games xtreme (Jul 10, 2002)
I've been waiting for a decent RPG fix to come along that doesn't follow the traditional D&D standard that so many adhere to in more recent releases, and I have found the fix in Arcanum. If this game is available in your area, and you've a craving for some old-fashioned CRPG goodness, pick it up.
Mania (Sep 18, 2001)
All in all, Arcanum offers some excellent innovations in the area of RPG's. If you are one of those freaks who doesn't like to read through enough dialogue to fill several novel's, then I don't recommend any RPG, let alone one this complex and involved. However if you've played through the FINAL FANTASY series the same number of years that you have been alive, ARCANUM is a wonderful example of the genre.
Gamezilla (Aug 24, 2001)
An excellent, excellent game! Somewhat marred by a bulky interface, Arcanum is nevertheless a breath of fresh air in the RPG genre, with highly rendered graphics, huge playing fields, and an excellent experience system allowing unprecedented freedom of development, not to mention the interesting storyline. All die-hard RPG addicts will need to add this one to their collection, and other fantasy enthusiasts as well. The interface brings the rating down to a low 90’s score, but it’s still well worth checking out.
Arcanum, for so many reasons, has to be considered the finest of all RPG games available for the PC. On so many levels it is as good as Baldur's Gate 2 and Planescape Torment but it is the sheer quality of the character creation system and the inclusion of editing software that effectively enables you to create your own RPG that makes Arcanum the RPG to own at present.
Old PC Gaming (Jul 18, 2016)
In light of its non-linear nature, the game does an excellent job at keeping you from wandering aimlessly (though you can do that if you want) or losing track of your overall goals. The length of the game varies greatly depending on how you play it, but it's not a short game by any metric, and the degree to which it manages to sustain interest and present new challenges is impressive. The game even gives you a multiplayer mode, along with a special multiplayer scenario and the complete game editor (so you can create your own). It's the gift that keeps on giving. You stop worrying about the game's minor quirks and start marveling at the story and setting that unfolds before you.
Legendra (Aug 01, 2009)
GameZone (Aug 30, 2001)
Arcanum is so huge that I can see how some gamers would shy away from playing it. All the choices and complexities do have a higher learning curve than most games, but it is absolutely worth it. Troika has included pre-created characters and default level systems so the casual gamer won't have to bother with the sometimes overwhelming choices if they don't wish. Once you jump in, and get the hang of the controls the story will draw you in, and you'll be hooked. This one will be on your PC for months.
Absolute Games (AG.ru) (Jul 06, 2001)
As an RPG lover, I would like to give kudos to Troika and Sierra for designing a game and publishing a game that truly is designed for a select group of people. Too often budgets are such these days that all games are aimed at the "mainstream" population, and end up watered down versions of their original ideas. Arcanum pulls no punches. It's a RPG that will challenge even expert RPGers. For that and for providing a lovely reality-forgetting experience, I award Arcanum 4 1/2 GiN Gems for their treasure chest with just a slight deduction for a few gameplay flaws.
PC Gamer (Oct, 2001)
Forget Baldur's Gate and Diablo. This game offers just as much fun, and more freedom.
GameSpy (Jul, 2001)
There is little argument that Fallout and Fallout 2 were two of the best RPGs ever produced. Not only did they both provide a great gaming experience, they also cast aside many of the conventions of the typical RPG and had the player fighting their way across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Many of the folks responsible for the Fallout games went out and formed their own development house -- Troika Games -- and the result is Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura. Just like the Fallout series, Arcanum ignores many of the conventions of the RPG genre and the result is an amazing, if slightly buggy, game.
ActionTrip (Aug 28, 2001)
Arcanum is one of the greatest surprises this year in spite of all press and on-line announcements it got. Troika Studios is actually comprised of the team that developed the original Fallout -- Jason Anderson, Leonard Boyarsky and Tim Cain, and a group of skilful designers. This would be a sufficient recommendation for any game. Just after you finished Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale expansion packs, Arcanum is there to take a couple of dozen hours of your life and give you some good Role Play to boot.
