PC Joker (Feb, 2000)

When it comes down to it, Bang! Gunship Elite is a battle of flash vs. substance. It follows the arcade shooter formula to a tee really and if you look close enough, you can see there's not a great deal under all that eye candy. There's nothing unique about Bang! Gunship Elite, so fans of the genre hoping to find something new in this title will walk away unsatisfied. On the other hand, if what you're after is an action-packed, no-brain shooter than Bang! Gunship Elite's gorgeous, high-speed, intense battles will surely do the trick.

Progress, schmogress, Bang! operates on the same premise (or lack thereof) behind hits like Galaga. Put terrible voice acting, great graphics, huge guns and a license to kill into one title and you've got the gaming equivalent of an Evil Dead film. It may be shallow, but it's entertaining.

Space sim veterans won't find much to challenge their dogfighting skills in Gunship, but the overall difficulty of the missions makes up for it somewhat. If you're up for a relatively mindless space shooter (not simulation), then Gunship should fit the bill nicely.

Sure, the game looks good while you’re tearing through nebulas and asteroid fields with 10 vivid weapons, but beyond that, there’s no there there. You can’t substitute cotton candy for the meat and potatoes of strategy and a good plotline. Try STARLANCER or FREESPACE 2 if you want a game with substance, ‘cause BANG’ doesn’t cut it.
There is fun to be had with the game; at times it plays just as it was designed, a fun space shoot 'em up that lets you put your brain on auto pilot while you gun down everything that moves. The repetitiveness of the gameplay and a few questionable design decisions negatively affects the overall experience, however. Bang! Gunship Elite is another example of a game that sports graphics that make you want to stand up and cheer and gameplay that induces hair loss due to nerve-bending frustration.
Bang! Gunship Elite proves yet again that eye candy alone cannot sustain a title, as the vast majority of its gameplay proves to be extremely tedious. Blasting enemy ships into fragments is entertaining for brief periods of time, but rapidly becomes a chore. Arcade fans looking for some mindless action might find some fun here, but starfighter simulation veterans should steer clear.
