Detractors will whinge about a lack of originality and the tweaked graphics looking a little tired, but this is the sort of game that will have traditional role-players waking up in the middle of the night all sweaty with a goofy grin wrapped around their faces. That's if they can tear themselves away from their PCs to go to bed in the first place. If you love traditional RPGs, it's a must-buy, and if you're a newcomer, BG2 could be the one to open up a new world of gaming wonders for you. If you hate RPGs, well, you'll miss out on a classic.

Old PC Gaming (Sep 30, 2016)
This game isn't just good. It' great. There are still a few quirks here and there (such as inventory management), and you could nitpick about minor flaws, but the bottom line is that Baldu's Gate II is just plain fun. Does anything else matter? Not in this case. This game is easily recommendable for nearly everyone. BioWare has obviously been very busy mastering the isometric pseudo-realtime RPG, and it shows in BGII.
But the good far outweighs the bad here. BALDUR’S GATE II creates the same sense of agitation and insomnia that other great games have inflicted on me. Even though I think of this as Game Of The Year or even Hall Of Fame material, I won’t trap myself with the “best RPG ever” phrase. But it certainly ranks up there with greats like FALLOUT, PLANESCAPE: TORMENT, and BETRAYAL AT KRONDOR. Unless some other game manages to top the idea of AD&D demigods rampaging through a Lord Of The Rings-style story, or you’re just not a fan of the Infinity Engine, BALDUR’S GATE II is the best roleplaying game you can buy today.
I have very few criticisms of this game because I’ve been having so much fun. Little, beyond my real life, has jerked me out of my absorption in the story. I wish there were greater depth in the type of NPCs that can become part of your party, but, on the whole, this isn’t so much of a problem as a challenge. What we’ve got in BGII is a culmination of all the work that went into Black Isle previous games. There is the dense, action-packed dungeon crawling of Icewind Dale, the dialogue rich moral development of Torment, and the well-designed interface of BGI. I’ll go ahead and predict it gets RPG of the year (even with titles like Pools of Radiance II and Neverwinter Nights looming on the horizon). To date, I haven’t played anything as immersive and addicting. BGII sets the standard for what RPG ought to be. I hope other production companies take notice.
CyberJoy (Feb 06, 2001)
Przyciągnie twoja uwagę i niemal całkowicie zawładnie życiem. Żeby tylko każdy sequel przewyższał swój pierwowzór...
Yiya (Dec 01, 2000)
Baldur's Gate II gets a perfect 5 GiN Gem score, because it accomplishes its goal of improving on a near-perfect original, and lets us forget about the real world for a while. It's simply the best RPG for the PC on the market today.
Quandary (Jan 12, 2001)
By rights this review should have been finished at the end of last year because I'd already been playing Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn for several weeks. I did consider zapping out a review but I'm glad I didn't because I would never have done the game justice. Maybe I could have finished it quickly but I wouldn't have explored half the nooks and crannies, done half the good deeds or had half the fun. So that's my excuse for this late review which means I'm compelled to begin with a dire warning ... this game could consume you too ... it could change your life. Good news on one level but even if it's bad news and all your friends and family disown you ... there's still a silver lining. This game is value plus for money!
Occasionally a great game will come along that is too good to miss out on. Last year, it was either Quake III: Arena or Unreal Tournament, depending on which series you liked. Some might say that the game you can't miss out on this year is Diablo II. Well, they're wrong. The game you can't miss out on is Baldur's Gate II. Stop reading and go out and buy it ... now. But, of course, if you're a little bit wary of the title, open up a cold one, kick up your feet, and prepare to read.
Gameplanet (Oct 09, 2000)
YOU ARE THE CHILD of Bhaal, the god of murder. In the events chronicled in Baldur's Gate you discovered the truth of your lineage, killing your half-brother Sarevok in the process. His machinations to cause a bloody war which would grant him the power of your father were foiled and you were hailed as a hero. However, your story has only just begun. Driven by frightful visions, you leave the city of Baldur's Gate in search of answers. Shortly after venturing forth from the city with your companions, you are set upon, knocked unconscious and taken prisoner. You awaken in a cell taunted by a powerful mage who tortures you with painful magical experiments in an attempt to harness the raw power of your godly inheritance. Baldur's Gate 2: The Shadows of Amn begins with this series of epic events which sets the scene for the finest RPG to ever grace the PC.
GamePro (US) (Nov 24, 2000)
The folks at BioWare and Black Isle Studios have done it again, serving up another heap of RPG goodness in Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn.

