitive controls, this title is still best suited to gamers with the capability, diligence and passion to see it through. For them, this is an experience that must not be missed.

I’m not typically a big fan of writing reviews for games that Iove. Obviously I’m afraid my objectivity will be thrown out the window and I’ll just turn what should be a review of a game into a list of the things I like about it while ignoring its flaws but I’m also afraid that by looking at a game that I love so much with a more critical eye that I will somehow like it less. But while I definitely am not giving Xenoblade Chronicles a perfect score it remains one of my absolute favorite games of all time. The incredible story, the imaginative world, the deep and engaging combat and the sheer scope of it all combine to create a game that is truly remarkable and deserves to be played by as many people as possible. A modern classic.

Xenoblade has a reasonable average cutscene length. It more or less tells its story in the space of a single game. It does not contain wildly inappropriate religious imagery. It does not require a semester’s course in Gnostic philosophy or a copy of Twilight of the Idols to explain what is going on. The screen doesn’t ever go black for long stretches with nothing but white letters superimposed on top. Most important of all, though, Xenoblade Chronicles is genuinely fun to play. It’s an RPG with an extra-capital G, a gameplay-driven game. That’s a sign of real progress from Monolith Soft, and hopefully promise of even better games to come.
Games Finder (Nov 02, 2015)
What the game lacks on a visual level it makes up for it with streamlined gameplay that is both engaging and enjoyable. Xenoblade Chronicles is definitely a game that the Wii has needed for a long time.
Game Critics (May 24, 2012)
When factoring all the pluses and minuses together, it's clear that Xenoblade Chronicles is not the "savior of the JRPG" as some have proclaimed—and that the statement probably wasn't fair in the first place. Instead, it's a really good JRPG that looks to broaden the genre's horizons in terms of design and aesthetics. In this capacity, it mostly succeeds. Xenoblade's a lengthy game with a lot for players to sink their teeth into that never quite wears out its welcome (although there are moments where it comes close...). Takahashi has crafted what may be his most perfectly realized game to date, and it's my hope that we'll see more from this universe in the future. Xenoblade may not be the greatest JRPG ever, but it's certainly one of the best games on the Nintendo Wii.

Gamekult (Aug 19, 2011)
GamesRadar (Apr 03, 2012)
While the lack of difficulty is a major bummer, it doesn’t overshadow Xenoblade Chronicles’ many other accomplishments. It offers a singularly beautiful world, streamlined, interesting gameplay, likeable characters, and a fantastic soundtrack - for these reasons alone it’s probably the best RPG on the Wii. Lest you think we’re damning it with faint praise, there’s no denying that Xenoblade is invigorating and engaging like few recent games of its kind, giving us reason to hope that this once-proud genre may yet have better days ahead. Visit the strange world of Xenoblade for 100-odd hours and see if you don’t feel the same.
Destructoid (Apr 04, 2012)
I am incredibly grateful to Xenoblade Chronicles, for it has rekindled my love for console JRPGs, a love that had been systematically throttled by the likes of Square Enix and tri-Ace for the past few years. Not since Lost Odyssey have I been so thoroughly entranced by a Japanese role-player. As I type this, the beautifully sweeping music from the Bionis' Leg area is washing through my head, accompanied by fond memories of successful chain attacks and expertly crafted gems. There's no denying that Xenoblade has its low points, but those high points are some of the highest of the genre. If you own a Wii, there's very little room to question -- this is a must-have game for Nintendo's humble little system.
Gameplay (Benelux) (Sep 28, 2011)
Like the rest of Japanese RPG mastermind Tetsuya Takahashi’s works, Xenoblade is a deeply flawed epic that still deserves a look from all role-playing fans.