Gamigo (Jul 27, 2001)
IGN (Aug 24, 2001)
Arcanum isn't perfect by any means, but is more than the average of its parts, and even with a few problematic bugs, visual shortcomings, and occasional choppy performance, Arcanum is a delightful RPG with plenty to offer to those of you looking for a detailed storyline, rich atmosphere, and one of the best character development systems ever. It's good to see that the RPG tradition is still alive. I only hope that Arcanum sells well so we can continue to see RPGs like this in the future.
RPGFan (Jun, 2002)
Arcanum really is a fun game to play despite its faults. While these faults do keep the game from becoming epic, they certainly do not make the game unplayable. It will take quite a few hours of time to play, especially if you plan to enjoy the different uses of the distinct characters, and the majority of your play hours will be well spent. While I cannot guarantee that Arcanum will be a blockbuster for everyone, it certainly has wide enough appeal to stimulate a general audience. Arcanum has a very interesting premise whose execution could use a facelift, but is well done nonetheless. For anyone looking for a role-playing game on the PC, this is a definite recommendation.
NZGamer (Apr 02, 2004)
Imagine a place of wonder, where magick and technology coexist in an uneasy balance, and an adventurer might just as easily wield a flintlock pistol as a flaming sword. A place where great industrial cities house castle keeps and factories, home to Dwarves, Humans, Orcs and Elves alike. A place of ancient runes and steamworks, of magick and machines, of sorcery and science. Welcome to the land of Arcanum.
RPGFan (Jun 18, 2002)
While by no means a horrible game, Arcanum doesn't come close to living up to the hype that was surrounding it upon its release. However, if you have the patience to look past the flaws and dig under the surface, you'll find an enjoyable adventure underneath. If you don't think you can deal with the game's weaknesses, stick with Black Isle's games for a similar, yet much superior, experience.
Game Vortex (Nov 24, 2002)
It may not be the prettiest game you'll ever play, and it certainly isn't the easiest to get into or control, but Arcanum offers enough old-school RPG goodness to make up for its flaws for any fan of the genre. If you don't mind having to fight with the game a bit, you'll find an absolutely brilliant setting and enough character to keep you smirking for weeks. Casual RPGers should probably stay away, as the learning curve is high and the time-investment lengthy; those who don't mind sitting down for a truly giant gaming meal will find themselves enthralled by the steampunk fantasy world of Arcanum.

RPGDOT (Sep 17, 2001)
As with friends, you may take some time to fall in love with Arcanum. It isn't love at first sight, but once you accept the lowdowns and heights of this game, it will be an intense relationship. It might not be suited for the casual gamer, but it offers a lot for those who appreciate depth and atmosphere. Buy it? Yes. Buy it.
Mygamer.com (Sep 09, 2004)
If you can see past the gritty surface of Arcanum you will discover a game with possibly the single most incredible storyline, quest system, and character-dynamic world featured in any RPG to date. I remember the first time I played Arcanum, I thought it was total garbage, but once I understood the inner workings of the character dynamics and the magnificent storyline tied beautifully to the game world - well, I couldn't put it down. Since the game is different virtually every time you play, the replay value is immeasurable due to the endless possibility of character types, via mixing and matching. A mod system and mod-based multiplayer can also add to the value of the game if you can find some other Arcanum players who are interested in ‘team-bashing'. Arcanum is a superior purchase, reminiscent of the combat style seen in Diablo 2 combined with a Final Fantasy 3 caliber storyline. It's a must for absolutely any RPG fan.
PCMag.com (Nov 13, 2001)
What would happen if the industrial revolution hit a world of elves, dwarves, magic rings, and enchanted swords? That's Arcanum, where you might face a dwarf with a repeater rifle. The game world is huge, the story is strong, and players can participate in many side quests; graphics are a little dated. Give yourself time to learn it.
Gamekult (Sep 05, 2001)
Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura is reminiscent of Shadowrun, full of the adventure and intrigue. New features and a solid storyline should keep even the most veteran players busy for quite sometime. While the game isn't flawless, it surpasses most competitors in the genre, and holds up well in the field of fantasy adventuring.
Withingames (Oct 29, 2001)
Warum also keine 100% geben?
Sorry Diablo, sorry Baldur's... mamy nowego króla. Przynajmniej pierwszych 9 miesięcy tego roku.
