This carefully woven horror adventure sucks the player into its terrifying clutches, presenting fear-drenched gameplay and a nerve-crushing atmosphere that you could slice. Innovative interaction and lovely visuals work with the outstanding sound direction to create a genuinely terrifying experience that will leave hands shaking and hearts pounding, without resorting to cheap scares. Well paced, expertly crafted, and nerve-shredding to the extreme, despite a few tiny niggles, the game is an underground hit in the making.
Game Critics (Nov 21, 2010)
Amnesia: The Dark Descent is a game that I both love and hate simultaneously. I don't have the stomach for most horror (hell, I watched 20 minutes of Hostel once and had to turn it off) but I can't help but appreciate a game that does what it's trying to do, and does it so well. The fact that it was able to reduce me to a jumpy, gasping mass of mustached man more hesitant to open doors after playing makes me love it for what it is, while at the same time I honestly dread the thought of playing it again. It was without a doubt one of the most difficult, draining, and stressful gaming experiences I have ever had, but it's also an absolute masterpiece.
Game Shark (Sep 24, 2010)
In any case, Amnesia: The Dark Descent is an unforgettable survival/horror experience, one that should not be missed. With an appropriately eerie setting, an interesting story, multiple endings and some extremely shrewd sound design, it'll grab hold of you and won't let go until at least one of its surprising conclusions.
Thus I am pleased to award Amnesia: The Dark Descent The Adrenaline Vault’s coveted Seal of Excellence. Best played slowly and in short chunks, the game’s sense of isolated helplessness doesn’t go away. This offering succeeds much better than the Penumbra series did in distilling the horror experience into its purest form, making the viewer’s imagination—aided by sound effects and the scarcity of light—do most of the work. So it is with absolutely no trepidation that I highly recommend its purchase: if you can play this game and don’t get frightened, then nothing will scare you.
Gamernode (Sep 08, 2010)
Reminds us how interactivity, perspective, and player disempowerment can be highly engaging, and that a slow creep of fear with abrupt spikes of terror is ultimately the essence of the horror experience.
Game Arena (Sep 14, 2010)
The sense of dread washing over you as you crouch in a corner in almost total darkness with your vision swimming, heart pounding and breath comes in short gasps as a humanoid creature with flayed skin instead of a jaw stands just metres away from you is more intense than any other video game has managed and if you even marginally enjoy the horror genre you owe it to yourself to pick it up.
ComputerGames.ro (Sep 14, 2010)
Amnesia is an incredibly terrifying game, whose merits become more spectacular as its tools are more rudimentary, the constant sensation of fear and instability equaled only by Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. Frictional made an interactive adventure that always pushes you to descend deeper and deeper towards the heart of evil, balancing the exploration of your own mind towards the point of maximum dementia with the exploration of a castle perhaps older than we are initially led to believe...
Game Informer Magazine (Sep 08, 2010)
If Resident Evil is Aliens, Amnesia is Alien. Frictional Games has created something wholly unlike the traditional horror game. Amnesia shows us by example that gaming has entirely new realms to explore. The price of admission is only $20 through your digital retailer of choice. Do the right thing.
Gamers' Temple, The (Nov 09, 2010)
Amnesia: The Dark Descent is the Exorcist of horror games, it will scare you and make you not real thrilled to go to sleep.
Realm of Gaming (Oct 30, 2013)
After my first substantial session with Amnesia: The Dark Descent, I didn't want to walk through my dark house and go to bed. I wanted to stay where the light was down in the family room. Then I remembered that light attracts Gatherers, which made me want to walk through the darkness... but I was too terrified to do so, and therefore wanted to stay in the light... which is where the Gatherers would find me, so.... You can see what the kind of madness a game like this can spin. Conventionally speaking, Amnesia is your standard adventure game with the occasional puzzles. What makes it truly worthwhile to visit is its scare factor, which remains solid throughout the experience.
GamesCollection (Sep 02, 2012)
Rely on Horror (Sep 08, 2010)
Amnesia offers an amazing survival-horror experience on the PC; a console that rarely gets any love from the genre. As gamers, it’s rare that you see such a top-quality game for such a good value, as well.
