Altitude is a shoot 'em up in which the player controls one of five airplanes, each with different abilities, in one of seven game modes. Players earn experience with which they level up, unlocking new planes and perks. Games can have up to 64 players, or can be played in skirmishes against bots.

In Team Base Destruction, each team attempts to destroy the opposing team's base while defending their own. The base can only be damaged by a bomb item that spawns on the map, so a player must fly to the enemy base carrying the bomb while his teammates defend him.

In Team Death Match, each team attempts to kill the members of the other team. The game is over when one team reaches a set number of kill or the timer runs out.

In Plane Ball, each team attempts to score points by shooting a ball into the opposing team's goal, while defending their own.

In Free For All, players compete for the highest number of kills before the timer runs out.

In 1-Life Demolition, one team, call the Infiltrators, attempts to plant a bomb in one of two bases controlled by the other team, called the Defenders. If the bomb is successfully planted, the Infiltrators win; if it is defused, the Defenders win. Each player has only one life per round, so if all players on a team die, the opposing team wins.

In 1-Life Death Match, players are divided into two teams, with each player having only one life. The team that survives wins.

In 1-Life Team Base Destruction, play proceeds as in Team Base Destruction, but each player has only one life, and only one bomb hit is necessary to destroy a base. Play ends when either team's base is destroyed, or if all players on a team are dead.

Altitude has colorful, cartoon-like graphics, 63 official maps, and a map editor to allow the creation of custom maps. Additionally, by promoting the game to others, players can earn Community Points which can be used to purchase skins for their planes and custom emblems.
