As real-life history shows, Florida's land boom was bound to crash in the mid 1920s, but only the player has the advanced knowledge that a storm is on the horizon. A Golden Wake's place as a period piece alleviates the worry that its ending outweighs Alfie Banks' journey. Rather, Banks ticks like the hand on the face of a clock, carrying players through a beautiful, and in other ways unfortunate moment in history. As a functional video game, the action stutters a little with its mini-games and doesn't offer a very significant challenge to the player. A Golden Wake interprets a rich history in its chapters and paints an image of the best and worst of the 1920s, and while its overly-easy puzzles didn't really add to the story, I felt a stronger appreciation for that era after playing through it.

And it's quite a groove at that, on the whole, that I think you'll find as I did with A Golden Wake. A big part of that comes from the wonderful instrumental soundtrack that is appropriate for the period, and the mood of the story. Voice-acting and the script are also very nicely done. (...) The artwork matches the retro gameplay style and, while I don't know much about architecture and interior design from the '20s, it felt authentic. That said, a lot of the rooms are a bit sparse on objects to either interact with or examine, but there are lots of paintings that you can select to look at for a brief, but ultimately useless, description. One other related note, during chapter transitions, a few months or even years might pass, and in those cases where you revisit an area again, sometimes little if anything at all has changed -- so you'll see the same NPCs wearing the same clothes and doing the same things, which felt a little bit lazy in an otherwise fine production.

Ultimately, A Golden Wake has grand ambitions and mostly succeeds in pulling them off. Dripping with atmosphere, it brings to life an interesting and overlooked chapter in American history that will resonate even today, and manages to look and sound great while doing it. The storytelling and gameplay aspects rub each other the wrong way at times, but the end result is a memorable experience overall. As its 5-6 hours of playtime drew to a close and the epilogue started to play, everything fell into place. The minor annoyances along the way faded from view and as I thought of Alfie I teared up a little.

A Golden Wake is very sober, very grand, but it has a lot of pitfalls, both when it comes to actual gameplay mechanics and to its story, which has a couple of misses. But overall, it offers a pleasurable and, most importantly, memorable experience, with some pretty sharp and witty writing, and a flavorful depiction of a fascinating era.

Though not the most pulse-pounding adventure on the market, A Golden Wake offers an authentic glimpse into one of the defining events of the 20th century. We see it all through the temporarily starry eyes of a man whose struggles were all too common in that time. With period-authentic aesthetics and sharp writing, this point and click will keep you enthralled from beginning to end – and maybe teach you a thing or two about history along the way.
IGN Italia (Oct 09, 2014)
Hooked Gamers (Oct 21, 2014)
The 1920s is a period rarely covered in games, but A Golden Wake is a game that takes on the challenge and, in places, succeeds. History buffs and those just after an interesting, unique story will find plenty to enjoy here, although an extra hour or so of content in which to enjoy that story would not have gone amiss. Sadly, more seasoned adventure fans looking for a new challenge will not find it here, and are instead likely to be frustrated by the patchy attempts at diversifying the gameplay.

Spazio Games (Oct 09, 2014)

Diehard GameFan (Oct 09, 2014)
A Golden Wake may not be the next great adventure game, but it is still a solid title. The main character carries the story well the presentation has its charms, and the gameplay is solid. Of particular note, the game plays out like a series of shorter chapters. This keeps the player on the right track and cuts down on the more traditional “click on everything until something happens” mentality. Adventure fans will likely enjoy this game quite well.
