If you relished the thought of creating an ever winding gauntlet of fury to be unleashed upon your opponents, A:WE may not fulfill that desire. It will however, provide you with an alternative viewpoint to an often emulated genre that is packed with strategy and excitement, and looks and plays like a well-established AAA studio release.

Instead of building towers to force units through a path, you create a path for units to destroy towers. And by doing so, 11 bit Studios has created one of the most enjoyable strategy games in recent history.

Anomaly Warzone Earth is a great game and proof that variety can still be found in a genre as stale as the tower defense one. It offers quite a serious challenge, keeps you on your toes and demands not just strategic thinking but also quick reactions on the fly. If you hunger for something small that will keep you entertained through its single-player campaign as well as through some relatively entertaining skirmish modes, then you won't make a mistake with Anomaly Warzone Earth.

Anomaly: Warzone Earth's fresh perspective on the traditional tower defense setup makes for an exciting new entry in the genre, exploring familiar gameplay from an entirely different angle makes the action in Anomaly: Warzone Earth even more exciting. It's surprising how much of a difference a few simple tweaks can make toward revitalizing a genre that has long grown stale for some players. Being able to think strategically while under fire is a must in Anomaly: Warzone Earth, and the many twists that pop up along the winding road to victory make this game a winner.

Anomaly: Warzone Earth, then, is like the double negative of tower defence games. Rather than place down towers to stop an incoming convoy, you are the convoy. Roles are reversed, and with it strategies flip to suit the role. It's a daunting challenge, but one that proves an absolute breath of fresh air, with a gorgeous amount of polish and innovation drummed through the game's very core. It's hard to believe that this is an indie title, such is the flair emanating constantly from every twist and turn.

Tower defense games have quickly gone from being an exciting new sub-genre to possibly being the most oversaturated type of strategy game there is. So it’s always nice to find a game that does something new with the formula. And that’s just what Anomaly: Warzone Earth does. It’s game that has you taking on the role of the offensive force, instead of building up defenses; this significantly changes the feel of the game, turning it into something approaching a simplified RTS.

Mit Anomaly: Warzone Earth demonstrieren die Entwickler von den 11 bit Studios, dass das Tower Defense-Konzept auch umgekehrt funktioniert. Die Mischung aus taktischer Routenplanung, Truppenmanagement und Einsatz von Power-Ups durch den Kommandanten funktioniert wirklich gut und lässt sich vortrefflich steuern. Gerade das Auffinden der idealen Route durch die Geschütztürme in den Häuserlandschaften gleicht einem kleinen Puzzlespiel mit taktischen Kampfaspekten, die allerdings noch etwas tiefer gehen könnten. Gut wird das Spiel aber erst durch die Missionen in der Kampagne, die sich um Abwechslung bemüht zeigen und erstaunlich viel aus dem Konzept herausholen. Und für knapp zehn Euro ist der Umfang von 14 Missionen plus zwei Szenarios wirklich fair. Abgesehen davon, dass ich mir etwas reichhaltigere taktische Möglichkeiten und mehr Vielfalt bei den Einheiten gewünscht hätte, ist die "Tower Offense" rundum gelungen und eine lohnende Alternative für Turmbauer.
Ultimately what I felt I got from Anomaly was a solid campaign which lasted me somewhere between 3-5 hours, and that’s probably what any seasoned player of tower defense/offense will get as well. If you lack any experience in the genre I’d still recommend this game to you: the learning curve is very gentle, too gentle in my opinion, but here is a fine experience to hone your skills at. The first half of it was average to above average in terms of enjoyment and challenge, while the latter half was nothing short of exemplary. The gameplay itself is ace, the few talking heads who bark instructions and whatnot do a fine job, even if a bit campy at times, and all around Anomaly feels like a totally professional work.

Thanks to the very self-conscious price of 9,99 Euros, you can’t really hold the length against Anomaly, because cost-efficiency didn’t get left out. So I can only encourage its purchase if you’re into sweet small deals with sweet small prices in sweet small packages.

Once I queued up the download for Anomaly: Warzone Earth, I decided to take a look at what the game was going to offer me and I was immediately relieved as this was clearly not a cookie cutter tower defense game. 11bit Studios has flipped the genre on it’s head and put the player in the roll of the invader. Anomaly is a unique combination of a tower-defense with some RTS-like elements. Much to my surprise (and joy), Anomaly: Warzone Earth is a hell of a lot of fun.

The design behind Anomaly must be commended: it seems to have been built very methodically on a very basic foundation with simple but very fun features thrown on top, one by one. In this respect, it feels like a retro game that sticks to the roots of what makes games fun while offering pleasing aesthetics and modernized mechanics and interfaces to appease today's gamer. Taken as such, it's an extremely impressive debut title, and at $8.99/$9.99, a must-have for anyone remotely interested in strategy games.

Anomaly: Warzone Earth is a clever twist on tower defense that will rope back in gamers that think they’ve had enough of the well-worn formula. The balancing act between action and strategy is nicely tuned. Even when the firefights are ferocious, you’re still thinking about adjusting routes and how to smartly deploy precious power-ups so you don’t run dry later in the mission. And to top it all off, Anomaly’s good story and great locations give you constant reasons to fight.

Anomaly is a reversal of the standard tower defence format: the evil, faceless aliens place towers along a path, and your troops attempt to survive their gauntlet. The switcheroo could be considered a gimmick if the developers at 11 bit studios weren't so clever about it. They haven't simply swapped roles; they've re-engineered the form.

Overall, the strategy and gaming elements are there, and the mechanics are smooth. Visually, Anomaly‘s graphics are marvelously rendered, and reliably solid. If the game had spent a bit more time refining its narrative, it would verge on exceptional. As it stands, Anomaly: Warzone Earth is a consistently enjoyable game…all except for that last thirty minutes.

Ich habe mit Defense Grid oder Plants vs. Zombies mehr Zeit verbracht als mit den meisten Blockbustern der letzten Jahre zusammen. Anomaly: Warzone Earth gibt mir nun endlich die Gelegenheit, den Spieß umzudrehen – alleine das ist mir die mageren 10 Euro Kaufpreis schon wert. Dass der Indie-Titel zudem bei der Präsentation, bei der Bedienung und beimMissionsdesign punktet, erstaunt umso mehr. Lediglich der Umfang und der Wiederspielwert können mit den Genre-Größen Defense Grid und Plants vs. Zombies nicht mithalten. Aber das sollte keinen Tower Defense-Fan davon abhalten, mal ein wenig Tower Offense zu betreiben.

Those who have had their fill of tower defence games or feel there's nothing new to add to the genre owe it to themselves to play this, as it changes the formula in a way that keeps the game feeling wholly unique. However, there are flaws present within the game that bring down its overall quality and, in some cases, act as a detriment to your enjoyment. Anomaly: Warzone Earth does more right than it does wrong and serves as an amazing example of how to approach a genre and bring something unlike anything else to the table. Whether you'll want to finish the meal out is another matter entirely, but for all it does right and all it does wrong, it's unlikely that you're going to forget it for a while.

Now we can conjure a conclusion: I would conclude, spining the wheels on the Conclud-o-matic 2000, that this a rather decent budget title. Just about the appropriate sort of length to digest in a couple of sittings, with the right kind of “oh this is a bit different” to make you feel like life isn’t all the same action RPG. Anomaly isn’t exactly going to fundamentally change our collective consciousness, and I’d be surprised if anyone bothered to copy or remember it, but it’s that kind of pleasant challenge – like say Defense Grid – that manages to be both well-presented and consistent. And that makes for a satisfied Jim Rossignol. Well done, I say.
