At the moment though: the missions are severely lacking, the weapons are too basic, there’s a big disconnect between story and game, and having so many loading screens (especially with the Forge) is annoying. In general there’s just a severe lack of content, and forcing players to grind what should be optional achievements instead was a terrible stopgap solution. If you get Anthem now, you’ll have fun for a little while… but then you’ll be waiting for the real game to start.

Anthem is a game that I wanted to like more than I did, given its fantastic concept and great core gameplay. Anthem should have been a winner, but it’s turning out to be just another live service with nothing to stand out from the competition.

Anthem comes closer to succeeding as a co-op action RPG than it does as a story-focused game, but only does so after a trying grind through its repetitive main quests. And even at that, its standout elements like the flashy combat and mechanically rich bosses still have a long way to go in terms of polish, variety, and balance. I have hope that with time BioWare can capitalize on its strengths and turn Anthem into something worth investing all these hours into, but all indications are there’s a lot of work to be done to reach that point.
PC Games (Germany) (Feb 25, 2019)

GameSpot (Feb 25, 2019)
Anthem has good ideas, but it struggles significantly with the execution. It's a co-op game that works best with no one talking; it buries genuinely interesting character moments and puts its most incomprehensible story bits at the forefront; its combat is exciting until you get to the boss fights and find your wings have been clipped. Even the simple, exhilarating act of flying is frequently interrupted by the limitations of your javelin, and you never quite shake that feeling of disappointment--of knowing, throughout the good parts of Anthem, that you'll inevitably come crashing back down.
PC Gamer (Feb 21, 2019)
Anthem's disjointed story, boring loot, repetitive missions, and shallow endgame are all disappointing. At least it's pretty.
RPG Site (Feb 23, 2019)
I hope the studio takes the fantastic facial animation technology, upgraded visuals, excellent quality of music on display here and implements it in whatever they do next. As for the rest, future games are better off without. No matter how much time has passed since you last heard your country’s national anthem, it’s a melody you don’t tend to forget. Perhaps your memory has grown fuzzy at the words, but your body, mind and soul will identify with some part of it for one reason or another. Anthem has sadly not resonated with any part of me, and no matter how much time passes, I don’t think this will change.
Nivelul2 (Mar 13, 2019)
Niche Gamer (Feb 24, 2019)
There was a part of me that really hoped this would be Bioware’s comeback, but that just wasn’t meant to be. Anthem doesn’t just not reach the bar set by others, it doesn’t even attempt to reach for it.
Anthem offers near unlimited potential, with certain features, taken separately, representing a marvel in design. Combined together and it proves to have a lot of style but very little substance.
GamesRadar (Feb 22, 2019)
Anthem is ultimately severely flawed, and very unfinished. There's half a good game in there, but it doesn't do enough to diminish the overall feeling of emptiness and repetition.
PC World (Feb 22, 2019)
All I can do is review the game I was given though, and the game I was given is mediocre. Functional? Sure. Flashy? Absolutely. But it’s a puddle disguised as a lake, a universe with so much potential that makes good on almost none of it. To make matters worse, I don’t think the core loop is interesting enough to keep me playing. The tougher end-game enemies are so damn spongy, and the shooting isn’t nearly as tight or as punchy as Destiny, a game that kept me playing long past the point I’d exhausted its similarly dreadful story. I’m just not having a good time with Anthem, nor do I feel like there’s anything left to discover aside from a handful of vaguely interesting Masterwork effects.
Edge (May, 2019)
(...) at launch, the game's biggest problems are the bugs: the aforementioned absent ending, the crashes and performance hitches, and on PS4 at least, the ability to forcibly reboot your entire console, a bug of such frightening might and reach that you have to sort of respect it. There's not much that isn't fixable, but equally there's little that's excusable. We may be used by now to the idea that a game of this type is never really complete; that the picture today will be very different in a year, and will have vastly changed again after another 12 months. But that does not mean you get to launch a mess, then call the clean-up operation progress. The game's flying mechanic may be a delight; raining elemental chaos down on enemy goons, a pleasure. Yet the lasting impression is of a game that, for all its charms and potential, simply wasn't quite ready for takeoff - and that what might have been won't arrive for a couple of years yet.
Giant Bomb (Mar 01, 2019)
Despite my litany of complaints, I did have some fun zooming around in some of Anthem's grander combat situations--when everything comes together and you're flying to and fro, coordinating your tactics with your friends (which, frankly, makes any game better), you can see how good an Anthem with all of these rough edges sanded down could be. And there are a few ideas here, like creating more combat and traversal mechanics around flight, that deserve more attention than they get in the game that's on shelves right now. But Anthem needs more than just new content. A lot of work needs to be done on a wide variety of the game's fundamental elements before it can join the ranks of other redeemed loot games like Diablo III, Destiny, and The Division. Whether EA will give BioWare the latitude to overhaul the parts of the game that need it--and whether it's even technically feasible for them to do that in the first place--are questions with uncertain answers.