Quandary (Sep, 2002)
So, there you have it. Sorry that all took a while to explain, but there's a lot to do in the world of Arcanum. I've played it four times through so far with widely varied character types, and though there is a certain familiarity about the proceedings each time you play, there are also a lot of new things to discover. While not excelling in the graphics department, and despite favouring the magick/melee style player over the gun-toting technologist, I still rate Arcanum as one of my favourite games. For me, it's the game play that really counts, and Arcanum has bucketloads of that!
GamePro (US) (Aug 21, 2001)
So is Arcanum worth the trip? Yes, indeed, but only if you've got lots of techno-tolerance and time. There truly is a deep, rewarding, and splendiferous RPG behind Arcanum's dated, clunky machina, but only the most intrepid RPG fanatics will have the patience to dig it out.
Game Over Online (Sep 10, 2001)
Overall, I feel like I should be in one of those old beer commercials where one side of the room is shouting “Great game!” and the other side is shouting “Crappy engine!” The punch line now, as in the beer commercials, is that both sides are right (or at least they’re right here; your taste may vary with the beer), and Arcanum is both a good game and a bad game depending on the part of it you want to focus on. I thought the gameplay was good enough to make up for the deficient engine, and I found Arcanum to be a worthy successor to the Fallout series.
From a Christian perspective this game uses magic (it's in the title: Magick), and can have some dark areas. When you create your character you can choose their strengths, weaknesses, and other attributes. You can also choose their past. Some are funny like, raised by snake handlers, but others are dark like raised by witches etc. Another thing that disappointed me was the language. The word D*mn. Was used a couple times. The graphics are OK, no 3D rendering from what I can tell. The sound effects were good. Game play is fun on single player. I did not see a multiplayer option in the demo, it will be available in the final. This game is designed to run on Windows 9X, however I did run it on 2000 and it does work. The only thing I noticed was a slow down when left in combat mode for a while. The game was stable, no crashes
Gameguru Mania (Aug 22, 2001)
Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magick Obscura (Arcanum) is the first title by Troika Games, a company founded by three of the key people behind Black Isle's post-apocalyptic isometric RPG, Fallout. No wonder, Arcanum is in some ways very much like Fallout, but at the same time it is a new world rich in atmosphere and new ideas. Arcanum is set in a steam punk world in the mid 19th century. Technology and magic have reached an unstable equilibrium, with technology being on the rise in the last 70 years, and magic being in decline from its once penultimate position in the world.
Game Chronicles (Sep 20, 2001)
The stylish atmosphere and unique mix of technology and magic makes for one of the most interesting games in the genre. The vast possibilities of the character generator alone, not to mention the dynamically changing story gives this game unlimited potential and infinite replayability. If you like RPG's then you are going to love Arcanum.
PC Games (Germany) (Aug 25, 2001)
So was will ich mir eigentlich nicht antun.
Gamers' Temple, The (Apr 05, 2002)
Despite a few annoyances and gameplay issues, Arcanum can be fun to play. It's unique setting and departure from more traditional RPG elements will certainly endear it to many players.
GameStar (Germany) (Aug, 2001)
Arcanum is far from a perfect game, but it’s still a rare gem. Anyone who is a serious RPG fan will probably love this game, if for no other reason than to see an elf toting around a flame thrower. If you’re a casual gamer looking for some fun, Arcanum might be worth your time, provided you can manage to get past the game’s combat and visual issues.
GameSpot (Aug 21, 2001)
Arcanum is a traditional fantasy role-playing game with several distinctive traits, including a great premise and a nonlinear, open-ended role-playing system. But the game's broad design brings with it a host of problems that may not be easy for you to get past. Three years in the making, Arcanum is the fledgling effort of Troika Games, a small studio founded by several key members of the team that created Fallout-- Interplay's memorable, highly enjoyable postapocalyptic role-playing game--back in 1997. Arcanum bears many noticeable similarities to Fallout. Like its predecessor, it gives you plenty of freedom within its open-ended world--the freedom to approach the game's many challenges by using a variety of courses of action, from civil to brutal.
GameBanshee (Feb 21, 2005)
The game has some distinctive features that make it unique. Granted, it will not appeal to everyone, but as an older game, it's relatively cheap ! I think I paid 10 bucks for it. At that price, you've got nothing to lose and I think that it will inspire many true RPG fans out there with its creativity and depth. For a fan of the shinier and newer games, you're probably not missing out on anything earth-shaking. But for a fan of the genre and real role-playing, the game is worth playing, and once played, worth playing again.
