Game industry News (GiN) (Jun 28, 2004)
Mermaid Adventure is significantly shorter than the previous Barbie of Swan Lake and Barbie Rapunzel titles, likely because it is aimed at a slightly younger audience. This detracts from the overall value of this mid-priced game though the quality of the game remains among the highest available for children's titles.
Edutaining Kids (Mar, 2004)
The game's ease of use is both a strength and weakness, depending on the audience. The activities are virtually error-free and not very challenging, which means that four- and five-year-old children can play independently. However, children older than five will likely enjoy the game the first time through, but ultimately find it lacking in challenge and depth. We would have liked to see more interactivity in general. Although some of the activities become slightly more challenging as kids continue to play them, more levels of challenge would have greatly improved the game's depth.
KidZone (Apr 08, 2004)
This is a cute game with great looking visuals that young children will enjoy playing. However, the playtime may be short overall in duration, as there isn't much substance to hold even a preschooler's attention for very long. In essence, there are only four games to play as the maze games in each section are the same, and while some of the games increase slightly in overall difficulty, they don't increase enough to make much of a difference after playing awhile. Having difficulty levels would have helped. Best for three and four year olds.
Tech with Kids (Computing with Kids) (May 07, 2004)
Unlike the recent Barbie Horse Adventures Mystery Ride CD-ROM, which radiated innovative programming, Barbie Mermaid Adventures CD-ROM belongs in the mundane bin of girls’ software.
Common Sense Media (2004)
Barbie Mermaid Adventure CD-ROM is loaded with purple and pink graphics and is sugary sweet, but it isn't very challenging for girls over 6. And while it's fun to see Barbie depicted as a mermaid, the games and activities presented in the software are ho-hum at best.