Cheat Code Central (Sep 22, 2010)
If you’re going to play Amnesia: The Dark Descent in the evening, with the lights out and headphones on, make sure the house is empty. Should someone come up behind and tap you on the shoulder it could be game over. You’ve been warned.
ActionTrip (Oct 07, 2010)
This is a classic first-person survival horror game, spooky enough to frighten almost any player. 'Spooky' doesn't quite cover it. Some scenes in the game will send shivers down your spine. So, 'terrifying' would be the best word.
Worth Playing (Jan 25, 2011)
Amnesia's fright-filled journey into darkness, both literally and figuratively, is one of those gratifying reminders that our favorite hobby doesn't have to be driven by body count, although there are plenty of other things in the game to address that metric from a different angle. It's a welcome, cold splash of terror that anyone with a pulse should try out.
Destructoid (Sep 30, 2010)
Amnesia: The Dark Descent, developed on a shoestring budget by five Swedes, is a rare game that outshines (or rather, out-scares) the high-end, high-budget, triple-A titles that so often lay claim to the horror game mantle.
Thunderbolt Games (Jan 28, 2011)
At around eight hours, Amnesia: The Dark Descent isn’t a particularly lengthy game, and there’s no real reason to go back. But despite its lack of replayability, that first playthrough is guaranteed to stick with you long after you’ve stepped away from the keyboard. This is a survival horror game that doesn’t rely on cheap jump scares or over-exuberant gore to scare the player. It’s refreshingly methodical in its frights, building a malevolent presence with fantastic atmosphere that’s more chilling than any other game before it. At times it’s a struggle to play purely because of how scary it can be, and it’s not often you can say that about a video game. Just remember: lights off, headphones on, and try not to go insane.
Gamer Limit (Sep 09, 2010)
Amnesia: The Dark Descent is by far the best horror game I’ve ever played. Everything from the story to the mood of the game all works towards a fantastically eerie thesis. As someone who considers himself a connoisseur of spooky things, I feel confident in recommending this title to anyone who likes the horror genre. I usually don’t scare too easy, but when playing this game I found myself gritting my teeth and breaking out into cold sweats every time I had to venture into the darkness. On a more philosophical level, I am amazed at how Frictional Games is able to use the medium of a videogame to enhance the horror story experience.
Adventure Gamers (Sep 08, 2010)
Not for the faint of heart, this gothic horror adventure is a relentlessly intense and terrifying experience from start to finish.
Hooked Gamers (Sep 18, 2010)
Amnesia: The Dark Descent is pure, unrelenting survival horror. It’s a shame it’s not on consoles too, but if you’ve got a PC that can run it and don’t mind being scared out of your wits, then this one is for you. Just have a clean pair of underpants ready.
Gameplay (Benelux) (Oct 29, 2010)
PC Gamer (Sep 06, 2010)
Despite its title, Amnesia remembers what the blockbusters of survival horror seem to have forgotten: how to horrify.
Everyeye.it (Sep 09, 2010)
GameSpot (Sep 30, 2010)
Amnesia: The Dark Descent is undoubtedly going to take a place among the most frightening horror games ever made. It is a touch short, at maybe six or so hours of gameplay, although you can't gripe too much about that given the cheap $20 price tag as an online download. Regardless of length, this is one uncanny, unsettling, and just plain old scary experience, especially with the lights out and your headphones on.
Adventure Corner (Sep 17, 2010)
Wahnsinn!
IGN (Sep 03, 2010)
This is one of the scariest games in recent memory. The loading screen recommends you turn the lights off and play with headphones, something I'll strongly echo. Amnesia: The Dark Descent's puzzles aren't especially impressive and the voice acting can range from convincing to goofy, but the atmosphere Frictional has infused into the experience is as powerful as they come. It's a tale of terror that's menacing and disturbing from the very first moments, and only amplifies the further you progress. Any fan of horror, every Lovecraft fan, and any with even a hint of curiosity should give Amnesia a shot. Few games are able to conjure up an atmosphere this genuinely frightening.
GreatGamer.Ru (Sep 20, 2010)
Just Adventure (Apr 16, 2011)
Not many games can play with your emotions as skillfully as this one. The sense of something watching every move you make along with not knowing what will happen to you adds value to the gameplay. It’s too bad the good old point-and-click system cannot handle everything within this game.