Arcanum is ultimately an entertaining title, but one with enough quirks to prevent it from attaining true RPG greatness. The product’s impressive scope and challenge mixed with a non-traditional technological background will no doubt draw RPG fans into its fold. At the same time, Arcanum‘s traditional graphics, crowded interface, and poor multiplayer may keep some from investing their time in it. Many hardcore and casual RPG enthusiasts looking for an involved storyline and a different take on the genre should be satisfied with this game, but three years after the last Fallout release, I was expecting that like the land of Arcanum, this title could get more with the times.
As it is, though, you find yourself wanting to play due to all the great elements, yet hate yourself for continuing to tolerate such cumbersome controls. Whether you'll actually like the game or not depends which side of the fence you lean towards.
ESC Magazine (Sep 28, 2001)
As it stands, Arcanum is an exercise in frustration. There are so many moments when you know it can be a better game than it is, so many times when you're expecting it to break out and show you what it can really do, that you can't help being disappointed by the experience. But the both the studio and the system they've created show a lot of potential, and the few bright flashes of inspiration that Arcanum does demonstrate give some real hope for a strong follow-up effort from Troika Games.
The only time I was satisfied with the game was when I was talking smack to some thug or attempting to haggle my way into a good deal. If you’re a hardcore RPG soldier, you’ll be hard pressed to enjoy this game. Newbies, however, will find Arcanum right up their alley.
Game Revolution (Sep 01, 2001)
Like I said in the beginning, I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Hell, I'm not even the sharpest spoon. I've got lice, I'm not pretty, and I've got a few siblings who kick my ass every chance they get. Having said that, I am new, I'm a lot of game for a little money, and I'm pretty similar to a lot of good old games. If you're looking for a long-term relationship with a complicated, temperamental (I have nervous breakdowns all the time), frustratingly smart game, then baby, I'm your man. Otherwise, I'm just trouble.
There are so many things it tries to accomplish at the same time, so many tastes it tries to cater at, it simply has to fail. This is a prime example of quantity above quality: On the one hand the game gives you lots of options, but on the other hand they do not make that much of a difference. On the one hand the world is huge and it has an incredibly large background story, but on the other hand the characters within are lacklustre at best. On the one hand it sets up that big conflict between tradition and progress, between mysticism and science, on the other hand it does not really make use of it. Strangely enough it still very playable, because for each horrible part of the game, there is a really good one, and the overall impressions is that of an ambitious, but flawed game, that could have been slightly better… but also a lot worse. And at the end of the day the very unique setting, as underused as it might be, still turns this into a highly recommendable experience.
The only people who may get a kick out of Arcanum are those who really like the nuts and bolts of role playing and are interested in a new and different setting to experience. Most, however, will not have the patience for the slow battles, the complicated interface, and the the heavily dated aesthetic of this game.
There is fun to be had here. When it all comes together, when the story drives the action, when the combat is bloody and perilous, when your technologist character learns how to make a devastating elephant gun out of spare parts, ARCANUM is a gas-lit wonder. With its near- constant rate of leveling, the long-term planning, and the payoffs its incredibly deep character-generation system affords, this is a game that understands the pleasures and rewards of a true RPG as few others do. There is more hardcore, satisfying character sculpting in this game than in any other on the market. Unfortunately, there are more good, solid kicks to the shin in it as well.

Just RPG (Dec 02, 2002)
Arcanum strikes me as a game that could have a great sequel. If the designers can figure out a way to achieve real and compelling balance in the game - and tart up the graphics a good deal - they might have a truly great game on their hands. What they currently have is an admirable experiment that fails.

Despite all the negativity, the final verdict of Arcanum is hardly a foregone conclusion. Put most simply, in a genre rife with clones, this was one of the more original PC RPGs in the market. Indeed, the novelty alone proved to be enough of a benefit to see this game through to the end for this reviewer, although your millage may vary. If you find yourself capable of slogging through twenty hours or so of repetitive and/or ridiculously easy battles, perhaps as a veteran of Planescape: Torment, then you can be assured of a experience full of wholly unique flavor, hilarious Old-English dialogue, and quite a few charming Fallout references.
