Freegame.cz (Apr 21, 2002)
Možná už z Freegame znáte ságu Exile. Pokud jste si ji oblíbili,dál už nečtěte a honem si stáhněte Avernum.

Gamer's Pulse (Aug 03, 2000)
If you're used to big, flashy, commercial games with all the latest graphic and audio bells and whistles, it might be easy to overlook Avernum. But don't. Between its sheer size, the non-linear gameplay, and the amount of detail in the game, it makes for a very engrossing experience. Pacing and challenge are likewise excellent, meaning you can really start getting into the meat of the game right way, without spending too much time scraping through those first few levels. Overall, Avernum is just a great RPG, and I found myself impressed over and over.

Glide Underground (Jul 20, 2000)
An excellent role-playing game for all gamers if players can get past the crude graphics and simple sound effects. There is an immense amount of depth, playability, and game to enjoy. The open-ended gameplay will offer lots of variation and the multiple ways to finish the game is a definite plus to all role-players. A simple interface helps gamers get into the game easily while a difficulty slider allows for multiple game settings for all players of all skill levels.

Avernum is worth any true RPG fans' time. Between the massive area to explore, the plentiful quests and good character development, you really can't go wrong. Besides, it's only $25. You can get it only from the Spiderweb website,

If you played and enjoyed any of the Exile games, you'll love Avernum. If you haven't played Exile, but are looking for a solid, challenging RPG, give Avernum a try; you won't be disappointed. The overall rating isn't outstanding, but most of the lost points were in the graphics/sound departments; if this doesn't bother you, the game is excellent.

The fact of the matter is that what once stood as the standard has long since been left in the past, as our expectations have kept up with the technology, and so most would-be players — even genre veterans — are probably going to be turned off by the sub-standard aesthetic. Still, it would be unfair to judge this type of offering on superficialities alone, and when you look past its most obvious failings, this title actually turns out to be a surprisingly fascinating and entertaining jaunt. Its plethora of quests and wide-open playing style offer a fantastic “do as you wish” feel that is rarely seen in modern times, and was truly one of the most appreciable hallmarks of the past. With a well-executed character development system, multiple endings and positively huge landmass to explore, Avernum has a lot to keep experienced fans entertained for a long time to come, though anyone who can’t answer the question, “What’s a Shadowlord?” might want to steer clear.
