As one who appreciates the commitment that Cryo has made to the proliferation of the adventure game genre and a believer that Cryo is making strong efforts and investments to continue to improve the development of their total adventure game package (story, interaction, graphics, music, sound, acting, and puzzle elements are all included), I am putting Atlantis II on my list of the five best adventure games of 1999, along with Faust, which I reviewed earlier. This is a relatively long game in terms of the time that it will take to play, especially if you minimize your use of a walkthrough, but if you enjoy traveling to ancient civilizations and becoming immersed in an engrossing storyline, supported by excellent graphics and integrated, logical puzzles, then you will be both thrilled and challenged by the mysteries of Atlantis II.
I want a good story, interesting characters, innovative puzzles, beautiful scenery, entertaining music and, most of all, a game that runs smoothly on my system. If I can get all of that plus several weeks of gameplay, I am thrilled. Congratulations, Cryo Interactive! You have outdone yourselves with Atlantis II.

Do you remember when Myst came out? I remember thinking that finally some of the wonderful graphics that are in the hottest movies are going to be in our PC games now and we won't have to have a mega computer to play them. Now great graphics in games are expected and Beyond Atlantis delivers.
Beyond Atlantis is based on a successful adventure game formula. Give the player a tidbit of a story, airlift him into breathtaking locales he'd never see hanging around his local mini-market, and give him some devious puzzles to solve. It's a first-person game, with beautifully animated cutscenes and very stylishly rendered locales to wander around in.
Beyond Atlantis reflects the experience and polish of a veteran group of adventure game designers. Unlike Myst and Riven, you really become part of each of the mini-quests contained within; and unlike depressing offerings such as Piranha Interactive's Morpheus and Cryo's own Faust, you are indirectly brought to a higher level of positive consciousness through the gameplay. It is clear that Beyond Atlantis has some bothersome limitations, but nonetheless the uplifting majestic magnificence of the audio, graphics, and story make it a real winner. I have heard a rumor that Atlantis III is in the making, making me tremble with eager anticipation. In the meantime, all of you out there with adventure in your blood ought to give Beyond Atlantis a shot.

Let me start out by saying that I played this game at my parent’s house. What does this have to do with Atlantis II? While playing my father wandered into the computer room to see what was up. Within minutes he was seated and started playing the game with me. In short he really enjoyed the game.
Power Unlimited (Feb, 2000)
These failings are a pity, because the good stuff in Atlantis II is so very good that, if the whole game had operated on such a high level, Cryo would have had a masterpiece on its hands. As it stands, however, Atlantis II is merely fabulous, gorgeous, imaginative, and not to be missed. Maybe we'll get a masterpiece tomorrow, but Atlantis II is plenty to celebrate today.

Writing about Beyond Atlantis is incredibly hard (it's taken me a couple weeks to psyche up for this). Why, you ask? Well, everything about the game contradicts itself. It's an oxymoron. It's one of the best games I've played, and one of the worst.
Meristation (Jan 23, 2000)
Eurogamer.net (UK) (Apr 01, 2000)
Atlantis 2 is certainly not the best adventure game out there (try Cryo's Faust instead if you haven't already), but it is still a stylish and well presented game which can be entertaining despite its flaws. Worth a look for hardcore adventure gamers in need of something new, but if you're new to the genre you could find better.
Quandary (Jan, 2000)
Atlantis II has some slightly surreal aspects, but overall it is a most enjoyable adventure game. I thought the individual stories in Ireland, China and the Mayan world were interesting, varied and quite evocative though the overall premise lacked the cohesive storyline of the first game. To that extent the links to Atlantis: The Lost Tales are only tenuous so it isn't necessary to have played that game before embarking on Ten's adventure. I'm pleased that Cryo have shown that they are prepared to listen and act upon suggestions for improving gameplay and in that respect they have certainly implemented many improvements here and ultimately produced a fine game. Now, if only I could get them to reply to my numerous requests for review copies of their games. Once again we have to thank a kind Quandary reader for loaning us this game to review.
Svenska PC Gamer (Mar, 2000)
IGN (Jul 25, 2000)
Cryo's undeniably gifted when it comes to booking vacations for the adventurous crowd. The French publisher's unforgettable outings have taken imaginative gamers to the mythical land of the Aztecs, immersed them in the intrigues of imperial China, and drenched danger-seekers in the fascinating culture of the sunken city of Atlantis. Invariably, due to it's unique content, of all the places you may have visited courtesy of our foreign friends the big A-town's gotta be the toughest act to follow. Still, for better or worse, the boys from the land of wine, cheese, and excess perfume couldn't resist the prospect of a sequel. Ladies and gents, meet Beyond Atlantis.
Gamer's Pulse (Oct 03, 2000)
As a multimedia project, Beyond Atlantis is quite impressive; as a game, it's basically a failure because it's really just not very fun. Ironically, the "game" aspects of the game, such as the puzzles, are what end up detracting from what it does well. Rather than being the most intriguing aspect of the game, the puzzles felt like a chore I had to get out of the way before I could get on with enjoying just walking around and looking at things. If they took out the puzzles and made a few adjustments, Cryo could make a truly great piece of historical interactive learning software. As it stands, they've made a truly mediocre game.
Gdyby twórcy darowali sobie te "mistyczne" wyprawy w kosmos i trochę dziecinne bajdurzenie o Dobru walczącym ze Złem (Szafarz Światła kontra Ciemność)...
PC Gaming World (Dec, 1999)
I prefer my adventures packed with a huge number of challenges, masses of textual and graphical detail, and a cast of quirky characters. I don't particularly enjoy it when your progress is slowed down by technology, however flashy - and to some extent, this is true of Atlantis II. You might feel differently, though. If you're looking for an audio-visual feast spiced up with some tough challenges, then this is exactly that.
GameStar (Germany) (Jan, 2000)
GameSpot (Jul 18, 2000)
Those who love adventure-game puzzles for puzzles' sake will like Beyond Atlantis, as there are many puzzles in it and they come in all varieties. But what separates great adventure games like Grim Fandango, The Longest Journey, and Myst from more standard games like Beyond Atlantis is that the better games use the puzzles and locations to bolster likeable characters and an interesting story. Even the best adventure games will occasionally ask you to find a salmon - the difference is that you'll understand why, and you'll want to.
PC Games (Germany) (Mar 07, 2001)
games xtreme (Mar 03, 2000)
Junk! Absolute waste of time! Please don't go out and buy it. If the constant re-drawing of the screen doesn't turn you away eventually the story line will. If you are looking for a good first person perspective adventure game look somewhere else coz you ain't gonna find anything good here.
