The A.V. Club (Oct 10, 2011)
The Binding Of Isaac is pitch-black and hard as hell. If you die in the middle of crawling the game’s randomly generated, Zelda-styled dungeons, you start the game from the beginning, armed only with the knowledge of the mistakes that led to your demise. Luck plays a factor: Stumbling upon the right magic weapons and power-ups can give a leg up. But persistence is the key. The necessity for masochistic patience in the face of terrible odds might be familiar to those who played Super Meat Boy, the brutal platformer Edmund McMillen co-created with Tommy Refenes. But here, the difficulty dovetails uncomfortably with a plot steeped in biblical lore, mommy issues, and scatology. Isaac, naked and unarmed, defends himself by spraying his aggressors with his own salty tears. It’s impossible to play The Binding Of Isaac without coming away with the feeling that McMillen could really use a hug. Don’t let that stop you…
Game Sphere (Jan 29, 2012)
Destructoid (Oct 02, 2011)
All told, The Binding of Isaac is a deceptively deep game. That it only costs $4.99 is nothing short of astounding. I don't see myself putting it down until I hit that magical 100% completion mark, which is hours and hours away at this point. This is one trip that I recommend to everyone open-minded enough to give it a chance.

He may have just been a peyote induced fantasy, but God was still completely right. Video games are awesome and so is The Binding of Isaac.

Game Critics (Mar 10, 2012)
Get it; it's phenomenal and a bargain. I wish I could say that it's available on your console, yet it's not. Just a guess, but maybe its absence has something to do with the game's inclusion of sauntering vaginas that attack you with jet streams of blood? Vaginas aside, what we really have here is a masterful game about the terrors of childhood that is not long, but wide. One may play for an hour or two, but they're constantly tempted to go back in and uncover the scads of remaining secrets. It's a style of game that really intrigues me, and one I want to see more of.

Binding is not the game I would have expected Edmund McMillen to create in the wake of Super Meat Boy. That was a painstaking, pixel-perfect work - some seriously Old Testament, Miyamoto-esque stuff. In other words, he was a total control freak. With Binding, McMillen and Himsl created the rules of the world and then set it in motion. Yet this game is nearly as much fun as Super Meat Boy, and more profound. It proves that there's more than one way to make a masterpiece.
DarkZero (Oct 04, 2011)
The Binding of Isaac is a game I would recommend to anyone old enough to hold serious opinions on family planning. It is available on Steam for less than the price of a cinema ticket and it deserves your attention.
Vandal Online (Oct 02, 2011)
GameSpy (Sep 30, 2011)
Sprinkled with humor and nods to gaming's past, The Binding of Isaac is a ballsy game that revels in its absurd moments. Shock value aside, you'll want to play this indie gem over and over again. It's imaginative, utterly absorbing, and the best five dollars I've spent all year.
Cheat Happens (Oct 23, 2011)
I smashed my keyboard, I cursed the game is frustration - at one point I even swore that I would never play it again, but I always ended up going back to The Binding of Isaac. Sure, it's challenging, but it's also one of the most rewarding and well done games in recent memory. At only $5, you can't afford not to check this one out.
MMGN (Oct 03, 2011)
The Binding of Isaac has the same signature elements as Team Meat's indie hit, but provides a very different experience that is addictive, fun and just a little disturbing. The ability to play in short amounts of time, and to have a continually surprising experience thanks to the randomly generated dungeons will keep users playing for quite some time. If you want a challenging look at how games used to be, then you simply cannot beat The Binding of Isaac.
Splitkick (Oct 06, 2011)
For five dollars, you absolutely cannot go wrong with The Binding of Isaac. With its sometimes brutal difficulty, randomly generated content and heavily addictive nature, the game is guaranteed to provide you with hours upon hours of entertainment for very little cost to you (other than your time). It is perfect for a play whether you just have a few minutes available or a full night for gaming. I will warn however, that if you are easily offended or have a weak stomach, the game may not be right for you as the humour can be incredibly crude most of the time. It is available for both PC and Mac right now on steam for the low price of $4.99, or $5.99 if your purchase it along with the soundtrack. The game has sold exceptionally well so far in just a single week, and Edmund has promised a ‘very dark and jam packed update’ for October the 31st, which gives even better reason to pick the game up and experience its dark secrets.
Gameplay (Benelux) (Oct 28, 2011)

3D Juegos (Oct 03, 2011)

GamingTrend (Oct 03, 2011)
I’ll put it simply: If you can roll with the macabre toilet humor and if religion jokes don’t put you off, AND if you enjoy games with non-optional permadeath, randomized content, tons of secrets and considerable replay value… it’s hard to go wrong with The Binding of Isaac. Especially at five dollars. Let’s be honest: Those conditions place the game into a pretty small niche. Maybe not as small as, say… whatever niche is occupied by those people who love hyper-realistic bus driving simulations, but it’s still a niche. The only real glaring fault is the previously mentioned lack of an ability to save and quit the game so you can continue it later, a mark on an otherwise unique, and in my opinion, fun little game.
Indie Game Magazine (Sep 29, 2011)
At the end of the day, The Binding of Isaac is one of the only roguelike titles that I’ve fully enjoyed in the past few years. The game contains a heavy amount of replay value when it comes to unlocking all of the characters or trying to discover all the hidden rooms or unique items. If you’re a fan of Edmund McMillen’s previous work or you’re just into the plain bizarre, I truly recommend that you check out the game. However if you are not a fan of roguelike titles then proceed with caution.

