Just Adventure (May 12, 2009)
TCM is intriguing both in its approach and execution and can be very addictive. But honestly, it would be a huge disappointment if developers with the pedigrees of Connors and Jones were to offer anything of lesser quality.

If you are a fan of story-driven games, dark mysteries and psychological tales (and don’t mind a more casual style of gameplay), you won’t need a Tarot card to know that 3 Cards to Midnight is the right game for you.

It's the same question that developers have to ask themselves when making a game, and I'm sure their answer is the same. I'm reminded of cult director Alex Cox (Repo Man, Sid & Nancy), who recently started making his movies for less than $200,000 rather than fighting through the studio system. After completing one film this way, he's said that he's never had more fun directing films, because he's no longer accountable to anyone's vision but his own, and that's worth the sacrifice in visual quality, big name stars, and special effects. He's right, and it's good to see others coming to the same conclusion. Three Cards may be a simple puzzle game for the casual audience, but it's clear that a lot of passion went into it, and that enthusiasm shows up in the work itself. They've created an accessible game with broad appeal, and while the casual audience can be a fickle mistress, this is an effort that refuses to underestimate the masses.

Three Cards to Midnight would easily be a 4-star game if it weren’t still a little rough around the edges: in addition to the quirks already noted, the music loops awkwardly, there’s no Windowed mode, and you can’t save the game in the middle of a level. As it stands, the game is a decent thriller for fans of supernatural themes, and a promising start of things to come. I’ll be looking forward to the sequel, Three Cards to Dead Time.

It is hard to say if Three Cards to Midnight has succeeded in meeting the high expectation it has generated. The story and atmosphere are very good. The puzzles are entertaining, though a bit monotonous. The game clearly targets gamers who are nostalgic for classic adventure games but are open to experiment with other genres. This is a game where the puzzles show a lot of cleverness but where eye candy has also taken on a lower priority. Three Cards to Midnight may not become a cult classic puzzle game like The 7th Guest, but it is a solid title that proves entertaining games can still be made with a lot of creativity despite only a modest budget.

There is more to come. So don’t expect everything neatly resolved. 3 Cards to Dead Time is already in development. If you like a well told story, and if you are a fan of casual games, you will probably rate 3 Cards to Midnight more highly than I did. I want far more from my game play than this offered, although not much more from a story perspective. So a very mixed blessing indeed.