Absolute Games (AG.ru) (Dec 28, 2010)
Amnesia: The Dark Descent,
PC Games (Germany) (Sep, 2010)
Games TM (Sep 30, 2010)
Graphically it does look a bit dated, but when a horror story is told and paced this well you really don't need the bloody edge of graphics technology to keep you pinned to the edge of your seat.
Hellbored (Oct 19, 2010)
Giving this game a score out of 10 feels slightly redundant. The designers haven't set out to compete with any traditional FPS games, so there's little to compare it to save Frictional's earlier efforts and maybe Portal. The graphics still have a certain indie sensibility to them, but they're streets ahead of even some mainstream titles. All in all, Amnesia seems like the game Frictional have been trying to create for years, and it would be a real pity for it to be ignored.
Indius (Jan 16, 2012)
Overall, Amnesia: The Dark Descent is a great horror game. As an adventure game, it can admittedly sometimes fall flat, with the puzzles being fairly straightforward and the story somewhat generic. Daniel is also a protagonist that does not endear quite as much as he first appears, begging the question of why he is not left as a silent protagonist. However, as a survival horror game, it may very well be the scariest game ever made. Although not for the faint of heart (and far too scary for my own personal liking), it undoubtedly achieves the pure terror it sets out to evoke. Interested gamers are advised to approach Amnesia: The Dark Descent with caution... and a generous supply of tinderboxes and lantern oil.
Cheat Happens (Apr 29, 2011)
It may not look as pretty as the other survival horror games on the market, and it may not get off to a fast start, but sticking with Amnesia: The Dark Descent is strongly advised, as the further you get into the game, the more frightening it gets. It's a sensory assault, intent on getting you out of your seat, and your comfort zone - Amnesia: The Dark Descent is a truly exceptional title.
Frictional Games deserves accolades for making an affordable game ($20) and not deviating from their stated purpose of creating immersion and dread within the player. Furthermore, they accomplish their task with little more than amazing sound production and a solid story. Finally, Amnesia just does countless little things right, each of which made me feel more vulnerable. I would mention them, but like the choicest meat, they are best when fresh.
Gamereactor (Sweden) (Nov 15, 2010)
Gamer.no (Sep 10, 2010)
Amnesia: The Dark Descent er skummelt. Fryktelig, fryktelig skummelt.
Eurogamer.it (Sep 14, 2010)
Disturbante.
Gamereactor (Denmark) (Sep 06, 2010)
Eurogamer.net (UK) (Sep 06, 2010)
Fans of horror gaming should definitely have Amnesia: The Dark Descent in their lives. It's a brave experiment in the genre, a more solid package than the Penumbra games and stops at nothing to make you truly, deeply uncomfortable. And after a hard day at school or the office, isn't that all we really want?
Gamers Daily News (Apr 29, 2011)
Amnesia is a cost effective experience. For a small sum you get to wander through a world that is both darkly enchanting and suspenseful. It’s short overall length and below average puzzles hold back what could be a defining masterpiece.
Game Critics (Nov 01, 2011)
Even though Amnesia failed to keep me afraid for the entire duration of my time with it, I still appreciated the illusion that Frictional Games worked hard to create, and I think anyone that likes horror games or just likes to be scared will love Amnesia. Fair warning, though: once the curtain of fear is pulled away to reveal the old con artist working the gears behind, it can't be ignored afterward.
AusGamers (Sep 14, 2010)
A lot of love has been sunk into this project from a small development team, and whilst there are some technical bumps along the way, the result is a sophisticated brain frazzling experience that injects a significant amount of satisfaction on completion.
Gaming since 198x (Nov 06, 2010)
Rock, Paper, Shotgun (Sep 07, 2010)
That this was made by a five-man team who built their own engine is bewildering. At around ten hours long, that it’s £13 (and discounted currently to pre-order for tomorrow’s release on Steam, GamersGate, and presumably elsewhere) is amazing value. If you pre-ordered it, you can start pre-loading now via Frictional’s site. I cannot recommend it enough. So long as you don’t mind being utterly bloody terrified.