Set in the Dungeons and Dragons Forgotten Realms universe, Baldur's Gate II starts you off in a cell with little memory of where or even who you are. As you make your way out of your prison you catch a glimpse inside the mind of the man who imprisoned you - a demented and depraved mage named Jon Irenicus. It's up to you to track down your captor and put an end to his villainy.
Black Isle and Bioware have done it again, creating another RPG that celebrates all that is great about the genre and breaks new ground at the same time. Astounding graphics, sound, and storytelling combine to make the definitive fantasy RPG epic, one that will enthrall players for years to come.
Gamer's Pulse (Oct 16, 2000)
I can’t do much more than say that this game is by far the best sequel I’ve ever played. If you are looking for fun and adventure I strongly urge you gamers to go out and pick up this game. At the very least pick up Baldur’s Gate and see what you missed and then grab Baldur’s Gate 2. Hopefully you won’t be disappointed. I know I sure wasn’t.
A consummate RPG in every sense of the word. It might not be a tremendous leap from the previous game, but it improves upon its predecessor in all the right places and delivers over 200 hours of true gaming enjoyment. With near-seamless integration of the 2nd Edition AD&D rules, a tight storyline and a good deal of action, I really can't think of an RPG to date that betters it.
Before I close there are few things that need to be mentioned. During fighting scenes when you pause the game, divide up your orders and then unpause, your view is shifted to another part of the map. This is very frustrating as you will be looking at the fight and then all of a sudden looking at a black area of the map. This is a slight glitch and hopefully it will be fixed in an early patch that you can download from the BG II web site – keep an eye out for it. The other part that bugs me a little is the inventory screen is very sticky, the mouse does not move smoothly within it and can cause a bit of frustration as well – this too hopefully will be fixed in a patch. These are the only two complaints that I could find with BG II, I am not disappointed and neither will you be. The Joystick is way up.
Xtreme Pc (Nov, 2000)
One of the best rpg ever on PC. Good: Improved multiplayer. Sound. Story. Some funny comments. Bad: Requires more than 1.5 GB for installation to avoid long loading times. Some bugs.
Gamezilla (Dec 28, 2000)
Not only does this game live up to its extraordinary predecessor, it surpasses it in many ways. The storyline drives on, keeping with the plot of the original, but with enough new twists to keep it engaging. Though they are still using essentially the same engine, the improvements they have made are enough to keep this game tromping remorselessly over its competition. No roleplaying gamer should miss out on this one and many other gamers might be surprised at how addicting this masterfully created world can be.
GameBanshee (Oct 18, 2000)
Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn is an absolute masterpiece. If you are interested in AD&D or role-playing games whatsoever, then this game is a requirement to your collection. Hell, this game is a must-have if you are simply human. I will warn you, however, your expectations of what a good game really is will be redefined. You probably won't see another game quite like Baldur's Gate II until... well, until Neverwinter Nights.
ActionTrip (Oct 23, 2000)
Overall, BGII is an incredible game. It's certainly my favorite runner-up for the title RPG-of the year 2000. It is also sure to become a classic game that will set standards for the games to come. BioWare did it again! They made a revolutionary game and outdid themselves! The question is will anyone else "outdo" them in near future? We can just look forward to seeing more games of such quality.
Games Finder (Jul 30, 2013)
Baldur’s Gate II achieved the impossible by providing a better game than the original and is a must play if you enjoyed the first game.
Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn is an evolution, not a revolution. It's tighter, longer, and more enjoyable than the first game of the series, and comes close to dismounting Planescape: Torment as my favourite computer RPG of all time. PS:T wins simply because I'm a Planescape nut, but Baldur's Gate II is pretty much as good as it gets in the genre. With over a hundred and fifty hours of things to do, interesting characters, and lots of things that'll just make you go, 'Neat!', no fan of the genre should be without BG2 Go buy. Now.
GameZone (Oct 18, 2000)
If you are drawn back again and again, the program has truly succeeded. And that’s the lure of Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn. This program intrigues, and delights. The characters have personalities, the game board is huge and the storyline is liable to go in almost any direction – or so it seems.

И вообще, вы меня увидите не скоро, ибо Baldur's Gate 2 — это однозначный "must have". И никаких "must see"!

