Cheat Happens (Jul 27, 2010)
With Zombie Studio’s Blacklight: Tango Down, the game’s annoyances and missteps are greatly outweighed by what it does right. It’s a competent and fun multiplayer experience with an absurdly cheap price tag that’s sure to be its best selling point. It won’t replace your current FPS obsession, but it could be a decent diversion.

Blacklight is a strange beast to review. On one hand, it seems like the best thing to do is spread the word about an entertaining old-school shooter with a neat twist to weapon design. Not enough people are playing it! They’re missing out! On the other hand, though, I realize that Games for Windows Live and a lack of server browsing makes the front-end a bit of a disappointment. Maybe they should wait until that’s fixed. Depending on your patience, Blacklight could be the best fifteen bucks you’ve ever spent on a game, or a frustrating waste of cash.

Blacklight: Tango Down ist für mich eines der Spiele, das man zwischendurch mal spielen kann (beziehungsweise könnte, wären da nicht die teils elenden Wartezeiten). Ohne großen Ehrgeiz ans eigene oder das Können anderer, denn dafür ist die Balance nun wirklich viel zu mau. Was mich an dem Titel allerdings wirklich beeindruckt: Er liefert sieben Spielmodi, zwölf Multiplayer- und vier Singleplayer-Karten sowie einen Haufen freischaltbaren Kram für 15 Euro. Soviel verlangen Infinity Ward und Activision für ein lausiges Map-Pack.

In the end, Blacklight: Tango Down is a good game with some lofty goals. For sheer amount of content it gets gold stars, and ideas like the Digi Grenade, which explodes into a brilliant array of blinding pixels, are admirable ones. Unfortunately, the game also likes to reward shady practices like spawn camping, and the health bar is pretty much useless.

For multiplayer shooting on a budget, you could do a lot worse than Blacklight: Tango Down. You get more than your $15 worth here, and the gameplay offers a change of pace for those who are getting a little burned out on the multiplayer in full-price games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Some fixes and tweaks would be welcome, however, particularly when it comes to map spawn points, the disappointing solo/co-op mode, and some PC-centric issues like the lack of dedicated servers and text chat, but you're still getting a lot of game for a reasonable price.

Blacklight: Tango Down is a solid, if not particularly inspired, first-person shooter. You've played futuristic shooters before, right? What really sells it is the price tag. For $15 bucks you get seven adversarial modes, 12 maps, and four cooperative Black Ops missions. The game also looks nice with a slick sci-fi aesthetic, and the constant reward system will keep you grinding to your next rank. If you fancy shooting people in your games, Blacklight: Tango Down will likely be a fun diversion from whatever AAA shooter you normally play.

The level design doesn’t help the plague of spawn camping, though, as maps are cramped, movement is predictable, and starting invincibility is limited. Forget about playing the cooperative black ops mode: it’s a simple shooting gallery with uninteresting objectives. Better are the team-based online modes, borrowed from other games but still relevant here. Blacklight: Tango Down features a lot of weapon upgrades to earn over time, but all of the options are restricted from the new player. Thankfully, recruits are still fairly competitive with the initial load out. There are some undesirable artifacts from a console port, like the idiotically limited matchmaking and widescreen display restriction. Still, the slick presentation and action-packed gameplay are a nice mix for the price, so fans of online shooters will find some pleasure contained herein.

Die Koop-Missionen sind nichts weiter als ein Alibi und hätten gleich ganz fehlen können, so uninspiriert kommen sie daher. Anspruchslose Schalterrätsel und immergleiche Gegnerwellen tragen sicher nicht zum positiven Bild von Blacklight bei. Viel besser steht es um die MehrspielerModi aber auch nicht. Nur weil sie anders heißen, erwartet Sie trotzdem nichts Neues. Gut, Blacklight hat sicher nicht den Anspruch, das Genre neu zu definieren, und richtet sich eher an preisbewusste Ab-und-zu-Zocker. Hierfür passt der Shooter perfekt. Wenn nur die vermurkste Partien-Suche nicht wäre. So kommt nämlich einfach kein Spiel zustande.

Trop occupé à plancher sur une stratégie de communication pour appâter les PCistes, les développeurs de Blacklight: Tango Down ont tout simplement oublié de travailler sur leur jeu. Des déplacements mous, une jouabilité archaïque, des graphismes très moches et un multi-joueurs mort-né (grâce à Games for Windows Live), ce soft digne d'une version pré-alpha a beau être affiché à moins de 15 euros, il ne vaut pas la peine que l'on s'attarde dessus. On aurait aimé avoir devant nous un FPS qui en a dans le pantalon, mais on se retrouve indéniablement en terrain eunuque. Evidemment (GFWL oblige), l'absence de serveurs dédiés et d'un channel pour communiquer avec les autres joueurs sont incompréhensibles. Mais à ce niveau, on ne va pas demander la lune. Vous l'aurez compris, Blacklight: Tango Down est entièrement dispensable, à moins bien sûr de l'offrir à un ami à qui vous voulez du mal.
