Alan Wake’s American Nightmare is mechanically a better Alan Wake. The only thing holding it back is its brevity (six hours for me), but it’s highly enjoyable, especially if you loved the first game.

It doesn’t hurt that the gun play is extremely well realised, with each weapon feeling distinctive, and even, dare it be said, approaching realism. The animation also, bar the occasional ‘I’m looking at the ceiling’ conversation standby is great. Overall, American Nightmare is highly polished, with a consistently good quality in everything it does. It’s not the deepest game out there, but it strikes an admirable balance between cerebral thematic content and a pinpoint focus on action and atmosphere and the relationship between the two.

IGN (May 29, 2012)
By rights, Alan Wake's American Nightmare should be utterly underwhelming. The core game is changed not at all from its parent's lukewarm style, the story is thin and hackneyed, hell it even has live-action cutscenes. But somehow, the gameplay is challenging enough to keep you clicking that left mouse button and listening to that weird, not quite Rod Serling voice telling you to survive until morning just one more time.

At first sight, American Nightmare could be a different Alan Wake, a bit more open, somewhat more colorful, allowing a bit more time for accommodation and attachment to its characters, correcting at least a part of the original’s shortcomings. But just as its predecessor, it remains a game sentenced to struggle on the line between interaction and presentation, a space where compromises must be made by at least one of the sides, with the game proper still taking the larger hit. Because when it comes to its interaction degree, Alan Wake really doesn’t have much more than a flashlight, a gun and, occasionally, a flashbang.
GameSpot (May 31, 2012)
American Nightmare is a more streamlined affair that lacks the weight and impact of its predecessors, and is the least creepy entry in the multifaceted saga. While that's by design, the gritty action focus and scaled-back story don't jibe as well with the series' overall atmosphere. The adventure boils down to a flawed but entertaining pit stop with some cool moments to tide you over until the next proper full-length installment.