No cóż... muszę przyznać, iż Baldur’s Gate 2 wywarło na mnie niemałe wrażenie.
Graphically speaking, Baldur’s II hasn’t changed much. There are new 3D accelerated spell effects and a higher resolution mode that allows you to get a wider view of the action, but the overall look is the same. However, the new plot, wealth of new character options, and gigantic world are truly astounding. After a full day of playing, I came to the realization that I had only scratched the surface of this massive game. Check the lists for new features and enhancements to the game. They practically write their own review.
But as it is time for me to continue on with newer RPG´s like Neverwinter Nights, Morrowind and Icewind Dale II, Baldur´s Gate II is in my opinion the best RPG, and probably the best PC Game I have ever played, and it will always have a place in my heart, no matter the new up-coming games.
It’s getting positively nutty just how much game time developers are squeezing into RPGs these days. Only five years ago we’d be staring in amazement when a title was touted as having over 40 hours of gameplay to it. Now we’re seeing games that have anywhere up to 4 or 5 times that much questing goodness packed, squeezed, and crammed into them. Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn (BG2) is no exception to this, providing a huge, epic quest, with scores of side quests too. Just like its predecessor BG2 has a deep, rich story and a ton of personality. All of the characters and NPCs have very distinct personalities, so that will really stick on you, others that may not be your cup of tea. BG2 provides more questing than you can shake a stick at and is well worth playing. Yet more proof that RPG fans are being spoiled rotten in 2000.

This review could have been very short, but I don't think it would have made my WG bosses very happy if I just posted "one of the best games I've ever played," and left it at that. It is a massive adventure and a wholly immersive experience. One thing I found particularly fascinating and that provided additional comparative information for this review was watching my spouse play the game behind me. His experience, his route through the game was very different from my own, but just as intriguing.
RPGFan (Jan 02, 2001)
There's not much else to say. Baldur's Gate II isn't perfect, of course - it can be unreasonably difficult at times, and the artificial intelligence and path finding flaws inherent in the Infinity Engine are alive and well. Despite these things, Baldur's Gate II is a lot of fun. It's got a great plot, a ton of gameplay for the money, and is, in general, the best game from Black Isle Studios yet. I don't know how else to recommend this game - just go pick it up.
XGP Gaming (Apr 04, 2006)
Though an older game, Baldur’s Gate II still stands out as one of the greatest RPGs on the market today. Despite its age, it holds up graphically, with clean textures and interesting, varied environments. The characters and villains are all up to par with an in-depth and interesting storyline to boot! Baldur’s Gate II is a must have for any RPG fan and will provide hours of entertainment that are definitely worth the small price-tag.
Svenska PC Gamer (Nov, 2000)
Fallout 3, kanske...
IGN (Oct 10, 2000)
Bioware and Black Isle hit us with another great RPG that's already destined to be a classic. We knew it was coming. The success of Baldur's Gate left little doubt that there was to be a sequel. There were whispers and "off the record" comments about it at E3 1999, a great behind closed doors showing at E3 2000, and as it loomed closer and closer over the horizon the last several months, hordes of in-game screen shots saturated popular gaming websites. But, until someone actually played it, the questions still stood--is it any good? Did they do it again? Is Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn better than Baldur's Gate? After weeks of intense play, and countless hours mercilessly stripped from my life, I can triumphantly say, "Yes! It is better"...and there are many reasons why.
Gry OnLine (Dec 18, 2000)
FiringSquad (Oct 02, 2000)
Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn is a masterpiece of game design and development. Like its Black Isle-developed Planescape cousin, BG2 is a tour-de-force in computer roleplaying. Its emphasis may be less on story and character development, but it compensates for that with more action and a broader scope of the story. The setting is also more familiar, with guest appearances by many Forgotten Realms favorites. The successful combination of updated graphics, gameplay and interface serve to show that a sequel should be different from its predecessor but not drastically so. The new character classes and kits were a good addition, and we were glad that BioWare simply made evolutionary steps in development - one official new resolution, a few new gameplay features to deepen combat and player involvement and a more flexible interface.
PC Games (Germany) (Mar 07, 2001)
Mana Pool (Nov 08, 2010)
Baldur’s Gate 2 takes the strengths of the original Baldur’s Gate and improves upon them, making it a very solid RPG and a worthy investment for any fan of RPGs.
HC.Gamer (Oct 25, 2000)
92 (Oct 15, 2000)
All in all, Baldur's Gate II is a vast improvement over the original. More spells, items, variance in game play, and replay value make this one a winner! Interplay and BioWare (along with Black Isle Studios) have, as far as I am concerned, a strangle hold on the RPG market right now, and this one only adds to their place of dominance. A lot of fun, and well worth the money, this game has all the right ingredients for a winning role-playing game!
Gameplay (Benelux) (Sep 28, 2000)
GameSpot (Sep 29, 2000)
It's a definitive role-playing experience, and the only reason it can't be called the best game in its class is because in a sense there's nothing available that compares to it.
GameSpy (Oct 03, 2000)
BG2 comes with an in-depth manual explaining the AD&D 2nd edition rules and spells, as well as an in-game tutorial to teach you how to play. Novices and veterans alike should be able to learn quickly. However, BG2 IS extremely difficult at times, even on the Novice setting. All in all, I'd say this game is epic in scope and delivery and should not be avoided by anyone, novice or veteran. This is most certainly my pick for RPG game of the year.
Pelit (Oct, 2000)
Fantasiaroolipelit lähes yksinään kuolleista nostanut Baldur's Gate kertoi identiteettikriisisen sankarin matkasta halki sisäisen myllerryksen ja sotaan valmistautuvan Sword Coastin. Lopussa maailma pelastui, mutta identiteetin etsiminen jatkuu yhä.
Game Revolution (Oct 01, 2000)
Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn is one of the best RPGs available for the PC. It is stuffed with adventure, gold, guts, and glory like an RPG should be. It is the kind of game you could easily find yourself dusting off two years from now and enjoying just as thoroughly. If this had come out a few years earlier, I could have spared a happy little family of sea monkeys a ghastly fate.
GameStar (Germany) (Oct, 2000)
RPGFan (2000)
All in all, Baldur's Gate 2 is at once a familiar and a totally new experience, providing you with new skills and locations within a familiar style of play. The story is much improved over the last game, and sighting old friends and enemies within the new setting is quite a kick, even if it does sometime provide strange dialogue responses ("I killed you near Baldur's Gate. Maybe this time you'll stay dead."). A number of niggly problems together with the relatively small amount of innovation do drag it down a little, but at the end of the day it's lifted well above all that thanks to the fantastic storyline and the addictiveness of just gaining one more level.
Legendra (Jun 30, 2009)
90 (UK) (Oct 13, 2000)
What we have here is a role-playing game in which little could be improved - the story and quests are captivating, the gameplay tried and tested, and the overall feel is professional and entertaining. The only caution I could give is that it's all going to feel a little overwhelming and complex to a novice. If you're a hardened role player though, you can't go far wrong, even if you grew tired with the original. Nominations for the best RPG of the year may as well close now, and you can probably blame Bioware for many player/partner rows over the next few weeks.
Power Unlimited (Nov, 2000)

