In my experience I didn't find those two contradicting each other. :)
I've always ended up constructing some abomination, worthy of a Frankenstein movie, that would inevitably collapse upon itself, and by some miraculous happenstance solve the puzzle in the process.

I've played the shareware version (with only the first 6 levels and four materials) and it's great fun. So many ways to complete a level, and so many fun ways to fail it. I'm seriously tempted to buy the full version.