PC Gamer (Dec 17, 2011)
A punishingly tough light RPG that’ll draw you in and spit you out without a second thought. Worth it for the presentation.
Games Finder (Sep 03, 2014)
If you want something with a Zelda feel, the quirky adventure of The Binding of Isaac might be your saving grace.
Inside Gaming (Oct 04, 2011)
I don’t know if I’ve played a game as disturbing as The Binding of Isaac. Zelda-inspired dungeons and Robotron-like shooting combine with frightening graphics to make The Binding of Isaac a truly unique gameplay experience. Cumbersome controls hamper what would otherwise be a resoundingly memorable adventure. At just five dollars The Binding of Isaac is a great indie title that offers up a ton of replay value and gruesome fun.
Meristation (Oct 01, 2011)
GameSpot (Nov 21, 2011)
Through smart design and simple mechanics, The Binding of Isaac manages to feel approachable despite its difficulty. Superfluous elements have been stripped out, and what remains is a tightly focused game that continues to feel fresh even after multiple completions. While it does lack some of the extra bells and whistles of other modern games, The Binding of Isaac remains an enjoyable (and demented) adventure.
Game Informer Magazine (Oct 03, 2011)
The Binding of Isaac is an exceptionally weird game with a list of caveats longer than I’d like, but when McMillen’s vision shines through, it’s as compulsory of an indie title as Castle Crashers or Everyday Shooter. Even if you get bitten by a save or achievement bug, I have a hard time believing you’ll regret dropping five bucks here.
Edge (Oct 07, 2011)
Funny and miserable, disgusting and endearing, the end result is a game that’s smart enough to have things both ways, offering an often brutal critique of certain religious sacraments, while wallowing comfortably inside the rituals of one of gaming’s oldest genres. The presentation is uncommonly vivid, the implementation is as precise as you could hope for, and, if we’re being totally honest, wading through blood and feces has rarely been this appealing.
80 (Oct 18, 2011)
GamesRadar (Oct 05, 2011)
A few nagging issues, combined with inexplicable slowdown and some other minor technical hassles, slightly hamstring what is otherwise an enormously entertaining experience. For those not daunted by challenge, in the market for a game that’s quick to jump into and a great deal of fun, The Binding of Isaac is a fantastic way to spend five bucks.
GameZone (Oct 02, 2011)
The Binding of Isaac won't appeal to everyone. The game is fiendish in its difficulty, and with no checkpoints whatsoever, gamers who have grown accustomed to the many modern elements of gaming will likely be put off. Those who have a distinct adulation for old school dungeon crawlers and roguelikes, enjoy a good challenge, and want something refreshingly difficult should not miss out on The Binding of Isaac. Even if you're looking for something to kill some time in small bursts with, you really can't go wrong with this download. The game offers a quick gameplay experience, but with unlockable levels, extra bosses, oodles of items, and multiple endings, there's a deep experience hidden within this deceptive little package. At just $5, you couldn't ask for a better deal.
GameZebo (Oct 21, 2011)
After plugging many, many hours into this game, I can honestly say that I see The Binding of Isaac becoming my new Minesweeper for wasting time. Playthroughs are short but very sweet, and can be fitted into pretty much any lunch break and the like. It's the amount of customization on offer here that really gives it that "just one more go" feel.
Factornews (Oct 05, 2011)
The cartoony and cutesy way the characters are portrayed add enough juxtaposition that hopefully they encourage players not to take the game seriously and create a sense of irony instead of dread. If one can put aside the controversial themes, what you have here is a very well done roguish/Zelda themed indie game for $5 on Steam.
Spazio Games (Nov 04, 2011)
IGN (Oct 11, 2011)
It occurred to me upon finishing The Binding of Isaac that crude as it is, it reminds me of avant-garde art or haute cuisine; interesting and bold but made for a small group of devoted connoisseurs. Those of a certain palate are sure to love its humor, weirdness and replayability but the broader gaming audience is likely to find it more of an acquired taste.
Da Gameboyz (Oct 01, 2011)
Overall, if you don't mind playing a game with some distinctly eerie and dire themes, that will remind you of the good old days while repelling you, give it a go. If you have a severely weak stomach for this sort of thing, or are easily offended, however, stay away. It's a good game, with a surprising amount of content for the price, but it will definitely turn away those who don't like even cartoon gore, and leave a slightly bitter taste in even the most hardened gamer's mouth... and mind. But, despite being grim as all hell, it's a good game, and recommended by this reviewer.

70 (Oct 06, 2011)
