Graphics are a bit on the grainy side, but it doesn't really detract from the game itself. At full price, this was a barrel of laughs, and for a tenner, it's a steal. Put on your plus-fours and a silly cap, and give this a whirl.

AmigaThe Games Machine (UK) (May, 1989)
The Amiga version of this Star Player wacky ball 'n' hole game has the same clear, colourful graphic style as the ST. The sound's been improved with some original quality voices adding humour to the tunes, while gameplay is unchanged, giving Amiga owners plenty of competitive, addictive and zany fun.

Atari STThe Games Machine (UK) (Apr, 1989)
Zany Golf appears to be an innocent little game, and as such may easily be overlooked. This would be a mistake as once the control system is mastered - which doesn't take long - the variety of unusual holes becomes enthralling, particular when competing against friends. Though there aren't many holes, lowering your score (below par) is a good incentive for further goes. Data disks would be a nice idea for the future.

Play is such an enjoyable combination of luck and skill (with a bit of frustration thrown in for good measure) that you'll be coming back for it for ages. If alien blasting isn't your thing, rush out and buy this now - I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

AmigaAmiga Action (Jan, 1991)
Are you fed up with zapping aliens? All you want to do is sit back and relax with a nice peaceful game. Zany Golf isjust the game. In this totally addictive crazy golf simulation all you have to do is get the ball down the hole. Fun for all ages.

AmigaZzap! (Apr, 1989)
Look across the page a minute. Notice the type of game being reviewed? It's a crazy golf simulation! Isn't that a coincidence, what with this being a crazy golf sim as well? The difference is that in Mini Golf most of the play takes place on flat, two dimensional greens, whereas in Zany Golf all the action takes place in a multi-directional scrolling, forced perspective environment. Each hole has its own theme – castles, windmills, fans, etc – and requires special tactics to complete. You only have a certain amount of strokes for each hole and there are bonus strokes for, say, touching the fairy with your ball or completing a time bonus.

Nine screens isn't an awful lot for your money, but the graphics makes up for that.

don’t think that I have ever seen anything quite as silly as Zany Golf (except perhaps a Brosette). The latest release for the Amiga from Electronic Arts is a crazy golf simulator with a difference – it is playable.

[Budget re-release] The cartoon graphics really bring Zany Golf to life. Along with the odd spot effects and typically zany music, this sure is a weird bundle of fun.

[Budget re-release] Each hole has its own wacky tune and superbly animated sprites. An ideal stocking filler this Christmas.

Zany Golf is a great simulation of the strange sea-side golfing game, with all sorts of amazing obstacles to get the ball through. I particularly like the pinball screen and the multi-track green with high-powered fans which blow the ball around! The graphics and sound are both excellent, and it's amazingly addictive when you first start playing. However, the fact that there are only 16 screens makes me question its lasting appeal. Zany Golf is certainly great fun - but if you buy it, don't expect to be playing it in a month's time.

AmigaPower Play (1989)

Atari STPower Play (Mar, 1989)

Atari STThe One (Mar, 1989)
The first eight are straightforward and playable to boot, but it's only the final course that borders on difficult due to its more puzzle-solving orientated nature. It's a shame that there doesn't seem to be adequate incentive to come back after completing the nine. Zany Golf is an otherwise outstanding product.

DOSPower Play (Mar, 1989)

The holes are identical to the ST version and play the same as well. Unfortunately it won't run on CGA machines - but it does look good in EGA and VGA. It's still a little difficult calculating strength and direction, but that doesn't harm the gameplay much.

Same holes and graphics as the ST and like the other versions the disk accessing is annoyingly slow. Great fun until the nine-hole course is completed, which will not take that long.

This is graphically the most impressive of the crazy golf games. Every hole is in 3D and attractively drawn. It also has an excellent range of holes and obstacles - things like bouncing hamburgers, fans to blow the ball around and magic carpets to guide it with. There are only nine holes but each of these is very complicated. It still won't take long to exhaust, but that's crazy golf games for you.

Zany Golf on other machines was thoroughly enjoyable because of the pleasing controls and speedy response. Since the Megadrive features neither of these, you'd have to be a real golf-nut in order to glean much enjoyment from this release.

GenesisSega Does (Dec 22, 2017)
Imagine a mini-golf course where the designer had an unlimited budget and a lack of common sense, and that’s pretty much Zany Golf. You can’t help but appreciate the bizarre course design, even as your tired adult self cries out for a bit of restraint. Unfortunately, it’s this ambition that drives the game into bogey territory. In the later courses especially, it’s just too easy to hit your ball incorrectly one time and screw yourself into a game over. After a few rounds of this nonsense, you’ll be crying out for a mouse that can account for the game’s touchy mechanics. Zany Golf can be won with time and tear-soaked cheeks, but you’re better off catching zany fever on a different platform.

Looking at the game at hand, you certainly get a certain vibe from it making it believable that this was originally an unlicensed effort – the slow flow of the game and sub-par presentation sure hint at such origins. The game itself isn't that bad and at times can become fun and entertaining. At nine holes, it is a pretty short effort, which could invite for a few quick holes. But watching the screen jerk around, witnessing the ball creep along at snails pace and listening to the music eating away at your eardrums make you reach for the power button before you're halfway though. It has its moments, but overall, it's not worth the effort of hunting down.

Atari STASM (Aktueller Software Markt) (Mar, 1989)
Da weiß man, was man hat!

GenesisDefunct Games (Jun 01, 2018)
Zany Golf is one of the most half-assed games I'd ever seen. All the elements were present to make a great game of miniature golf, but development clearly stopped too soon. When an 8-bit portable game provides four times the content of a 16-bit console release, that is completely unforgivable. Pitch this one off the course and move on.