Overall, I'd have to say _Shadows of Amn_ is one of the better RPGs I've played in recent years. Maybe it's a bit thin in some areas, but it's still an exemplary game that is well worth the time invested.
Game Over Online (Oct 24, 2000)
All things considered, this isn’t quite as groundbreaking a game as BG1; however, the multitude of improvements, not the least of which is the graphics boost, is most welcome, and makes the game just as much, if not more, fun than BG1 was. I still think Planescape: Torment, while being somewhat more linear, was much deeper and more satisfying in the end, but BG2 will definitely appeal to you if you enjoyed the original - and even if you didn’t, I think it’s still worth a try. It truly is worthy of the Baldur’s Gate name (even though there’s no more city of Baldur’s Gate in it, so the name is just a marketing ploy); and builds on finely on the foundation laid by the previous games in the series.
Gamekult (Oct 10, 2000)
90 (GAF) (Apr 11, 2003)
Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn is an unbelievably good game that will serve as the benchmark of PC RPGs for years to come, or, hopefully, until the forthcoming Neverwinter Nights. It marries superb gameplay to an incredible storyline, with a plentiful amount of customization thrown in. No self-respecting RPG enthusiast should miss it - whether console-oriented or not.

In my opinion, Baldur's Gate II should receive the award for best RPG of 2000. Swords, sorcery, gold, dragons and romance! What more could you want?
PC Joker (Nov, 2000)
Stratos Group (Oct 17, 2000)
Baldur's Gate II is the sequel every game wishes for. It not only builds and improves on the original but surpasses it and takes the series to new heights. The game is long, but never feels stretched and has a plot that is backed up by a stellar mix of aurals, visuals, and gameplay. No RPG player should go without it. In short, Baldur's Gate II is the best RPG of the year thus far. It could easily even be the game of the year
Gamezone (Germany) (Apr 26, 2001)
PC Zone (Aug 13, 2001)
Despite the sameness of the 2D engine, albeit with a few little improvements here and there, Baldur's Gate II: Shadows Of Amn is a great hack 'n' slay adventure that stretches over five CDs, and it should appeal to all fans of the original who are gasping for more - and anyone like me who was disappointed with Icewind Dale.

Now I must complain that although black isle and biowere have obviously put in a lot of hours on this game it has A LOT of bugs... so that is a definite no no from my point of view.
Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn is a diversely beautiful and deadly environment filled with amazing characters and a myriad of possibilities. For any fan of the original, this is a must have -- it's just too good to pass up.
